Tommy Guns Original Barbershop

I worked at Tommy Gun's Barbershop for a period, and unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired. While I appreciate the opportunity to work in a barbershop environment, there were several aspects that need improvement.

Management:
The management at Tommy Gun's seemed disorganized and lacked effective communication. It often felt like there was a lack of clear direction, making it challenging to perform at my best. It's also very clear they love to take advantage of their employees, paying them substandard wages for the kind of standards and pressure the Fischers put on their workers. They truly treat the staff like "the help".

Work Environment:
The work environment is be stressful due to a high turnover of staff, and low quality replacements. This affected team dynamics and created a sense of instability. The lack of a cohesive team made it challenging to provide consistent and quality service to clients. The girls also seemed catty and cliquey.

Training and Support:
While I expected comprehensive training, what I received was lacking. Additional support and guidance for new employees would greatly enhance the overall experience.

Clientele Experience:
There were instances where client satisfaction was compromised due to factors beyond our control, such as scheduling issues and limited resources. This affected the overall satisfaction of both employees and clients.

I believe with some improvements in management, training, and team dynamics, Tommy Gun's Barbershop could create a more positive work environment for its employees.

Your typical day at work as a Guest Service Associate includes doing your opening and closing tasks, keeping the barbers stocked up on dry and wet towels, greeting and checking clients onto the waitlist, answering calls, managing barbers’ breaks, doing the laundry, stocking the shelves, and so on. 

The management at my specific location was horrible. There was/is absolutely no WHMIS in place, no polices (harassment, etc), and no one in the shop was first aid trained. There was a lack of concern about your wellbeing if it was considered an inconvenience to the manager. If you were experiencing a medical emergency at work, the manager did not care about you and only cared about how it affects them and demands you find coverage even while experience extreme pains that requires you to be at the ER. 

The culture within the workplace was great! All of my coworkers were pleasant and so fun to work with. The diversity within the workplace was great.

The hardest part of the job would be managing your tasks while the store was busy. It can be stressful during those times, but if you have a good understanding of how to do things, are able to multitask, and have a system that works for you, you’ll do just fine!

The most enjoyable part of the job was getting to talk to my coworkers and customers. Everyone that came into the workplace was so pleasant and fun to speak to. It made the time go by fast and didn’t make me dread coming in. 

I've worked for Tommy Gun's on and off for the last 10 years, working at a few different locations; 3 in total (3 different cities). Over the years I've had the chance to meet a ton of great barbers, managers, owners and educators. I've had the privilege to attend education and company summits paid for by my employers. Tommy Gun's is a super fast paced environment but it's also a lot of fun. A typical day as a barber consists of cutting mostly men's hair, shaving (which isn't hard to learn when you get the hang of it), beards and the odd coloring service. There are some women who come in but usually they have short hair or are aware that we cater to barbering clients mostly. Cleaning duties are required of all the staff, folding towels etc (normal salon day to day duties). Over the years working with Tommy Gun's my pay was consistent and I think I was always paid fairly for the job I did. I always had enough money to live in whatever city I was in as a single woman and comfortably. Tips are a huge bonus and depending on how busy your location is you can make ALOT. I've been fortunate to learn so much from not only my coworkers but all of the continued education they offer here as well. No business is perfect therefore I can't give 100% but if you want to work somewhere that keeps you busy, has a sense of community and family atmosphere, teaches you a TON and provides you a reliable income then look no further.  

Working is fine, but management is atrocious. Im a barber who's been cutting for a while now and im starting to think management will hire almost anyone even if their skills are sub par. Some people leave the store with full on lines on thier head. It was the first red flag for me since i take peide in my skill. Second red flag, the owner of the location i was working at was barely even there. He pops in once in a blue moon and complains that the store isnt making enough and that "you need to do more and sell more products". The last straw was when before hiring me they new what my hours were like prior to working there and we agreed on it. When i couldn't make certain days that they were aware of, they continued to say "sounds like a you problem"(so why hire me in the first place). Even after they changed my hours in which i forcefully agreed upon because, if i didnt i knew my job would be on the line. Two weeks in i had to start making excuses to leave or just not come in to work. No professional in their right mind would ever want to work here. Great people though ! The co-workers were nice and welcoming people, but sadly it doesnt quite fit the "barber shop" persona. Also, most of my co-workers had complaints towards the owner as well. It seemed like they just accepted the "the way it is" and just stayed quite about it all. Thank god i got out when i did..

A typical day of front end involves working by yourself, but first being asked to come in early every single shift, because the manager doesn’t want to work. The computer system is not great at all and there needs to be a new system, so makes things difficult for one person, especially since the barbers were banned from doing front end duties. The computer system was inaccurate for wait times, causing lots of people to complain. The duties we have are managerial, but not paid managerial, with this, as front end we were not appreciated enough at all, no incentives, no tips. However, I managed to gain keyholder skills which has helped me secure other positions, and be respectable/responsible. Some of my coworkers were the best parts of my day, but there was so much turnover, that you could barely make relationships with anyone. It was good at the beginning, but as time went on, true colours were bright and unpleasant, management was a major issue, boundaries were broken, blaming every issue on us, texting us at awful hours of the day, etc etc. I don’t recommend working here, unless u are a young kid who can get pressured easily, and don’t push back. 

This is never a company that I would recommend. While having guaranteed clientele is a positive, that's where it stops. 

Tommy Guns Original Barbershop doesn't care about their employees. Wether you're sick or have a family emergency that pulls you away from work, all they care about is profits. 

Blackout holiday dates during times that people want to be with family just so they can pull in more money. 

When a client purposely and without cause, treats a barber badly and complains, instead of looking into the "issue" the company sides with the customer and doesn't stand behind their barbers 


The "culture" changes from shop to shop, but if you like feeling like you're still in high school, compete with gossiping and people abusing the little power they're given, this is the company for you. 


 Your availability doesn't matter, they ask for it, but they don't care. For example: if you tell them you CAN'T work nights....you get put on NIGHTS the EXACT SHIFT YOU TOLD THEM YOU COULDNT DO. 

Tommy Gun's Original Barbershop is a complete INSULT to the Barbering industry, the faster this company goes bankrupt, the better. 

I was excited in the beginning until I met the Manager. She is inexperienced, immature, and pretends she cares. No training just throw you out to the wolves. Watch videos and learn that way. Seasoned barbers don’t have time to help nor do they care about you.
The pay is good and tips and a few staff members make an effort.
But if you try to be social the Manager will bring you in a meeting and nit pick you for everything! Very micromanaged and power tripping. Forget if you’re sick have to call around to other staff members to cover your shift. Usually have a full staff every shift so no reason for that to happen. So many products to learn about good luck in selling most guys are happy with Gillette shaving products $15 don’t need to spend $30-$40 on speciality products.
Disappointed with the experience and I wouldn’t recommend this job unless you took the barber hair program and you are not social and keep to yourself.
In my opinion too hard on staff always walking on eggshells and worried.
Shouldn’t be like that needs to be fun and relaxed!!

I've worked at 3 separate Tommy Guns locations, for 3 separate owners/managers, and they all understaff their locations, pay at best just above minimum wage, and will work you to absolute death if you let them.

If you're lucky to get a good group of coworkers,  it can be a fun environment, but there can also be a lot of pettiness and drama if you have a manager that plays favorites.

The working hours kind of suck, and good luck getting weekends or holidays off. Some locations will even block off MONTHS of time that you are not allowed to request days off or vacations  during. One of the locations I worked at blocked off the last half of November and the entire month of December "so we can be fully staffed during  the holiday rush". I understand wanting to make sure you can accommodate your clients, but you should also be sympathetic to your employees needing a break during that time too.

All in all, it's not a terrible place to work if you get the perfect combination of a good location, good coworkers,  and a good manager, but expect to be worked like a rented mule, and to be underpaid for the privilege. 

I want to start this off by saying most of the girls I worked with were amazing. Some of them liked to cause drama but lots of them are easy to get along with. 
But let’s get right to the point and talk about the management. All they care about are themselves and people they favourite. 
If they don’t like you, well good luck. 
They will make your work like miserable and take away hours and basically make you quit so they don’t have to fire you without cause. 
You have a family? Well good luck with working there and ever needing a day off or someone to cover your shift if your child is in the emergency or needing medical help. It’s YOUR responsibility to find someone to cover it or you are out of luck. I had to go into work twice while my kid was in emergency because I couldn’t find anyone + didn’t want to lose my job. I ended up quitting because of how bad this job impeded my mental health and my managers knew this. You think they cared? Absolutely not, all they wanted was their keys back and I never heard from them since.

Management is utmost awful and catty. They hire there friends and play favoritism towards them. They give most beneficial services to the barbers they like so they can make commission. And then you get in trouble for not making comission..every hot shave which is worth more went to her favorites and her herself.I was in the midst of getting a covid test done and they tried to get me to come in. I was then off for covid and got a text from my boss I was demoted. And then when I got back to work they cut my hours and gave em to someone who has been there less time then me. Barbers show up sick with cough medicine on the back counter and not one of them are made to go home or do a test. I think that says everything right there. I would never work for this company again. Management is brutal, and don't like being stood up too.i should of known when I first started it didn't feel right. But I tried and tried and tried. Some of the other barbers and clients were pretty awesome.
