I have been working for True North for over 5 years now. I started as an agent and was promoted to branch manager position within a year of being there. I came from the large banks so there was a lot of reluctance of leaving that security however all of my concerns vanished once i started. I was rewarded for my hard work from a financial perspective, worked in a team environment that was not micro managed. We have a great upper management that prioritize work life balance for their employees and listen to their concerns and implement staff members' ideas on how to improve the business. This is the kind of job where you get what you put into it. So if you are eager and have great customer service skills you should have no problem being successful. From a training stand point, as a manager I can attest that we train as a team however this is not an entry level position so some level of mortgage knowledge is required in order for you to be successful. I have witnessed this company grow over the years from getting our own lender, expanding and opening new location, in the process of getting licensed as a bank and creating a customer/employee experience team that makes you and your clients feel that you are their most valued employee/customer for all of your life occasions and closing your business with the company. I was on mat leave last yera so when I returned it was difficult for me to be at the office 5 days a week as I do have a long commute, our management heard our concerns and arranged for all of us to have access to home office which allows us to work from home 2-3 days a week. This has been of great help to me and my family and a great example of work/life balance that the company accommodates their staff with. My team comprises of people who are in the same life stage as myself with young families and we all feel the value of working for such a company that takes care of us, our clients and our families. We also have an annual trip that we go to meet with our upper management team to discuss new business developments as well as discussing our ideas on how to improve our business operation. This is an all expense paid for trip for all employees. In terms of income I have been making a six figure income every single year since I started working for the company. Overall I have been very satisfied working here and I see myself with the company for the long run.

You are salaried with a meagre salary that is nowhere near the 6 figure base salary that is being advertised on this website. You are micro managed as you basically work from the counter which is the same as a bank Teller with the micro-manager next to you listening when you are talking to the client and watching what you are doing. I had the bad luck to be placed with a low performing branch meaning that the manager was over eager to get the numbers in line with the others by force pressuring you. When you call on an existing client to renew, you will notice that the original originating mortgage agent is now gone and that happens over and over again. Just that information should have been a red sign when I started. Well, if the branch is underperforming and there is a high turnover, you do not need to be a genius to figure out what is wrong. The badmouthing of previous staffs who left is also terrible which is a sign of toxic work culture.

They compare themselves again the big banks but the health insurance is way below par and as it is a private company, there is also no Employer Share Purchase Plan and no professional trainers which all decrease the total overall compensation. The training is absolutely non-existent nor are the “solutions” provided by their mortgage products. Their goal is basically a no frill low mortgage rate. Well if you prefer to ride a bicycle instead of a car, that is suited for you.

To any seasoned mortgage brokers and mortgage specialists, this is not the job you are looking for. This is the same work load but at a small fraction of what you were making before. Just phone in and ask the background of those “salaried mortgage agents” and you will know what I am talking about. That job will be suited more for the underpaid CSR, car salesman, bank financial rep who make just above minimum pay or anybody angry at the big banks. Quick positive note is that the average age and tenure is young so it is dynamic and friendly. But then again, when the salary is low, you attract mainly young people who are just starting their career.

The environment was loud and I don't think they follow Privacy laws in the work environment.  Computers are unlocked with account numbers floating, notebooks are open with written account numbers.  You are scheduled to work your hours however if an agent is requesting a deal, you have to take your laptop home and finish the deal.  They like to include the "Manager's Name" on the emails so they can see your mistakes.  The people in the team was overall good but if they're in a middle of a deal and you need help, they won't attend to you.  Work balance is gone.  It's work first, family second.  There's always a target on your back if you are a new employee.  

I have been working at True North Mortgage for about 2 years now and I have nothing but great things to say about the company. You are not just a number, like a bank, but you're truly appreciated. One of the biggest things is that you can be completely open with your management (including COO and CEO) about ideas for the company and what you think should be implemented. They actually listen to what you have to say and are willing to implement good ideas. 
With regards to the compensation, it is very fair. It is a salary plus commission structure - the harder you work, the more you make! 
The flexibility in the job is also excellent - the company understands that you have other things going on in your life - kids, school, etc - and they are very willing to work around it.
Can't express enough how much I appreciate this company. Not going anywhere, anytime soon!

The experience you have with your direct manager is what determines your overall experience with the company. Unfortunately my experience was not positive due to how micro managed the manager at the specific location that I worked at. He wanted to listen to every phone call, read through every emails before you sent to client. The individual I worked with has no leadership skill, typical micro management. They made you pay for your license unless you have been with the company for 6 months to reimburse you. That was a huge red flag. Training was non-existant. They will fire you just as quick as they hire you. Think twice before leaving your secured job to come to this company. 

Good for New Agents: True North Mortgage offers quality leads and hands-on experience, which can be highly valuable for those new to the industry looking to learn quickly. However, I personally did not enjoy my experience. As someone with an entrepreneurial mindset, their business model didn’t align with how I work best. I don’t thrive in a micromanaged environment and prefer the freedom and flexibility to operate independently.

Expectations are clearly defined to meet minimum sales target, but if you miss your sales target you will be let go right away. It is not uncommon to see individuals hired/fired once every few weeks on the same team. This creates an environment where teams do not build relationships with coworkers as there is an extremely high turnover of staff. promises to earn high wages, but the bonus structure is set up for the company to retain majority of commissions earned from deals.

True North Mortgage initially provided a positive work environment with a strong sense of culture, with shared lunches and occasional treats. However, as time progressed, certain aspects of the workplace began to raise concerns. I noticed agents would be hired and fired within months if they didn't meet the minimum sales goal.

Nepotism and favouritism are big in the company. The hiring of individuals closely connected to higher-ups became apparent, creating seemingly arbitrary job titles and confusing employees regarding the organizational structure.

I've been with True North Mortgage for almost a year now & it has been a fantastic experience so far. Unlike other brokerages TNM has a great diverse culture, excellent support, great co-workers & amazing senior management team.
The company has some big plans in the near future & is on the track to be the biggest & most successful brokerages in North America.

This company has it all! Great pay, great atmosphere, management provides impeccable support. The culture is just outstanding. The CEO even brought us all to San Diego with everything fully paid at the company's expense and stayed out there for a few days. They really know how to appreciate their employees!
