I found the work/life balance at Thurber was incredibly positive. The company has several events scheduled throughout the year, from beach volleyball games in the summer, to an annual ski trip. I felt like the focus on family above all else was definitely present, and the company made me feel valued and like they cared about me. 

While at Thurber, I was able to move from a paper-based accounting system (which was wonderful, as a student just out of school), to an in-house system (BST) which I helped implement. This experience is something I find invaluable, as new graduate from Langara College. In addition to that, I was able to move into a role with little supervision, which I found I thrived in. Problem solving and hard work were definitely expected, and I found myself learning new things frequently. 

I only left this company because they were restructuring my department, and I was laid off. I have nothing negative at all to say about them. It was truly a wonderful place to work.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with the best people in the lab. Specially those who doesn’t politicize and work tremendously with respect to others

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The people who are in charge of dispatch. They are not honest, they make untruth stories or dramas in short.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment in the lab is always happy, don’t just show it to the dispatch lady or else she will make a scene or make her own to be recognized too.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Most days are busy. It’s peaceful too when you avoid the dispatch area

this corporation sounds great when you join in the beginning. however, do not expect tasks to be given to you from the get go. in addition, even when you do tasks, you either get inconsistent feedback or no feedback at all in the end to be ignored by project engineers. many of experienced senior personnel and even intermediate personnel seem busy enough to not care about assisting trainees. might as well better for this corporation to hire exclusively experienced professionals to save their time.

They've grown a lot over the past few years but management is struggling to scale along with the growth. It's mostly about money and not about the people.

Good Benefits, decent pay. No employee recognition. No employee bonuses for coming up with ideas to help the company. Turnover is growing whether they believe it or not. Management allows a crisis mode before reacting to help their employees. 

I enjoyed the work and the environment, however the nature of the materials testing industry is volatile. This is not Thurber's fault, however; it is simply the industry. This makes it difficult to know one's schedule more than a day or two in advanced. The hardest part of the job was the long hours during the busy season in late summer/early fall. The most enjoyable part of the job was the tight-knit office environment.

Worked there for 2.5 years as an EIT, good support from manager and senior coworkers, but as an EIT be prepared to be doing a lot of field work out of town for an extended period of time and hours/workload can differ a lot depending on what project you’re working on. Overtime is also compensated (straight time pay for EIT positions)

Out of 8 places, this is by far the best place I have worked full-time. The types of work, clients, coworkers, team-building events, bosses, pay, and level of responsibility were all better than any I experienced before. Some outfits had better benefits, or more interesting work assignment locations. None of them were better overall than Thurber.

Dispatcher for field work will call you on vacation and if you ignore your work phone he will call your personal numbers till you answer.  They talk about a work life balance but it does not apply to field staff.  If you have an appointment of any sort you are being inconvenient to the office.  No chance at being able to move up.  There are a couple of good engineers there that were amazing to work with and I will miss working with them

Thurber Engineering is a great company to work for. They value their employees very highly and make sure they are well compensated with good pay as well as benefits. Thurber is a very well managed company with flexible and motivating superiors. The upper management has done a great job in hiring and training their employees to become good representatives of the company on site to both contractors and clients.

Everyday is a new day. Days are always different regarding on workload and projects. I learned how to analyse soil and cement. Management were always on point. Co-workers are hard-working and respectful. The hardest part of the job is the occasional long hours. The most enjoyable part of the job is the ability to go at your own pace so long that the project deadline is met.
