Vue Cinemas

My year working here was one of the most oppressing experiences of my career. 
It is a company that is so unaware of it's product it could be selling cardboard boxes or pencils. It really wouldn't matter to them. It is not about film or passion for the industry it is about you as a customer service assistant up-selling the customer to get a bigger drink+popcorn, add a hotdog and nachos to that. 
It is a conveyor belt of stacking them high and selling them not very cheap. 

At the end of every shift the duty-manager has a print out of the transactions you did, where you up-sold and what products you haven't sold and quizzes you on why you haven't made more money. If the balance of the till is out  by a small amount more than 3 times it is immediately assumed that you are trying to steal. You are interviewed and threatened with disciplinary action. (the only place I have worked that treats it staff like this) There is a real culture of fear of doing anything wrong constructed. It is always 'management' against 'front of house' and not  'we are all a team'. 

On the days where it is really busy and they want to "reward" you they might give you a 12oz coke cup....wow..don't blow the bank. 
I have worked at companies that don't do quarter the same turn over but reward you better than this on a daily basis. 
If there is any food left at the end of the day, you are threatened with disciplinary action if you eat any. It must all be thrown out. 

You work very unsociable hours (sometimes getting out at 4am) and NO renumeration is offered for this. You are still on minimum wage. Most decent companies offer you increased pay after midnight to compensate you for this, or a taxi ride home, or even a meal. 

The fact that the company uniform is suits for managers and shirts,slacks and a peak cap for FOH staff goes to show how corporate and unimaginative the company is. Film is supposed to be a creative industry, but we are dressed like accountancy clerks. 

This company is here to exploit their workers. They all have such large employee turnovers because they will hire anyone who walks in off the street, and in turn they provide the minimum they can get away with. Most of the time I was there customers didn't know what brand of cinema they were in. 

NOT a moral or caring employer. 
NO need to be interested in film, just making money for the company as fast as possible. 
Head office clearly have no idea that they are in the film business, nor do they have any idea what it is like to work on the shop floor. 

Having spoken with friends than have worked at the two other large multiplex chains and we all shudder at the same unpleasant and abusive experiences these identical companies gave us.

Vue is a very varied place to work. You will gain many transferable skills such as leadership, communication, health and safety and good cleaning skills.

That being said, you can end up feeling run into the ground. Unless you really want to progress into management, do not become a Training Buddy - same pay for management level responsibilities! 

It is a very social job and you will make a lot of good friends. It is a predominantly student populated workplace (including Team Leaders) so you will find you end up devoting much of your free time to work - up to 15-25 hours per week! Take this into account and tell your HR Managers your availability and how many hours you could work on top of uni/college work otherwise it all piles up. 

However, all in, if you can survive working for Vue, you can work anywhere.

Great colleges and a good environment to work in. However, the pay is not great and the hours are very unsociable. A normal day would consist of working as part of a team to complete tasks, such as keeping everything stocked for a busy day. Every few months I would be on shift with a new start who I would train.

Vue Cinema can be a fun place to work with meeting new people and serving customers but the late finishes are definitely the worst thing about the job.

The Vue Hamilton is a great place to work everyone is very friendly, helpful and you are always kept on your feet. Ive never had any problems with the job or the people the only thing pulling me away is the salary.

Benefits are great compared to most cinemas

Flexible around uni/college, very fast paced and can be a lot to keep up with sometimes. Free cinema tickets are a plus and the other employees make it a fun place to work 

Expect you to do 100 things at once, managers don’t have a clue, can be stressful at times only good thing about the cinema is the people you work with
