Prepare yourself for a harrowing tale of corporate dysfunction and leadership malpractice as I recount my nightmarish journey within the confines of WM. 
If you value your mental and emotional well-being, run – don't walk – away from this organization plagued by toxic management, unscrupulous leadership, and a disregard for the very essence of ethical conduct.

From the outset, it became painfully evident that WM had plunged headfirst into a pit of leadership ineptitude. A haphazard and chaotic management structure reigned, with directives shifting like sand in the wind. Clarity was as rare as a unicorn, and accountability an abstract concept. The leadership's inability to provide consistent guidance or foster an environment of collaboration led to an atmosphere of frustration and disillusionment among employees.

To label the treatment of employees as merely "poor" would be an understatement of monumental proportions. The leadership's brand of toxicity was a masterclass in demoralization, as they wielded their power with an iron fist. Micromanagement was the order of the day, suffocating creativity and innovation. Team members were reduced to mere cogs in a soulless machine, their potential stifled and their contributions unappreciated.

The casualties of this corrosive leadership style were plentiful. Burnout became the company's unofficial motto, as long hours, unreasonable demands, and an insatiable hunger for results eroded any semblance of work-life balance. Employee morale plummeted as the chasm between their dedication and the leadership's disregard for their well-being grew ever wider.

But what truly beggars belief is the manner in which senior management insulated themselves from the fallout of their own catastrophic leadership. While the workforce groaned under the weight of their toxic decisions, these so-called leaders reveled in their ivory tower, impervious to the misery below. The profits extracted from the sweat and sacrifice of their employees seemed to fuel an arrogance that blinded them to the very real human toll of their actions.

Attempts to communicate concerns or suggest improvements were met with a dismissive wave or a thinly veiled threat. The leadership's penchant for punishing dissent further cemented the culture of fear and silence, creating an environment where speaking out was akin to professional suicide. The notion of servant leadership was nothing more than a cruel joke, as these leaders remained firmly committed to their self-serving agendas.

In closing, WM stands as a chilling example of how toxic and poor leadership can dismantle even the most promising of organizations. The cancer of their managerial malpractice has spread throughout the company, corroding its values and leaving its employees in a state of disillusionment and despair. If you have any respect for your mental and emotional well-being, heed this warning and steer clear of this den of toxicity. Your dignity and sanity are worth far more than the shattered remains of a company that lost its way.

1) TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT. REVOLVING DOOR. In the past 5 years, there have been 5-6 people who were hired and left. Nobody stays a full year in this place. This is a 6-month job. You will never sell anything in SK bc the people trust the competitor. This company has made terrible decisions in the past and has upset too many people in SK, including C-level executives of major companies so they do not want to do business with WM. The guy in charge locally will tell you (along with the person who trains everyone, from Calgary) that you need to fill your CRM as much as possible and you need to get contract expiration dates from as many businesses as possible. This way, after they make your life impossible, his childhood friend (who also works in saskatoon) will take over and sell to the customers you created in the CRM. 

COMPANY CULTURE is just toxic. Constant fights and “training sessions” where people are singled out and called derogatory names. This job is perfect for you if you know nothing about sales, if you’re unemployed or if you have low IQ/AQ. TELEMARKETING you will be told which words are strong and which words are weak; you will be expected to memorize a set of words that is approved and you will have to stay on the phone, calling different companies and repeating that set of words. If you deviate from that specific set of words, you will be singled out. NO TERRITORY territory is just a word in this company; anyone can sell in SK; the guy in charge will allow his friends from other provinces to sell in SK and you will never see commissions from that. 

5) NO COMMISSIONS customers can order services through the 1-800 number and online; also, the national sales team will sell in SK and you will never see any commission from that. 

6) METRICS there is a measurement for everything; the way you breathe, the way you walk; you will spend more time clicking on boxes in a program than actually going after business. 

7) SOFTWARE you are obligated to use several different programs but the 2main ones do sync so you have to enter some data twice and you will always be held responsible for the fact that things dont work properly.   8) CONSTRUCTION ACCOUNT MANAGER. This company is more expensive than all other competitors and they do not offer services such as fencing and toilets to construction companies. All competitors offer these so you will be walking around trying to sell a more expensive service that is nowhere near as comprehensive as what the competitors offer. The statement “we are a premium company” comes from arrogance and nothing else. They offer nothing premium about their services.

A typical day consist of collaborative team work, listening and following instructions with attention to detail. Following health and safety precautions. Hands on physical work, lifting, bending, crouching ect. 

Through this opportunity I have developed further skills on health and safety precautions, taking initiative, working with a diverse team of individuals working in the community and ultimately gaining knowledge and importance of waste management.   

Management was very informative, employee and customer focused. Provided a very friendly and inviting environment. Encouraging and over-all a great experience to gain and inquire skills. 

The workplace consist of a diverse team of co-workers, together helped each other to work towards a goal/ work orders. If conflict occurred would typically be resolved in a professional, mature manner. Employees for the majority got along and had a bond. 

This job in particular had a demand for heavy physical work. Which was challenging and took some time adjusting to. However in the end I saw this challenge as an opportunity to work harder, learn from some weaknesses I've had. Understanding the importance to safety precautions, especially when it came to lifting, bending, crouching and posture. It goes a long ways to use proper body mechanics.

Over-all through my work experience I enjoyed working in my community and contributing back. Meeting new employees and getting along well with my fellow co-workers. Work hours and salary were reasonable

I was a recycling collector for a number of years and have worked in multiple municipalies. I started at Waste Management after the previous company I was employed with lost their contract. Waste Management is the absolute worst company I've EVER worked for. The pay is less than I got for doing half the the work I used to at the previous company. Their trucks are terrible, The general morale is terrible, The union won't help you in the slightest when you need them (been waiting months to hear back from a greivance) and managements attitude towards their employees is as if their always out to get you and then they wonder why they can't find driver's. It got to the point where they were so desperate they were offering to pay for new hires DZ licences! Working here you can also expect to have a LYTX drivecam in your face all day so if you so much as hit a bump or apply the brakes hard that footage gets sent to management and you better hope you weren't following too close because that's one of the several rules they escalated to automatic termination. Basically if they have any issue with you they will find a way to quickly fire you. In my case it was a couple weeks after mentioning a possible medical condition that I was fired for "tampering with a safety device" for having a gatorade bottle cap resting on top of the tailgate alarm speaker... I had never recieved any disciplinary action prior and I worked my a** off for them but "coincidentally" as soon as they found out I might be an issue I was gone.

Typical day at work involved starting at 3:30am (this was never mentioned during the hiring process.) and finish around 1pm in the office but drivers will still call your cellphone until the end of the day (4-5pm). The start of the day would be a huddle with the drivers to discuss a short topic for 5 minutes. This had to be done on a precise and rigid scheme adopted by all offices and locations in the whole company. Same as the pre-trip inspection routine for the drivers.

As a manager there is extreme pressure to find "faults" in driver's behavior on the road or through the camera systems installed in the trucks. A minimum number of drivers need to be "coached" every day to meet higher management's expectations. Failure to meet these requirements would end up in the manager being "coached" for failure to meet these expectations.

I believe the compensation would be decent if no overtime or only occasional overtime was required. But in the end work required to be available even when at home and on Saturdays (from home), averaging 60-70 hours of work every week.

People working at the company are good and friendly and the direct superiors and colleagues tried to promote a friendly atmosphere. Unfortunately the job requirements and expectations for the position are extremely challenging due to corporate's requirements.

It would be a good position for a young person willing to learn and step into management and progress from there.

After being on the road for years, i switched trades and got this job to be closer with my family, and it has more than provided in that aspect. Anytime I need a personal day or have to leave for an issue at home there is no question asked and that alone is worth a lot. The pay is great for a Monday to Friday compared to other places. Great benefits. As a tech the job requires self motivation but is very relaxed. Opportunity for lots of experience, every day is different on the post collections side of things. Opportunity for overtime with approval if needed but is essentially your choice.

Downsides would be communication and logistics. Being such a large company there is a an equally sized chain of command. logistics can be frustrating at times with approved vendors ordering supplies/parts. But anything we have asked for within reason we have gotten with no questions asked.

I would reccomend this job to anybody looking to get in the trade. Great experience. Great bosses. Great coworkers. People turn their noses at garbage but if you can get past the stigma, it really is a fun place to work. Overall I'm very happy

The entire process of getting hired from start to finish was seemless. You can tell they really care about your safety as well as the safety of others. I've worked at other companies that would have you on the road the same day as your interview. WM really takes their time to go through the process of training and making sure you are comfortable before putting you out solo. This is a great place to start a future as there is plenty of work and overtime to go around. If your willing to work hard and put in the hours you can really set yourself up. Only drawback would be alot of old drivers living in the 60s, constant complaining about work that make the environment dark and gloomy. Always trying to find an excuse to bash the company, if they actually put that same energy towards working the driver mentality would be alot better. My advise stay clear of the drama, and focus on your work. I'm fortunate enough for the opportunity to work here and continue to grow. The company can definitely grow more if everyone just did their share. Only con is unionized environment which means even the worst employee gets a free ride while doing the bare minimum. 

stayed with this company for a long time because i had just started a family and need the medical benefits. This company does not no the meaning of the word team. It is every man for him or herself here!! Not having the equipment to do your job which includes trucks, parts to fix the trucks, a good reliable crew to get the routes done are just some of the many faults at this company! All you want to do is get the job done and go home but management makes this a absolute nightmare. The cut throat world at the management end of this company is something else. I left this company feeling i had wasted years of my life!! To make a long story short don't get trapped here and feel like there is nothing else out there. The day i left this company that night i got the best sleep of my life!!! Get out while you still can. You clock in and start working. You have to learn to multitask because you might be working on a truck in the bay and a Driver comes in needs something done on his truck so you have to stop doing what you were working on and help him/her . Management / drivers always making mistakes and trying to blame mechanics .

I currently work at WM and I strongly recommend not working here. 
We are short staffed currently but are still expected to carry a workload of a fully staffed "team", morale is incredibly low and the turnover is incredibly high with people leaving on a consistent basis. Communication between staff and management is almost non existent. Union contract negotiations have shown that the company refuses to pay a fair wage to reflect the amount of work that is done on a daily basis. We have staff members that have worked less than 1 year that got injured due to the sheer workload that gets handed down, all while management gets to sit in their nice and secure offices while the rest of us are busting our backs to make sure things are done.
It will get better as long as the city puts forth the effort to fund a collection system to greatly lessen the labor thats being done, but I doubt it'll be a thing for a while. So until then, just save yourself from ruining your body and dealing with being in a stressful work environment. If you can somehow get onto the commercial side of WM then I would aim for that instead.

I started with the company in 2005, as a front line Manager, and progressed over the 7 years I was employed, to District Manager. The company sold up and left town back in 2012, but my time, overall was one of the best - very stressful at times, but the support network was second to none, and the structure and systems were light years ahead of the competition. There were tough times, but I can honestly say I have nothing negative to say about this employer - fantastic family atmosphere & great safety culture. In my last 2 to 3 years at the District, I had the honour to work with a great team, and fantastic group of professional drivers & support employees & staff. I believe one of my lowest seniority employees had 10 years seniority - that speaks for itself. From the bottom to the top, your opinion counted, and regular employee surveys were carried out by external (confidential) bodies, and all findings acted upon. Where else can you find that? Also, they continually asked their customers (with surveys) what they thought about WM. If you get the call, it will be the best decision you can make ....
