CON: Whether or not you will enjoy your time there really depends on who's your supervisor.  There are some really self indulgent leadership members of the team who expect you to simply agree without thinking and admirably gawk at how hard they work.  Working smartly, delegating, and building up others is really frowned upon, again, depending on the leadership you report to.  You are definitely just a cog to the executive team, so don't expect them to care about you as an individual.

PRO: It's an extremely busy work environment and there's lots of potential to learn about a lot of jobs at once when working in collaboration with other teams.  The frontline staff are really good-hearted people.

Excellent benefits and they are working to improve their salaries.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Helping the vulnerable  population and helping the refugees to integrate into society.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part was the managers and supervisors  who does not value or appreciate their workers.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It is not as Christ centered as they claim it to be. lots of Hierocracy.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Typical day is good- loved the people I  work with,

I worked in the emergency shelter as a cook, typical day includes - training/supervising volunteers, preparing for breakfast, lunch & dinner service, receiving & sorting food donations, preparing bagged lunches & snacks. Hardest part of the job is thinking on your feet, must be able to deal with any situation that arises I.E. running out of food during service, finding space for food donations, client & volunteer concerns or emergency/safety.  The most enjoyable part is serving those in need, connecting and making friends.  

I worked for The Seed in various positions and I did not have a sence of security ever.  The ED is excellent and a few from the management team were great.  My role was important but there was no regard for the position, by my supervisor.  I was actually hired to fill the position so that it would not be vacant.

The mustard Seed was a great place to grow and become a helping hand with the city of Calgary. I enjoyed all the challenges and the environment. Though it wasn't always easy but working as a team made things move smoothly.

Safe environment, security but, low salary at the time at was working there I have a family and I'm the only working so when I was offered a little more I switched jobs I regret that now. because the Mustard seed proved to be more stable place to work.

At the Mustard Seed you have the opportunity to meet and chat with incredible guests who will teach you about life, hope, addictions, mental health issues, overcoming struggles, finding inner strength, sharing joys and much more.

We are super close as a team where I work and the community is challenging sometimes to work with but filled with heart.

Be aware that management of the higher ups will not always make sense

A poisonous work environment. Decades of mismanagement.  Frontline employees are considered worthless, costly, and unnecessary for the support of homeless persons.

It’s a tough job but extremely rewarding. They truly care for staff and the benefits are great. Just know that is it a high stress environment and things can change quickly. Glad I got to work here.
