My experience with Teck was working at Fording River in the maintenance department.  I can't speak for the other mine sites.  

I've seen a lot of advertisements for employment from Teck pretty much everywhere and they are sending the wrong message. The work life balance for the 4x4 shift is not realistic for a family. 

The work atmosphere is very dirty.  Coal dust everywhere.  Everybody literally walks around with their lunch kits wrapped in empty garbage bags to keep their lunch clean.  They have showers in the change room for after every shift and you will need them. You are 40 minutes from the closest town and you're not allowed to have your cellphone at work period. It is supposed to stay in your locker. 

The 2 days, 24hr off followed by 2 nights schedule is terrible (4x4).  You never really catch up on your sleep until maybe your first day back to work.  The 24hrs off in the middle is a pure waste of time. Not to mention how they can switch your shift on you, leaving you scrambling for childcare. The majority realize that this shift is not ideal, especially for any family. 

There's a real lack of experience in general.  Not a lot of people to look up to or mentor new workers or apprentices.  Morale is pretty negative for the most part.  I had an older worker tell me something when I started and it still holds true:

Law of percentages: 
30% don't have the abilities to do their job correctly
40% of the people have the ability and choose not to do their fair share, the remaining
30% of the people do all the work

Teck is the perfect example of this.

For trades people there's no room to learn another trade and become dual ticketed.  They literally have 1 person for a/c, 1 person for fire suppression...etc.  You can't transfer between mine sites to develop.  The only way to learn something new is to move up into management. 

Management has no direction.  They suffer also from the law of percentages (above) with the added factor that people have uneven power dynamics, unlike the union members.  There is an irony in advancement that seems to favour locals.  People with no ability or lack of motivation find themselves in management roles that require both.  A result of this there is no real/meaningful change. They don't work collectively as a group with a common goal. It seems they are actively working against each other for the next promotion.  

The pay was competitive 5 years ago, but Teck has fallen behind in terms of hourly wage.  Fording river has a union which limits the companies ability to make wage adjustments between union contracts.  A new 5 year union deal was just signed last summer.  The cumulative of the first three years will barely cover just this years inflation. 

The work environment at Teck really felt in general unhealthy. 

There's better opportunities for trades people right now, I would recommend seeking employment elsewhere. 


Teck is alright place to work but not that fulfilling or exciting place to work. Bigger jobs are often sourced to contractors for liabilty purposes which leaves you mostly with pm or small jobs which are quite boring. Alright for an older fellow winding down his career. Not good for a young apprentice or someone starting their career as lack of knowledge or growth will hinder them.  It is unfortunately very clique baised being by small towns so don't expect a lot of support even with a union unless you're already on the in. Get to watch an apprentice less seniority than me get more pull on what jobs he gets and holidays despite me having a ticket and being there longer in seniority because he grew up knowing most of management and people there.
Some employees are very lazy and are not held close to any accountably which is unfortunate as those who perform and work hard are often ridden harder to make up for the lazy employees lack of work ethic. This often breaks them and they often quit or lose all work ethic as if you display any you seem to be more under the gun with management expectations. Need a little more discipline and accountability as it is ridiculous protecting some of these lazy individuals who actually cost more to keep than just getting rid of them.

Growth in this is place is again good boy club biased. Not much to move up anywhere or have any sorts of pull no matter how long you work there. Unless you grew up with management, you are not moving anywhere.

Pay is alright but not very competitive for hd mechanics. Can make more in nearby calgary or cranbrook without even going to the oil sands.  See what happens next contract but they will need to be more competitive in order to attract and retain employees. Unless you live in the area, not much incentive to move/ commute too the valley to work here when other companies offer more pay with the same benefits.

Time off and flexibility is more of the reason I stay. I work a 8 days on 8 days off shift and with holidays and being able too bank time off with ot. It allows me A-lot of flexibility compared to a solid 2 weeks on 2 weeks off I was working previously. 

Not a bad gig for a older fellow who lives in the area. But not a  place for personal growth or developing as a young trade person.

Typically, I would be helping out in a heavy duty mechanic shop at Fording River Coal Mine. I did general duties around the shop (i.e. restocking rags and shavings to soak up oils, general cleaning of bays in shops, painting safety lines), and I was often given tasks by my foreman, such as organizing a hidden away storage section.

I learned a lot about safety awareness at the mine. Safety was a key factor when being considered for employment as dangerous activity puts everyone at risk. I learned the importance of safety, and I strive to incorporate it into my everyday life.

I enjoyed my management team. They were all friendly and approachable. I was always greeted and asked as to how I was doing. When given tasks, they always ensured that I would be able to safely perform my tasks or they would task me to assist someone in doing the task assigned.

My coworkers were just as great! They all took turns teaching me about the tasks they do to keep heavy duty vehicles up and running, and they let me assist when I could. They would also show me new things that I could do around the shop when all my other general tasks have been finished.

The hardest part of the job was the hours. I worked from 7am-7pm, and it took an hour to get to work and back. 12 hour shifts aren't bad, but the physical labor that comes with the 12 hours was a bit tough. However, even though this was the hardest part of the job, it was not hard at all, especially with the amount of fun I had working here. 

The most enjoyable part of the job was that I met a lot of great individuals who welcomed me into their work environment and taught me how to do things. The tasks I was given weren't difficult, and I love the memories of working there.

While working as an engineering in one of Teck's Coal plants I was exposed to a wide variety of challenges.  These ranged from troubleshooting, project management, equipment and system design, and supervision.  This exposure while being very well rounded, was also quite stressful for a student fresh out of school.  There was next to no support for the work, no senior mentorship that could offer any advice or check work, or no training to provide the proper knowledge of the systems.  Most learning is done by independent research on your own time or on breaks.

Personal performance isn't very important to management.  Your progression, salary and bonus all depend on how long you've been there, not how god of a worker you are.  There also isn't many opportunity to move around within the company because there isn't any kind of formal program for new employee development.

An average day can range from absolute monotony to frantic emergency troubleshooting, but usually monotony.  It's often a struggle to stay in the loop of what is happening because of the volume of meetings each day and the extremely pour communication across the company.

The best part of working here is the salary and the opportunity to live in Fernie, BC.

It's not until one is away from work,(on holidays at the present time), that you realize many of the typical things at work you actually miss. I enjoy being productive and safe along with the comradery. Typically, I mostly operated truck which seemed to be my niche as it is what equipment I enjoy the most. I aslo take pride in my ability to  always keep the truck running safely and in the process keep myself and everyone around me safe. Since I have been working in the mining field now for 17 years, I have seen fellow workers graduate to the management level. As a result, from experience, I have seen both what they often go through. Management is happy if you do your work safely and properly, and stemming from that knowledge, I have never had problems with management in the past. Even though I enjoy time by myself in activities outside of work, I love to have fun with others and I hope that would include everyone from ordinary workers to the highest management. Easily the hardest part of the job to me is transitioning from a day shift to the night shift in 24 hours with our two day, two night shift setup. Easily the most enjoyable part of the job is making new friends and the social aspect of enjoying many different types of people.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Good people, work atmosphere was friendly once you have been there for a while. Good pay! 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Face paced  and conditions  are extreme at times. Could get snow in June. Traffic patterns ever changing.  No places to rent in the valley or it's hot bed or they want you out so others can fill the spot while your gone on days off. Shift work nights are bad as even with all the lights on the truck it's pitch dark on on money run down the mountain. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's overall very good but I believe Teck knows the problem with accommodation.  This is why they have such a high turnover. Plus it's actually in their benefit as they get a few months work out of a person and don't need to pay medical  or whatever. I have nothing bad to say about the people or the work. If you can deal with the above issues 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Long ,dirty, stress at times, bad weather, hard to stay focused on task when you are worried about  finding a place to stay out of the 26 in training only 4 stayed and after 3 months only one left on the mountain. It's tough!

Teck claims to be the leader in the mining industry, on the top of the game, yet Teck cannot even offer LOA for its workers, something the UNION should have negotiated for in the conract but obviously DO NOT CARE.

Expecting a worker to come from out of town, as many do, and then be responsible to find their own accomodations in or near town is amateur at best for a company that does so well in the industry. 

Why isnt TECK purchasing an apartment complex for out of town employees, and then rent rooms to them for their shifts?

Why isnt TECK providing camp accomodations for their employees?

No, you are left twisting in the wind to find your own overpriced place to stay and work one of the WORST shifts in the history of shift work....2 day DAYS, 2 days NIGHTS....then 4 days off, and if you are out of town, count one day to travel from TECK, and one day to travel BACK to work....so really, 2 DAYS OFF......

Good luck getting your body to operare properly and maintain health on that rotation.

Do a better job TECK and the UNION that is SUPPOSED to protect us employees, you claim to be the leaders in the industry, prove it and take proper care of the men and women that allow you to run your business and who make you your money.

-develop data gathering file folders in Outlook for participants.
-meet with management, auditors, contractors to prepare data for External and Internal Audit team.
-attend weekly meetings with senior managment with updates on Audit readiness.
-gather MS PowerPoint data and prepare presenations for senior management.
-setup user access controls for new hires on behalf of HR.
-run daily/weekly/monthly reports on user access to systems,data and physical building/office access.
-Learned about formal IS Governance policies, Audit Control, Data Security, presentations, Mining industry.
-very knowledgeable management about the industry and how IT/IS works to support it.
-highly trained and subject matter experts in IS/IT and the mining industry.
-hardest part of the job was being Audit Ready in very tight timelines.
-most enjoyable part was learning about a new industry.

•	Lead budget process for mine site and work with other departments to ensure we meet the mine site and corporate requirements (Annual Spending around $300M)
