The most enjoyable part of the job is when the school is clean and everyone in the school is safe and germ free. A typical day at my job is when I organize my day to get to the most important of my day. For example, if I'm dealing with blood or feces. I could prioritize my safety measures so that when I commence the clean up, I would not have any hiccups when completing my task. The best the thing about my job is the team work with staff, kids, and management. They are the true heart of my job. They always give me the heads up and the support I need to over come any absticals that my be a hindrance to my job. For instance, if I'm prest for time that I could not finish a task, the management and staff of the school board are very understanding. And always give me the opportunity to decide which is task is important and which one is not. Time management for me is very important and I feel I have that freedom to finish my job successfully. The Surrey Schools Staff ranges from all genders and ethnicities. There clearly open to all and welcoming all walks of life everyday. From the new immigrants from Iraq and Siri, from the native kids here in B.C.. No matter where they are, Surrey Schools is growing for the new generations of tomorrow. They are continuing to strive to be better and improve/adjust the quantity of learning today. And finally, the hardest part of job. To be honest I don't think I have one, and if I do have the staff and management is always there lend a helping hand.


By culture I am referring to the culture of teachers. Teachers are very strange people, they hide in their rooms, they have breakdowns over minuscule changes to their routine, they advocate for bullying yet are the biggest gossipers. I came into this profession with high hopes of making a difference, I always told myself this is for the children don't mind what anyone else is doing. I mind my own business, I do not burn bridges or speak about people in a negative way. That would go against our code of ethics... which majority seem to "forget". Man as a new teacher (this is my 3rd year) I seriously wan't to change professions. This is not how teachers should be, it is horrible! If your not a sheep with their mindset and you refuse to engage in gossip, they act like your against them. How about people just want to do their job and not act like an angsty teen. I have done both high school and elementary, I am telling you that you need some thick skin to work in this profession, I am half these peoples age and they are legit crazy. Also if you look young be prepared for some old grumps to belittle you in front of people to assert their dominance... pfft! It is not just me I have 4 other friends from my graduation class and they all deal with these issues on the daily. Stop gossiping, mind your own business, learn how to speak to people, and stop treating new teachers like incompetent garbage!!! I don't get paid enough for this.

A typical day at work consists of assisting the teacher in the class room. We are there first to assist the teacher as well as the student we have been assigned to work with. I am there to support my student throughout the day ,creating a positive learning environment. I work on social appropriate behaviours inside and outside of the classroom setting. I have learned that we have to be prepared for anything as many of the children we work with have behaviours that we can't always be prepared for. That being said we are trained to handle many situations that come our way. Hardest part of the job would be when you hit a block with your child. When you have tried many different approaches and nothing seems to click. You tend to take it personal and wonder what you are doing wrong. The most enjoyable part would be when it does finally click. You are so proud of your student and all the work and effort they put in to over come that task.

No such thing as a typical day of work. I learned to always be prepared and stay on your toes. Management is very disconnected and they are more worried about protocol then treating their employees with class. Co-workers were mostly wonderful and had the same gripes about the district management. The hardest part of the job is the emotional toll of working in certain rooms. The most enjoyable part is knowing you made a students day.

I was hoping to support schools and students. Instead, I was directed to spend thousands of dollars on tech equipment upgrades and new office furniture for the senior team. Their home internet and other petty expenses like carwashes are reimbursed, but support staff can't make a living wage and schools are suffering. The new executive team, including the Superintendent and Assistant Secretary-Treasurer, are not in line with the vision of "Leadership in Learning". This was a great place to work up until about 3 years ago and now it's steadily going downhill. The executive team is failing the district.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The Surrey school district is poorly managed  and there is no room to grow professionally. Stay away !!!
But if you want just a  level entry job, to eventually go for a different position for the different company , go ahead and apply for SD 36 :)

Everything , underpaid and overstressed

To politically correct , what actually results in  poorly thought children - our future!!!

Stressed to the max , running like chicken with cut of head

Very professional staff. Support from a great union.Have met alot of very nice people and is a great working environment. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
If you are a permanent worker not alot of stress but to get to that point you will be on spareboard and will have alot of travel to different schools

Good environment. Alot of different cultures so very interesting 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Pretty relaxed as you work on your own

Worked in a classroom, varying from kindergarten to grade 12. Typical learning classroom with an assigned special needs student. Helped teacher with certain tasks as well as typical children in class. Learned how to work as a team with teachers and other support workers. School environment was always cheerful and positive. Most difficult part of job was helping special needs students excel. They would have good days and bad days. I find children to be fun and honest, which made each day very enjoyable.

Support staff not treated well. Put into all kinds of ridiculous situations. Appalling attitude from Administration. 
Principals and Vice Principals look at Support staff as though we are stupid because we don't have a Masters Degree. The higher up the ladder the staff are the more arrogant and self righteous. Many wonderful people work directly with students and they are taken advantage of by Integration Support Staff and Admin. Missing breaks is encouraged. Union Shop Stewards at our level are not effective. 

Better than production entry level jobs with a lot of supervisors.
You can finish at you’re on pace.
Cleaning supplies not limited compare to city.
All equipment are available to make you’re work easier.
Only downfall is No training for Head Custodian in secondary schools to deal with co-workers. Some head custodian feel they are manager to take advantage of you to clean their section. Some feel they are the owner of the school that they put locks in supplies.  That is why in secondary there is always fights among co-worker.
