TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

TIFF struggles (like a lot of other arts orgs) with creating a healthy workplace culture but tends to get away with it because the staff generally really do love the mission, so the highs are very high and the lows are very low. Not the place to be if you want a stable decades-long career or a good work-life balance -- some of that is more the general state of arts orgs in Canada over the past several years, but TIFF seems to be uniquely vulnerable to their blind spots due to their (comparative) size and people's willingness to overlook problems in order to be where the action is.
Senior management seems to be going in a very McKinsey/corpspeak direction over the past few years and it's causing frustration among the staff, but the staff themselves are generally great at their work and there's comparatively little interpersonal drama -- if only because nobody really has spare time to start any.

Hiring process for the festival is very well-organized. Training for the role could have been a bit more thorough but they still went over all the essentials. Before and during the festival, managers were very helpful when I had questions or needed help. Entire team is very supportive of each other, so even when things get very busy you can still handle everything because nobody is putting unfair pressure on you. As long as you are professional and do your best and work together, things go well. Work is delegated well among team members to help remain organized.
Film festivals are generally short periods of intense work, but the hours were fair.

Do not apply here! Support from upper management is non-existent, they do not care about their employees, pay is bad, and no room to move up. For the most part the people who work front-facing positions are great, passionate people, but management does not care about these people. These are the people who love film but the staff who work in management have no passion for film, incredibly deflating and uninspiring. And the salary is terrible, TIFF is notorious for not paying people enough which is why they have such high turnover. And between November 2019 and June 2020 they have laid off 50 full time employees.

The cause and the international clout of the Festival are the best part of working here and look great on a CV but the culture is incredible toxic. Management is impossible - no accountability and uninformed decisions make getting your job done difficult, frustrating and chip away at self-confidence. There's a reason they are always posting positions and unless you've been there for 10+ years and have carved out a space for yourself to work autonomously, working here is rough and mentally stressful.

I worked just for a few days, because it's was a volunteer and the Festival only takes 10 days. During the Festival and during my shift, i learn a alot of things about movie industry, and cinema. As a movie lover, i really enjoyed working for TIFF, i didn't really feel my shift hard. With my co-workers, we helped costumer to go assist their movie, check the guest list, helped each other to gives a best image of the compagny be spontaneous and welcoming. I really loved this experience.

loved working for the organization - a lot of hours, most weekends nearing festival time - very accommodating to my part time summer schedule as I lived abroad for most of the time i worked there - once you proved to be an employee of substance, an extremely loyal employer


Excellent job culture! So many passionate and fun people work here. They make the job great. Event planning has its downsides (long hours, weekend/evening work, and don't even get me started on Festival in September) but for those with the experience and drive for event production it is a great place to be!

I worked two festivals as a phone rep and it was exhausting. You only get two days off during the festival and the training is not the most helpful. They do not help you with rude or berating patrons and do not have a system inplace if a patron yells/curses at you. I would not suggest working for the festival if you cannot handle really tough patrons.
The perks of the job are working with a lot of great people who share your love of film and free movie passes.

Working during the film festival can be hectic but it's fun. As a ticketing agent, you sell tickets to the general public or industry delegates. Sometimes the ticketing system can be temperamental but once you get the hang of it, you'll be fine. The managers are very nice, patient and helpful. Going to galas and premiers are fun! Sometimes you get to see celebrities too. Of course you get free tickets see great films, most of the time before the wide release.

I sold tickets, memberships and redeemed packages through debit, credit or online transactions. Used Arctics software to navigate members' accounts in assisting them in finding their tickets online. The stressful days consisted of high volumes of customers ordering  multiple tickets at once  which sometimes caused the software to crash. Perks of the job were great as I was able to watch free movies on my day off.
