Sums is quite the place. They don't have a lot figured out being that they rapidly were expanding admits the pandemic. The people are kind and the staff is all great, the clients are what make the job the best part. I loved the kindness and grace shown by the Sums however...

They will hire anyone with no previous experience in mental health or addictions, or awareness of homelessness. It is easy to get the job no degree required and you make decent for no experience. It is great to enter the field. However, they hire very young people who can be gossipers and make the workplace toxic. There is a ridiculous amount of nepotism in this organization and they will play favourites over people. They claim  they are not but it clear as day, also they have little cliques. 

Also, they will run out of things like first aid supplies and you will have always shortage of something in some shelters. This is a harm reduction shelter and they will run out of those supplies aswell. 

Also, you will see the absolute disregard for human dignity, where they will kick out clients who refuse medical treatment such as surgery. They will coerce their clients into doing things with no regard to personal autonomy and treat adult clients like children. 

Don't bother recommending changes or suggesting them they running low on some locations staff are lazy and will not do it. Some staff is more concerned to be on their phones or playing games then actually doing work. Sometimes the work load falls on to one person. 

You will not advance as I mentioned earlier nepotism is running rampant in this organization. Also, most staff will disregard protocol and even training, on the account the training is so vague. 

They do not adhere to Fraser Health guidelines either.

The young staff will not handle conflict properly as they lack training and experience. There is immense distrust of some staff and clients. 

It is hard job with little support from the management despite them claiming they care. Gossip is rampant among staff, even bullying.  However, some staff are the most amazing people you will meet with compassion and empathy. 

Oh and even PPE will run out like gloves. 

I would recommend this to get anyone for part-time or needing to get their foot in the door. This place will drain you and it is hard job to see people overdosing, medical emergencies, and immature staff which will get to you in time eventually. I would suggest working for established non-for-profits with clear guidelines, integrity, and experienced staff. 

A typical day at work is coming in and reading the communication book, log in your hours, etc. go into what position you're in either at the front door, floater or in the kitchen. Cooking, serving and cleaning for the whole 50 residents in there. You try to clean, situate, get laundry done, and get donations for whoever needs. Make sure that all residents are happy and are where they are supposed to be. Other than that the evening shift is only for about 5 to 6 hours and then we get to go home. But if there was something extra like a fight, someone causing damage or overdosing we have to call police/ambulance services and that's always extra time in your day hoping that you can save someone's life.

I just want to say , there is no 30 day probation , time period were if you do good you get a raise! If you go from custodian to floor to head floor personal there is no or very little pay increase. Custodian  and emergency response medic get Same pay!, People who work 6 months get Same pay as hired personal. I'm sure this is in the works but ???. Dont get me wrong other than that there great, and flexible depending on your supervisior.

The place Is very un organized if you don't tow the company line no phone lol as for leadership zero credibly here or lack of skills or they lack the skill set to get the job done as for outreach workers they are just as stupid as the leaders or the so called shelter supervisor lack skill.

I enjoy working with community support them and having a safe place for them to come in to sleep and have healthy dinners sums was like a second home for me as everyone was there to help everyone with open arms 

I loved working for Sums, they are loyal to there employees, accommodating and are passionate about the way they serve and care for there community and employees. They give you opportunity to grow and change positions within the company.

The owners of the establishment genuinely care about their homeless patrons coming in for some food and shelter. the establishment doubles as a church, which gives many of those who come in something to believe in and hope for the future.

It’s a really positive workplace environment. Managers and coworkers are really nice. If you have a passion for community work and helping individuals facing challenges, this is a good place to start your career 

I enjoyed working at surrey urban mission..it felt like home away from home..very supportive staff an co-workers. It was nice to be helping in my community.i enjoyed getting to know the people of my community.

I volunteered at the soup kitchen in high school. My time was spent delivering meals to tables and cleaning up afterwards. Serving meals to the less fortunate really made me feel gratitude towards life.
