This was an exciting position as not only was I leading a team of leaders on the production of a "new age" living quarters camp for Suncor energy, I was involved in all aspects of the project from beginning to end. Upon hire, I became involved in doing material take offs, recruiting as we progressed through the stages of development, creating progression reports and meeting with stakeholders, tracking production times and reporting them in morning meetings, implementing daily stretching program and conducting morale interviews with employees to ensure our leaders were developing and mentoring staff to working with the construction manager in aligning the functions for success in the manufacture of the units.
I learned about all that it takes to prepare for a multi million dollar project, the alignment of activites required before anything could be started, who all the stakeholders were and how each step affected the previous/next step on the planning stages.
Managers were not familiar with camps production and were very open to trying concepts that were brought to the table from those of us with relevant experience in the manufacture of camps.
My co-workers were excellent teachers, mentors and achievers. Not only do we learn from those who lead us, but we learn so much from those we lead. Very rewarding experience for me.
The hardest part of the job was not being able to be on the plant floor as often as I was used to as my job required alot of administrative duties daily. I came from a background of being on the floor 90% of the day and ensuring that all employee needs were being met to maxinize productivity in a safe, quality minded manner daily.
The most enjoyable part of the job was working with all levels of management, design, human resources, sub contractors and employees as well as seeing the customer expectations being met and exceeded as we progressed.

Overall Tapon is a good place to work. Lots of skilled Journeyman electrician to help you advance and learn in your career. Some of the work may get repetitive but they are a large enough company which allows you to move around freely from job to job. Majority of work is out of town but is relatively good paying. Typical day includes starting work early (depending on location could be as early as 530 AM - 7 AM.) most places are long hours at a minimum 10 hours a day. This includes two 15 minute breaks and in most cases 30 minutes for lunch. (Again all depending on location of work) I found most management to be fairly reasonable when accommodating requests from employees and most had a willingness to listen. Overall Tarpon Energy Services is a great place to work and would especially recommend it to someone just starting out in the electrical career. The one thing that really stands out to me from working here is the commitment to safety Tarpon demonstrates they are an industry leader in this category and it makes you feel good knowing that they will do anything in their power to make sure you go home safe at the end of each day. I believe change is a good and important part of any business and if you are not changing (whether it be in your career or in business) you are not advancing yourself or your business.

The company has numerous simultaneous projects which require a lot of quality and analytical decisions to be made. 

I have learned how to manage and motivate the staff in order to meet the necessary deadlines and how important consistent communication with clients is.

For management, it is important to utilize everyone's strengths and improve on their weaknesses. Eliminating non-value added steps in the process is a fundamental step in success. 

The co-workers are hardworking individuals. The team is great and everyone is working on a common goal. 

The hardest part of the job, is to consistently re-structure the project plan with ever changing deadlines.

The most enjoyable part of the job is to see the consistency and the quality of the work being produced with all the standardizations and trainings I implemented.

I have been with Tarpon (now PTW) for a large portion of my career and for the most part have enjoyed the experience. I definitely owe the company a lot of what I have learned. The company is quite large for an E/I contractor and with that comes the ability to learn in many different environments provided you're willing to travel. I would say for a contracting company it is quite stable and management in most areas has always treated me fairly. Pay has been on the lower end of fair market and I since their organization has merged it feels a bit disorganized and there isn't much opportunity to advance it feels.

All in all I would say they are a great company to learn from and the work is stable but if career advancement is big for you it may be best to look elsewhere.



Worked for tarpon about 10 months was being strung along with the promise of actually getting welding experience and hours for my apprenticeship they gave me 450 hours i was given from my first three months when signing up and 300 i was credited for previous experience for the next 7 months i got 40 hours out of 1000 and was told i should be happy with the raise they gave me and not complain about my hours. i was never taught anything i had to ask journeymen on their breaks about the problems with my welds and general welding advise. other than what i taught myself on my lunches and during my overtime unpaid.
I am very passionate about welding and moved from ontario to alberta to get the best welding education canada can offer.

No planning ahead of time and everything had to be done yesterday
They have high expectations from you and you don't get any appreciation.
Every once in a while someone needs to remind the manager that this is not a classroom and you are not the teacher! really poor management culture...
In the engineering department I haven't seen anyone satisfied, everyone sticks around just because economy is down and there are not many opportunities out there.

However, I had good co-workers and friendly team members in our department (except the manager) and other departments.

The worst aspect of the job for an educated engineer is that you don't learn much ENGINEERING, you will learn however how things are assembled in a real shop and how things are run down in the chain...

I had the opportunity to start on this project from the beginning,which gave me the chance to be involved right from Demo  to Start up.This allowed me to increase my skill level in areas such as Tray building and Equipment Fabrication as well as being involved in the Planning and Layout stages for a better undrstanding of the overall Project.This job brought skilled Electricians and other Trades from all across the country,it was a good opportunity to work with others with varied skill levels and experience to make me a better rounded individual.I was fortunate to have a good group of people around me,staff and management kept the mood light and productive and all were supportive which makes a big difference when working long shifts so far from home

Working for this oilfield company was mostly a good experience. Lots of work available, with proper pay and benefits. This company seems to be one of the few that treats employees well. Long hours and overtime definitely helps to advance in the trade. Some downsides included: lacking the time to take business on the home front (long hours of work), sometimes getting filthy, and working in the the cold. Having said that, I would like to one day work for this company again, except in the winter.

I enjoyed my time at Tarpon as it was a challenging place to work. The drafting department at Tarpon has been going through many changes in the last couple of years and it is really coming together.

The drafting department consists of a mix of junior and intermediate draters that work extremely well together to get the job done. I found the drafting manager well focused on the needs of a project to get it done right and efficiently. A very good people person.

This is a drafting group that has and maintains Drafting Standards that make the overall job that much easier to do.
