They appear to be a great company, but a lot of shady stuff goes on behind closed doors. If you have a issue and need written up because short handed they will not deal with it that day they will wait several days tell you all is fine and then suspend you or fire you several days after the incident. They’ll tell you your doing great and are happy with you and hope you enjoy, it then 2-3 days before probations over they said your not working out, they give your no opportunity to adjust behaviours no warnings nothing and your micro managed to the 9 management is on the rocks and city contract will likely not be renewed. Until then you’ll break your neck for a company that will be sneaky and underhanded until you say enough and leave or they terminate you. It’s all about safety until you say I don’t want to do that or this because it’s not safe. you’ll do it with no complaints or they’ll find away to push you out and it’s never one or 2 it will be everyone they’ll take pictures of you and report report report. You’ll be happy to get out with a clean cvor and with some kind of dignity.
ads they state Monday to Friday it’s not so 6am start times is not so it’s every Saturday and 1 day off during the week and Sunday. They say overtime but management will say no overtime can’t afford it. Just alot mixed messages and alot ways to be fired or suspended to meet the demand of how many ppl they need. Example you can have a incident 2-3 weeks earlier and be wrote up and be told you not going to be suspended or fired 2-3 weeks later when they don’t need as many ppl slow time they’ll review who’s been written up and what actions were taken by supervisors and management will say no we aren’t signing off as approved discipline and you’ll be suspended for 1-5 days or fired even tho you’ve worked 2-3 weeks after and think all is fine.


Typical day at work: Show up around 6:30am, have the daily tailgate meeting and then go out and do your run as fast as you can so you can go home, often times you need to help other trucks finish their runs as well.
The hardest part of the job would probably be 1, the weather and 2, being told on a regular basis that you aren't doing good enough after busting your butt all day.
The most enjoyable part of the job is always going to be going home, but I also like the interactions with my coworkers.

Management seems to forget how to treat their employees with respect, I have been threatened by management so many times that I've just stopped bringing things up.
If you complain about literally anything they will threaten to cut a run (for no reason) which basically doubles your work load. And then on top of that, when we are severely understaffed they have the audacity to complain about over weight fines and not getting the materials off the street in time even though those issues could easily be solved by being sufficiently staffed.
Management also has no issue with talking about you behind your back. The amount of times the supervisors have said nasty stuff about drivers with me behind their back is outrageous, and then when I say "Hey, maybe you should talk to them about this." You think it happens? Nope. So I have to be the bad guy and let the driver know that there is a target on their back.

Oh! and when I bring up safety concerns I get a whopping "well maybe you should quit if you can't handle your job." Thanks, I've taken that into consideration.

This is a great place to cut your teeth as a salesperson.  The pay is very fair for entry level outside sales, and the benefits are great.  Management practices the servant leadership style and is very committed to help you succeed.

The service they sell is a tough one to pitch, and the customers can be cranky about certain certain policies.  Without divulging any industry/company secrets, it definitely takes a certain personality to promote and stand behind their services, but if you have that personality and the drive to make sales I think there is room to make very healthy commissions each month.

The office staff are treated very well (especially at they nearby Kelowna branch) with expense accounts, lunches, coffee, snacks etc.  The role is very self managed, meaning you can make your day as long or as short as you like, of course, your pay depends on your sales, so you tend to stay motivated.  There is a work from home option as you work is mostly on the road, but it was heavily encouraged by management to spend at least a few minutes in the office each morning to maintain relationships with the staff and attend meetings, etc.

WCC is a great place to really get a taste of an executive sales job without all of the travel, industry events, fancy dinners and all of the other things many in the sales world are tired of.  Be prepared to pop on a yellow vest and a pair of steel toed boots once and a while!

Working for this company was one of the most frustrating experiences of my career. The lack of proper training was alarming. Instead of providing the guidance I needed to succeed, my trainers seemed more interested in comparing me to previous employees, making me feel inadequate from day one. It was disheartening to hear about the shortcomings of those who came before me, especially when I was trying to find my footing in a new role.

The workplace culture was far from professional. Coworkers frequently used profanity and made inappropriate jokes, creating an uncomfortable environment. It felt less like a team and more like a high school cafeteria where cliques thrived and respect was nonexistent. Instead of fostering a supportive atmosphere, the negativity and unprofessionalism were palpable, making it difficult to focus on my work. You would have people talking behind each other’s backs instead of focussing on their work.

To make matters worse, the management seemed to have no qualms about sharing gossip about why past employees were let go. This kind of behavior not only undermined morale but also created a culture of fear and insecurity. Instead of feeling empowered to learn and grow, I felt trapped in a toxic environment that stifled creativity and collaboration.

Overall, my time at this company was disappointing and unfulfilling. If you're seeking a place that values professionalism, proper training, and a respectful workplace culture, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

Here’s a list of the good :
1. A steady, reliable, good income. 
2. Pretty good benefits. 
3. A really great group of guys to work with. ( So long as you share the same shift and job position ). Emphasis on shift. 

Now here’s a list of the bad :
1. Safety and integrity are the first and second core values of the company but safety only really matters if/when it’s cheap and there is practically no integrity whatsoever unless you have physical documentation of spoken word with management. 
2. The management is a boys club and they run the company like it’s a small family business. You’re made to feel like an outsider if you aren’t a friend or relative. 
3. There is no positive recognition of any kind. Everything you do will go unnoticed unless you make a mistake. You’ll be lucky to get a “Thank you for…” once a year. 
4.  There are different rules for different people and if you think, “They must draw the line somewhere!”. You’re wrong. 
5.  There is absolutely no work/life balance. This place will drain the life out of you and every shred of sanity and happiness you thought you had is going to wither away. 
6. The work load is unrealistic on a good day and don’t expect it to change just because 1 or 2 of your coworkers are on holidays, unless it’s the manager because he refuses to be useful even when he’s there. 

I had a successful Sales Career for 21 years, 10 with my last employer, but was looking for more "work-life balance." I was nervous to begin a new career after such a long time working in a completely different industry. But right from the beginning, the staff at Waste Connections made me feel very welcome. 

The Interview was very in depth but the Manager was genuine and friendly. The Career Description turned out to be what it was described to me as in the interview. I have come to since learn, that the Management in our District are very professional and they keep the team strong by having a positive culture and allowing each person to feel like they are valued and part of a Team-Family. 

I have learned so much about the Waste Industry in the past few months and feel confident and productive fully in my position now. I love coming to work every day, (something I used to believe didn't exist) and the bonus is that I get a healthy amount of time off for myself and my family.  Work-Life Balance really is an obtainable lifestyle with Waste Connections.  Servant Leadership is a proven system. 

Waste Connections really is a great place to work.  I have been employed with the company for only 2.5 years but at the same location for 20 years and our company was acquired through an acquisition in 2016.  Over the years I have worked for 3 other companies which have all been sold but I remained on with the new company.  I speak from experience when I say that out of the multiple companies I have worked for, Waste Connections is the one that I can truly say cares about its people.  The Servant Leadership culture has taught me a lot about how to be a better manager and also a better person in gereral.  I have read a lot of the other reviews on Indeed about our company and I noted that most of the bad ones came from former employees who likely couldn't get on board with company expectations or culture.  Their loss.  If you are considering making the jump - DO IT!  You won't be dissapointed!

Not really what I would expect from a company like this.  Basically you are told one thing in the interview and then they use you like a band aid to fill in anywhere they need you.  The benefits are terrible, you need a doctors note to use any of them, and then when you submit the claim they pay like 15 bucks towards it?  I might as well pay it all myself and make more per hour with no benefits.  The equipment is in pretty poor condition considering the size of the company.  If I write something up on the trucks the mechanics sign off but don't fix it (I can tell the engine cab wasn't tipped because none of my stuff moved from where I left it the night before).  Anytime you go into the shop they are all busy drinking coffee or having a meeting of some sort.  This job pays the bills but I don't think its a long term fit for me.

Worked for the Parksville branch for 6 months. Mon-Fri was nice, the only reason the pay was good because of the mandatory overtime. $23.55 is not enough an hour to break your body and hold a commercial drivers license. They push there employees to the limits especially if one person calls in. The drivers have to pull together to finish the extra route.  When there was heavy smoke from the wild fires this past summer I got sick and called in the following day, I literally collapsed when I got home and definitely had symptoms of smoke inhalation. The manager tried to pressure me into coming in after I stated I wasn’t safe behind the wheel, I never call in unless it’s serious. For a company that preaches safety and base their future work on their safety rating. They dropped the ball on this one. Would I recommend working here ? Yes, but don’t make it a career. The general public is crazy when it comes to garbage collection, they treat you like their slave.

I listen to books on tape while I work, It keeps me calm and sometimes I can't wait to get back to work to find out what happens in my stories.
I believe in Customer Service and so does Waste Management so we have no conflicts between us. The hardest part of the job is Overtime, I do not plan anything after work on weekdays, and that keeps my stress level down, I have done the job for over 30 years, and watch new guys always get upset about plans they make right after work, and a breakdown happens, or it's just a heavy day and their whole world comes crashing down. My plans are always for the weekends, and I am rarely stressed. The best part of the job is little kids waving and getting all excited, They are a real boost to the ego. This is the best job if you have kids in school, You see them every night and you have weekends off the same as them.
