The Manor Village Life Centers

The manor village was supposed to be a great place to work, and it was in the beginning. 

As things progressed in my few years being there the manor I was working at became a not so healthy work environment. It became mentally and physically draining, and employers did not seem to care about employees well-being in the work place.  

The residents are the only thing keeping most employees there. They are the only positive thing some days. 

There’s always drama between different departments, when it is supposed to be a professional work environment as we are there for the residents not the other staff members. 

Constant hiring and wage freeze from a company that brings in a lot more money than they’d like to admit. 
Little to no support from Higher management, if you have concerns or complaints, you’re better off working for a different company. 

if you bring up any disagreements about policies and management they’ll likely discourage you.  

Priority is given too favourite employees. Staff is not treated equally in any department. 
 
Management from other departments looks and speaks down on other staff creating a very hostile and uncomfortable work environment. 

Confidentiality code is almost never followed. 

You are in for quite the surprise if you come into this place thinking you’ll only be doing the job you were hired for, most staff is almost always expected to go outside of their job description, and over work more than what they’re wage is paying them to do. You are hired for one department, but will be expected to work for three.















What is the best part of working at the company?
The staff are caring and dedicated people. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The Executive Director is a nano manager, who gets involved in everyone's business. Always asking us to do extra things that are not part of our duties. Constantly looking over our shoulders and getting involved where they are not needed. Irritating and frustrating person who is untrustworthy and has their best interest always first. Creates a poor morale and is disingenuine.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Extremely low morale. Upper management are quitting or getting let go and they are not being replaced to save money and their job duties and responsibilities are passed down to the workers. No job security and not any incentive to stay for low pay and more duties being added with no reward. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy and frustrating whenever the Executive Director sees you. You will be asked to do some extra work which is always a priority which takes you away from your real job and makes you fall behind. Frustrating and annoying to work for them.  Staff tend to avoid them as much as possible.

Typical day: walk in, clock in, sit, get yelled at, serve coffee or tea, get yelled at again, clean the area, keep an eye on the doors, help family members/guests or residents, get yelled at once more, do required daily tasks, get yelled at before closing, clock out, leave.

What i learned: that no one truly appreciate receptionists and they get **** for everything.

Management: no one is truly qualified to be a manager. If you're pretty and you're willing to kiss bum, you'll fit right in.

Workplace culture: toxic. You're expected to know everything without being told everything. All departments want is to mooch off but ain't willing to help.

Hardest part of the job: keeping your sanity and mental health in check.

Most enjoyable part of the job: nothing.

My position's duties are very similar to any other executive director's position at a senior retirement home.  What makes Manor Village different is that we are a local company.  Our CEO is in Calgary, our Head Office is in Calgary.  There are no American values influenced on the management style.  I have worked at other companies where this is the case and it's not a great environment.

I feel that I have great support from the Head Office team and if I need advise I can reach out to the other Manor Village communities for support.  In the past year, changes in management have given each community more ability to shape their own community - within guidelines.  It has made my job so much more rewarding.

This is a company that does care for seniors.  It not a slogan, they really do.  The CEO brings in creative programming that can only make senior lives more social and fulfilling.  It's a private company and there is a bottom line, but, the seniors always come first.

I would NEVER recommend anyone to work there. No job security at all. They take advantage of nice employees. You cannot trust  any managers and they always give promotions to their favorite employees. This company does not value education because favoritism plays big role. ( who gets the job/promotion)If any employee  shares concerns with the management gets terminated within a week. I am not even giving a one star to this company. upper management all about the money and how they can put more dollars in their pockets, instead of paying fair compensation to hard working employees. Above and beyond program is a joke ( Favorite employees gets it and incentive decided by the person who has no knowledge about the program. If you are CEO's favorite then you get prompted to VP of …… So many VPs in this company, but no one sincerely care about the company or has the education to be VP.

They make promises and tell you all sorts of things to get you in the door, and when you start your first day they say we'll make those things happen so soon and then they never happen. Then you're given a horrible boss who makes your daily life miserable.  No words of encouragement, no job direction, nothing enjoyable about this place.  Every single employee looks out for themselves.  Too many people with "power" when it all means nothing.  At least the residents are well looked after.  Just not their staff.  Even their supposed HR admin person is stand off ish.  Someone you're supposed to be able to go to for advice and help, and they look down on you and snap at your questions.  Not worth the time or headache or the constant unknown of job security.   The slackers are kept because they are quiet and don't question things.

The care is excellent for all the clients of this beautiful care home

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Everything is handled with excellent quality and delicacy so that the client feels satisfied when staying in this nursing home.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The main thing is to pay special attention to the client and take them on a daily tour of our home with gratitude and love to give them the assurance of having satisfaction from this nursing home.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working in this house every day is a day of happiness and love for each of our clients, delivering our loyalty day after day

It was a very enjoyable place to work at, you got to know the residents and my co workers were like family. I gained lots of valuable experience in customer service and dealing with difficult personalities and situations. Some of the residents had health problems such as memory loss or would get random mood swings due to dementia and I’ve learned how to deal with those difficult situations and keep the resident happy the best way I could. It was also a very fast paced environment, the residents don’t like to wait so you had to do everything very quickly so I’ve gotten used to working in a fast paced, stressful at times environmental as well.

I have been employed for 2 years now and, after a rocky start, find this place a wonderful environment to work in.  The Support team is here to support you; the staff survey is done to "get that finger on the pulse" and action is taking.

Performance review and wage reviews are done regularly, and wages are on average at par or above par for our industry. Your hard work is being recognized in extra benefits amounts and in public congratulations.

The owner asks us regularly what we are looking for in wages, benefits and work environment and he will direct the support team to make it happen. We have received higher wages and better benefits because of him.

This company takes very good care of its employees with many thoughtful benefits and compensation.  They truly care about work/life balance and helping the Residents is so rewarding.  I look forward to going to work (not something I can genuinely say about past employment).  There is a very relaxing atmosphere here and a true team environment.  The hardest part would be that at times there are many distractions and people demanding your attention but its manageable and not something that impacts the position negatively.
If you have a genuine heart for helping people, then this is an amazing opportunity.
