Worked here for 2 years. This was probably the roughest 2 years of my life.

I don't think any of the reviews above 4 stars are real. I never got fired from the place, I quit because I found a better profession.

First off, the only redeeming quality of Toyota would be If you struggle in a corporate environment or have other issues and completely arent capable of learning a skill (not a knock on anyone) then Toyota will give you a job you can do for 21 an hr and give you roughly a dollar raise every year for 10 years, if the place is still around. That being said, that's the only redeeming quality about the place.

This place will destroy your life. The constant shift changing will make sure you never sleep properly. So when you arent sleeping properly year after year your brain will deteriorate. A lot of people will do drugs and drink to help cope with this. Toyota will even give you a drug card right off the bat, but no benefits.

Now shift changes from nights to days are found in other jobs as well, but what makes Toyota even worse is the rediculous pace you have to work at. When I started I had been an athlete all my life. I was very fit. I can tell you the savage pace we worked at even shocked me. This is why  a person in average shape will always get injured. This is also why having a shift change on a job you literally sprint at for 9 hours is brutal. Your adrenaline combined with no sleep destroys you. Even when you are tired you can't sleep. In my 2 years there, 3 people at Tmmc died - in my opinion all were work related. I remember one was a car crash coming home from work which I would certainly attribute to being exhausted. One time I was so tired I actually couldn't stand and fell to the floor. I hadn't slept in 4 days. You go home and you sit in bed wide awake yet exhausted, because last week on night shift you would be running around and breakneck speed at 3 am.

So naturally, with this environment comes an extremely negative bunch of people. Even the TLs love it when someone gets roasted or bullied. Because everyone hates their lives. Everyone cheats on their spouses because half the time they are working beside a woman/man every day and they never actually see their real spouse. Add in severe depression and that's that.

To this day I am so thankful I left, I get nightmares when I see the clock at 2 am and remembered I was grinding away behind the concrete walls at one point in my life. In a completely different headspace.

Dont fall for the honeymoon phase pep talk they give you when you are training. Those people are paid good money to make Toyota seem promising. But they are laughing behind the scenes (literally) I took a few jokes about how long the old guys thought I would stick around at Toyota.

That being said, I made quite a few friends there as amongst the terrible work environment you really get to know people and you try and make eachother laugh. But no job has ever made me drink half a bottle of JD and 3 seroquils every night, an Adderall in the morning and drive to work with one eye open because your vision is doubled. Only Toyota.

Rotating shifts. Two weeks of days and two weeks of nights. Day shift has a much more uptight feeling. Lots of MGMT walking around so everyone plays by the rules but only to impress MGMT. Night shift things get a little more slack, like having coffee near the assembly line and having a backpack near the assembly line.

You are not given or allowed any kind of fan(s) near your job process. If im putting parts in a car while im on a ruku seat (seat the is attached to an arm that is propelled by the assembler into the car) it gets very hot inside the car. It gets extremely hot while working so you must stay hydrated. Drinking lots of water makes you have to go to the bathroom more frequently but when you ask to go to the bathroom you can wait anywhere from 10 minutes to over an hour. Team leaders will go around and talk to people and complain when they have to do a repair on a car or help someone assembling the car. The team leaders will insist they are too busy to cover you for a bathroom break but they will go and just stand by someone and talk to them for 10 minutes meanwhile they could have been covering you for a bathroom break. 
If you get soar or hurt on a job installing parts the team leaders and group leaders dont care. They will tell you when you get home to ice what ever hurts and put ruba535 on it. They are supposed to schedule for physiotherapy if you are hurting from one specific job 3 days in a row but they never send you to physio. Instead they put you on that job more often like twice a day to make your life difficult. Team leaders dont do their job. Awful MGMT. No one listens to team members because they are looked at like dogs. Favoritism is a huge problem too at TMMC. Certain team members wont have to wait for a bathroom break or  they get a very good job rotation all the time while other TM's have to wait an average of 35 mins to use the bathrooom and could be put on 2 jobs all day even thought they know 5. Extremely long hours and no one says thank you for your hard work. If there is a defect caught this could have caused a major problem you could be awarded with "catch of the week", Some meaningless thing to keep team members catching defects while they work. No one ever gets it though. They hardly say thank you if you catch a defect then they complain because they have to tag the car or have to fix the defect. I could go on and on and on and on about how backwards this place is. No one cares about you there except you. Watch your back because people are out to get you for no reason. 

I would never suggest anyone applying there. No one is happy there.

The 2 day orientation during training week made me feel like working at TMMC would be a really great experience. It took me about three months to realize that nothing presented during orientation was how things actually worked on the floor.

Harassment from management was constant and unavoidable. The "Team Leaders" I was forced to endure seemed to think it was their mission to make the job as difficult as possible. They also seemed to think that it was acceptable to try and coerce Team Members into unsafe work whenever the needs of the company demanded it. Most often these types of unsafe work situations could have been easily avoided by one of the TLs stepping in to help but they avoided having to do that like it was some sort of life-threatening situation. I won't get into the ridiculously high amount of completely unprofessional back-stabbing and derogatorily talking about people behind their backs I witnessed and endured from my TLs as well, because it would take me far too long to detail it all.

Also worth knowing that the "Human Resource" team at TMMC are quite obviously only interested in getting people to work and not in actually resolving problems. When I tried going this route to deal with the harassment, unsafe work, and lack of professionalism I ended up in a meeting with my Assistant Manager (upper management) and a member of HR. The AM said to me, in front of the HR person, that when a Team Leader uses angry and aggressive behaviour it "shouldn't be taken personally" because "they probably just got yelled at by their boss, or maybe just got chewed out by me" (referring to himself). He also said that when a Team Leader decides to schedule people in a way that constitutes unsafe work it's because of labour issues and they are just doing what they have to. Directly from the AM, in front of a member of HR, I was told that I had to tolerate abusive behaviour and unsafe work. After the AM left I spoke about these comments with the HR person and she casually swept them under the rug and made it clear that there was no intention of escalating these shocking and wholly unacceptable examples of management resolve.

I want people to understand what they are getting themselves into when working at TMMC. The management truly believes they are the elite and can treat people however they want. It is not anywhere close to worth it for what they pay and the fact that it takes 10 years to make full rate. 

There is a motto posted all over the place saying "Toyota Cares" but believe me when I say, they do NOT.

Toyota gives you great benefits and pay, so when you're not there it's a great company to work for. However, on the job is a different story all together. The work-load is inconsistent between jobs, with some being so overburdened that it is almost impossible to compete them in the allotted time while the person beside you can do their job in half the time. When this issue is brought up, you are asked "what are you going to do about it?", which is encouraging since Toyota does offer you the ability to improve and make changes to your processes. 

That is completely negated by how difficult it is to get those changes to go through. The process to submit those changes is convoluted, and little to no guidance is available on how to navigate that process. They also provide no time for you to submit those changes, making you do it on your own time, or on paid breaks. On top of that, the culture is "us vs. them", which makes getting buy-off on those changes extremely difficult. 

Advancement is possible at Toyota, but be prepared to wait a long time. The application and interview process requires you to jump through several hoops, and then wait in a long line to get that promotion. Beyond that, you have to wait until you're hired permanently from your contract before you can begin the process. Someone I know took 3 years to finally get a position.

The hiring process is another thing all together. They hire you as a contract worker, and you remain as a contract until you complete a mandatory amount of time as one - which changes, but the shortest wait I've heard recently is 3 years. Until then, you get little vacation time, no RRSP, and reduced benefits. 

Then there is the wage - which is pretty good, but they have a 10 year grow in. Starting at $21 and reaching $36, but that's a long time to wait for the full wage. It's frustrating to be working beside someone who is making over $16 an hour more than you while doing the exact same work. Actually, often the senior Team Members are given preferred jobs, so they work less for more money without getting a promotion.

In closing, Toyota gives you a good wage for the education level needed to work there, however that comes with several drawbacks. Poor management, hard work, poor work/life balance, great risk of injury due to repetitive nature of the work, and bad culture are some of those drawbacks. Apply with that in mind, and prepare to be bored.

Money: for anyone who starts now it's a fraction of what it once was & you will not be a permanent employee(with benefits/holidays) for minimum 3 years. By then your body will begin to break down from the repetitive, jarring, awkward body positions. Which the company will do their very best to deny any claims of injury resulting from the work, letalone care about your pain or you in general.

Environment: tends to be negative & toxic; mentally & emotionally wearing depending on coworkers & management in your area. It's high school, except you are surrounded by bullies with no escape. Human resources is probably the worst. I suggest audio recording ANY & ALL conversations with HR or management(GL, AM, etc.), definitely beneficial evidence for any probable future litigation. They erase their pen-written notes of what you say that is damaging to them. You are only a number & easily replaceable...definitely the common feeling amongst employees.

Work: keeping pace is strenuous, no time for a sip of water unless the line stops or you ask a TL to step in for a car.
Bathroom breaks are frowned upon, with threat of being written up.
Ambient temperatures are hot(winter) & hotter(summer), no fans or very little circulation to help cool your body temperature. If you do choose to work here or you already do, I suggest investing in a cooling vest; like the military would wear in desert atmospheres.

Work-life balance: slightly improved with afternoon Saturday overtime being spread through the week instead of the short turn around, based on the body's learned circadian rhythm. It is shift work afterall. Switch over week is usually pretty difficult the first few days or so, although shifts are 2 weeks days & 2 weeks afternoons.

A typical day at work starts with a morning meeting lead by our Group Leader informing us about the previous days work, as well as what is happening in the workplace for the day and following week. Then once the line begins moving, we build 1 car every 52 seconds so I am in my area working quickly and efficiently, and we work right until the break bell rings and it continues like that for a full 10 hour shift. 

Working in a factory setting I have immensely improved my hand eye coordination skills, as well as I have leaned how important cross referencing is to avoid any mistakes which could lead to down time and/or an unhappy customer.

Management at TMMC in my experience is very respectful, honest and if there are any issues or suggestions that Team Members may have they are very open to listening and implementing any improvements.

Working with such a large amount of people can be both fun and... interesting. There are definitely a lot of great people to work with but there are also people with strong personalities which can keep the atmosphere alive.

That hardest part about working at Toyota would have to be the job rotation. And by this I do not mean the shift work, but I mean the jobs that I do during a 10 hour shift. We do not have a large team so job rotation is minimal so where some people get to do 4 different jobs per day, I am stuck doing 1-2 jobs per day because we don't have enough people to get me properly trained on new jobs.

The most enjoyable part of my job would have to be opportunities that are given to people who want to grow within the company. I have been lucky enough to have been voted onto the Health and Safety Team by my fellow co-workers and I am also to take part in dong safety walks, participate in health and safety meetings and I am able to take suggestions from my team to the health and safety board to have ideas implemented into our area.

I worked at Toyota for a year and unfortunately had to leave due to not being home for my family.

I’m a young man in my 20’s with a wife who has aspirations of starting a family. Toyota is a great place to work if you need money and want to be able to work yourself up into a company. The problem is all of the trials you have to pass with no guarantee of being full time.

When you start, you’ll need to pass an assessment test before moving onto the physicial assessment. Do not take it lightly, you will be exhausted and sore afterwards. If you pass that, then you go to an interview. And then if you finish that, you’ll need to do a health assessment with medical professionals that they provide. If you manage to pass all of that, then you’re in. I’ve seen people give up halfway through this. Please don’t underestimate the seriousness they go through. Doesn’t end here folks.

You will need to give them 3 years worth of service before they can offer you the potential for full time with very limited benefits. If they don’t have a spot, they will have to put you on a list and will call you when there’s a spot. I don’t like coming to work hoping that I have a job waiting for me when this is all said and done.

If you can make it through the night shifts and be able to wait it out that long, then this is a job you could be interested in. TMMC offers a lot of great training that teaches you skills you will use in your life outside of work. They also offer groups and activities you can be apart of that give back to the community and have nice events where they do lunch and learns and also birthday lunches as well. Not all terrible.  But if you have a family that you want to be with and want to have a life outside of work, then I suggest you keep looking.

Hardest Part: Lack of a social outlet and body movement. I am very athletic and competitive so it is sometimes difficult to handle being seated for eight - twelve hours a day which I could easily do at Toyota. Especially during end of fiscal year and end of month at the same time! I brought in a medicine ball to sit on and geared my diet towards little exercise which created a balance.

Enjoyable Part: I call it "photocopy room networking". The photocopy room was walled with glass so you could view the people working in there and vise versa. If I noticed that there was someone I hadn't met before or someone that I really enjoyed talking to or could learn a lot from, I would do my printing at these times and have a mini discussion that goes along where when you are working with a computer for the majority of your day. Also, lunchtime with two females I met one who trained me in Finance and will be my one of my references and one who works in Human Resources. We eat lunch every day together since the very first day I worked there. All three of us in our twenty's in a predominantly older workforce.

Former employee, even though I never went over my sick days, management was happy with the quality of my work, never 'stirred the pot' causing unnecessary drama, I was still treated poorly over the years I worked there. There are some good ones, but many members of management are not qualified for their jobs and are well known for treatment of workers that is very questionable and yet HR never does anything to improve this. For example, I have had to threaten certain actions despite trying to follow company processes to resolve issues over being harassed by a Group Leader or to get the company to adhere to medical restrictions I willingly provided all documentation requested for. Poor treatment of workers dealing with mental health issues, I have had the doctor and nurses in the company's Cambridge health center state they know nothing about the medication I was on then use a google search to tell me my family doctor was wrong. Contract workers now have to wait 3-4 years to reach permanent employment despite the fact the company could not run without them, and are stuck waiting 10 years for full rate to do the exact same job as the person beside them. Job security is quite reasonable at least, you really have to do something wrong to get fired, but likelihood of promotion is very low. Benefits package is decent. Work is highly repetitve as to be expected with a factory, easily remedied with job rotation but many areas don't do enough training to have good rotation. I had very poor experiences with this company and would not recommend it.

The Toyota Production System is hailed in the manufacturing world as the greatest thing since sliced bread, but yet no other manufacturing facility can get it to work for them. ...this is because it doesn`t really exist.
The TPS is simply working your employees into the ground day after day with no slowing down.
The TM`s in assembly are required to do the work of 2 people in a time slot so short you are forced to run to keep up. Once you feel you may be able to do the job without having a heart attack, then they add more burden to your work and then as if it seems they can`t do anymore , they surprise you by cranking the line speed up and the system starts all over again...this is what Toyota means by continuous improvement.
People quit left and right and the hiring pool gets smaller and smaller but yet management doesn`t seem to understand that it is the TPS that is to blame. Human beings were not meant to be beat into the ground hour by hour without ceasing. When you are entering the plant with all the other TM`s all you have to do is watch the way they walk with their contorted bodies and listen to the jingle of their pill bottles to know this is not a family first organization.
I can go on with the long working hours, the lack of acknowledgement from management and the constant discipline for anything and everything , not to mention how they take 5 minutes from your breaktime to offset any time lost for a company event(ie: Thanksgiving dinner).
The one thing that bothers me the most is that the president of TMMC has openly said that we the team members are overpaid.
