Left a great job because the guys at United Rentals dangled the carrot and made it sound all rosy with promises of good pay, benefits that rival school teachers and more family time.

Once I was in the door, I was on the road maxing out my driving hours every day all week and lots of sleeping out of town in a hotel(which comes out of the annual bonus).

They run you in to the ground and at the end of your 3 months, kick you to the curb before you get to those nice benefits.  The week prior i had an excellent performance review and went out to a company sponsored supper for our branch winning the safety cup for eastern Canada.

The job ad they have posted for a driver in Sudbury, ON is my old job.  It was posted the day after they canned me.  Be warned!

The reason on my ROE is "shortage of work".

As stated above, this company is all about numbers and they will step on anyone in order to reach their goal(ie...truck idle time, how long it takes to flip a load and so on)

The truck was a 2013 Prostar with just over 200k km on it and it was down more than any truck i've ever seen.  Left me sitting on the shoulder of the highway in -40 weather when the EGR outlet tube blew up.

The trucks are GPS'd and connected to a handheld computer that manages your logs.  This system failed on a daily basis leaving me to try and mcgyver a paper log to match the digital one.  The company has no idea how to deal with paper logs and i was told they don't keep them on file when you hand them in.

Keep your dignity and look elsewhere for work

Worked in the job for two weeks when they cleaned shop. I was suppose to have 3 days of training but it turned into 4 hours. No one was interested in providing education or hands on training. As time went along, another manager was hired. A fairly nice older and knowledgeable man that turned into a corporate push over. The problems were from the institution and not the people. The shop guys were very clicky and made it difficult to get anything done if they did not like you. Friends were always getting new positions or promotions. Simply put, if you have trouble fitting in, there will be no space for you. I do not believe many of the people I have worked with are still with the company and I think that says a lot. Inside sales are expected to have a cell phone and laptop, making you on call at any time. Ot can be paid out but frowned on. Salesman were pretty cut throat. Saw some ugliness from other departments and knew about lawsuits. My opinion is you may want to look elsewhere. This company is big, and is concerned about investors. Their strategy is to buy up the competition but this provides a false bottom. Company may seem stronger than it actually is.

I worked a united rentals for a little over a year. In that time I had no safety violations of write ups of any kind. I got along with my dispatcher, supervisor and co-workers. I worked overtime when i was asked to did all my tasks. I had 1 incident JUST 1 and they fired me. First of all ive never been fired before and it is a horrible feeling. But in this situation. There was no chance to personally explain anything. The company felt that the camera footage was enough to terminate my employment without an me being able to speak to someone making decisions on the fate of my job. And this process took 2 stressful days in which i was not told of what was going on and honesty from management regarding the situation was absent. When applying for this position make sure you read and understand that you are basicly expected to be a robot and if you arent and you make a human mistake it could cost you your job. 
If you can manage corperate dog do-do this location is a good one to work at. Just watch your back around management because one day there may be a knife in it.

To be honest, I love working for United Rentals.  My location has a great team of co-workers.  They are people I can trust, and rely on in several areas of my eternal career advancement.  If it were not for them, I would not have successfully advanced into my Heavy Duty apprenticeship.  I would not have had exposure to new challenges with different equipment.  And I would not have been able to sharpen my skills without their support network of training course (in person and on-line)  

Sadly, the hardest part of my job is the slow state of this season.  I'm not the type of employee to sit still and twiddle my thumbs.  I eventually get antsy and uncomfortable from sitting idle for too long (typically around 10mins).  I have to be doing something.  If not working on equipment, organizing paper work, or cleaning my bay/tools.  Or helping new apprentices overcome their challenges (if they want it).  Some view this as impatience, or "brown nosing".  Others are offended and say things like "you're making others look bad".  It is not my intention……  And have to learn to follow everyone else's pace.

Each day consisted of building and retaining solid long term customer relationships. I learned throughout my 30 year sales career that this is the foundation in building long term success. 

Immediate management was a pleasure to work with. Upper Regional Management after the Corporate change in territory demographics left much to be desired. 

My co- workers and I fed off one another to achieve the great success we enjoyed. The most challenging part of the job was the inability to rely upon the operating condition of our equipment upon site arrival. 

I enjoyed the freedom and independence to establish and maintain accounts at my discretion. Upon each career change, in Fort Mc Murray, my customer retention attributes made each subsequent career move an even more pleasurable experience. Benefiting my new employer with immediate, pre-established new accounts. Reiterating once again, success in sales is  based most critically upon maintaining quality long term relationships.

Co workers were fine, management wants brown nosers. if your not you will never get anywhere. Very numbers orientated company. management are a different class they treat workers in operations i.e the people who actually do the work like drivers techs ect like lower class citizens. always favour there own people and put people into positions without them having the proper qualifications. my operations manager was a joke. its all in who you know. will never work for a equipment rental company again. they pride themselves in having better customer service, better equipment and better trained employees than the completion and there prices are ridiculous. complete rubbish . Avoid for the time being. no job security they have bought out a lot of smaller companies and have gotten too big now there is a downwards trend and are on there knees with there huge overheads and corporate heavy managers.

What is the best part of working at the company?
large corporation with deep pockets,  too structured in the sense that more time is spent on reporting than taking care of customers, or making sure the equipment is on par for the customer's needs. 


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
structure too rigid. 
company policy overrules common sense to make the branch operate efficiently. a haven for Mom and Pop shops that know and work with their customers

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
an employee from a smaller company would be easily intimidated or frustrated with the excessive reporting,  often to people who do not understand the different environments of vast geographical regions/conditions. 


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
7 am morning stretches, debrief as a group from previous day, and set the day plan

The hours are long, and in service tech positions there is an on call component. Once someone leaves the job they do not bother replacing that person and makes the remaining employees cover that gap, which means frequency of on calls  increases, so does work load.  If you work late and cover shifts that has no coverage at all they will pretend to be thankful, but if there was ever a need to return favors that will never happen. any mistake you make no matter how clean your record has been they will show you no mercy. Some branches and divisions have vehicles without GPS which is a small perk but otherwise there is not much to say. Managers throw parties where employees have to buy them gifts because they are celebrating a promotion. Some of these employees make a few dollars above min wage

Day to day work is easy and work / life balance is good, the pay is decent as well. Upper managment promotes change and open doors but all the problems betweens groups gets shelved and no solutions provided. No support to the managers who want to create a better environment and move employee's and processes forward. Money is waisted and jobs lost due to extremely poor execution of processes and people acountability. Many under experienced managers leading to bad moral and an unhappy work force. The list of problems in this company (seeming to be focused in the West soley) is long and would require alot more space to display. There is a lot of current employee's there whom take thier career and the customers seriously, they just need action's and solutions on the internal issues that plague this company to create growth and a better future.

Prepare all calls and objectives per account for the days following.Call on 10-15 accounts per day depending on travel times and look for sales,rentals and safety supply opportunities.There was alot of traveling as some accounts were remote such as miines and construction sites.This job helped to refine some of myweaknesses such as time managementand and also helped to add areas to my strengths in closing,brand awareness and opportunity spotting. My co-workers were supportive and open to discussions but the manager tended to be hands of and hard to relate with.When the long days were done and i could tally up my accomplishments per objectives and saw i ended off ahead of that days plan was the best and most rewarding part to me.
