Upper management (area managers and above) are allowed and almost encouraged to speak to staff however they like whether professional or not. If you are not in the core group of long term staff you are expected to keep your head down and do whatever is screamed at, emailed or texted to you. Texts and calls will come at all hours of the day with no regard to your personal life. You are expected to answer and do whatever menial task they require working or not.

Management is paid a salary based on 40 hours, you will never work 40 hours. They expect over 40 hours every week and will find ways to make sure you know you are not performing if you do not. The carrot of being paid back time is dangled, you will never be paid back your time. The real expectation is 42-44 hours weekly.

Area managers and regional managers are toxic, probably the most toxic group in the company and the ones you will have to engage with most. They will belittle, demean, and make work unbearable, HR will do nothing so don’t bother reporting anything. It is the perfect example of a family run business there are zero checks and balances.

Training is non existent however you will be held accountable to understanding all processes in the company within a month. Policies are not available if they exist at all and so the company lacks any consistency. Ask 3 people you will get 3 different answers.

Zero communication and planning occurs from upper management to store level. Sales are decided on the fly with sometimes less than a week notice, you are required to change your schedule to work all sales days. And require entire staff to work regardless of availability or prior plans. Communication is frequently distributed incorrectly and corrected hours or days later. Upper management will make broad statements and later pretend they have no knowledge of that communication. Favouritism is the culture of the company. If you are not a favourite you don’t exist.


It is not uncommon to be required to step out of your job expectation entirely to do tasks for the company that you are not paid to do, managing rental property, picking up furniture, driving staff to and from places to complete work, picking up things needed for store merchandising, organizing maintenance of tenant living spaces.

-Lots of standing around during the day
-You will be required to learn a lot of information, training is not super structured so you will sped a lot of time trying to learn by yourself
-Work days are always the same length (this is definitely an advantage over typical retail)
-Hours are not ideal for someone with a family, especially if you do not drive. You will be home just in time to put your kids to bed, and not much time to spend with them. 
-Days off are during the week, weekend days are usually given to more valuable employees.
-Benefits are decent, but a bit expensive once they finally sign you up for them. Plan leaves a lot to be desired in terms of covered drugs and services.
-The policies the company enforces will get you yelled at regularly, even though they are not your policies. 
-We were told to encourage people to post 5-star reviews in order to boost our Google rating, by using incentives.
-Management was pretty good, but could definitely improve communication skills.
-Schedules were a bit of a mess, and people were often confused because they were not posted anywhere except at the front desk. 
-Hardest part of the job is remembering all the details about products, since you are expected to know it all. 
-Most enjoyable part of the job is getting to see adorable squishy babies all day, and building relationships with great customers who value you.


I was hired in 2016 with all stat holidays off, and paid lunch breaks.  By the time I left, we were working every stat holiday aside from Christmas, and breaks were no longer paid. I have also seen in these reviews that some people say you got free lunch sometimes, but never in my time there. The only time you get food is on major sale days, that you have to work nearly 12 hours with no break.

Management  is rude, not willing to help and constantly tries finding fault in you even when you've been doing the same task for months. You will be given different instructions from different people and then get ready for long speeches about what you did wrong. Most stuff is not even important to you considering your wage and there is a high possibility that the manager will do stuff the wrong as well. Staff is non supportive, trying to point fingers at each other and always try to make you feel inferior about yourself being a new hire. Mind me you'll be called "new" even after good 6-7 months here. You'll really know what it likes to be working at a small business because you will end up working late hours and on tasks that are not even a part of your job description.The setting needs more computers to sustain high staff volume. Waiting time makes it frustrating for customers as well as employees. The break room is a small table in the office which is always occupied with people chit chatting. And breaks are never really breaks because get ready to listen to the staff yelling at each other in the office. People are going to be in your space, will touch you even when you ask them to respect your boundaries. Don't expect confidentiality from your manager because the the entire store is gonna know your life story the next day. And never ask for a leave because people will hate you and your coworkers are gonna cover your section + theirs and will probably asked to stay overtime. Overall, a very toxic environment with no scope of growth.

As a former employee of the company I can say that turnover is so high that almost every month there’s a batch of three or four staff that come in to get trained and maybe one sticks around for more than a month. A few were so done with the poor treatment of staff and tactlessness of management that they clocked out and walked off the job or just never came back in. Schedules are never posted in a reasonable amount of time, and it’s next to impossible to ask for time off or schedule accommodations because management is so unapproachable. Part of the senior team is so cliquey that gossip is an issue as well, so it makes the working environment tense. Training is also a disorganized mess, it seems structured at first but it is not consistent so not all staff are equally trained. Wage compensation is also not worth the stress of the job, the level of knowledge and customer service you have to provide, plus whatever additional tasks you might be given, it makes you feel overworked and under paid. It’s the closest thing to a commission based sales job without the perk of commission.  Also don’t expect a raise for taking on more responsibility either. If you’re considering a position here I would recommend against it until management gets an overhaul. 

A typical day at work involved a lot of receiving, organization of inventory, filling online orders and filling in-store orders. I learned that I enjoy the challenge of warehouse logistics and love to engage in physical labour. Management was ok at first but gradually descended into toxicity because people didn't agree on methodology and never gave straightforward feedback. It seemed like my immediate supervisor would take her frustration out on me with any mistakes I made depending on what was happening in her personal life at the time. Our relationship was rocky and barely professional. My manager also directly threw me under the bus for a complaint about smoke breaks made by upper management despite her encouraging this activity frequently. The workplace culture was very toxic; people would often express their distaste for others behind their backs to myself and their cliques. It seemed very high-school girl drama, probably because a lot of them were either fresh out of high-school or in their first years of college/uni. The hardest part of the job was dealing with the constant criticism without offer of solutions by management. The most enjoyable part of the job was the physical labour I engaged in daily; I felt extremely strong and limber.

1. Management is horrible. For each month, the manager has to take at least a week vacation. Different managers have different view-point and you are "forced" to choose a side, and it was terrible. They are quite abusive emotionally and show bias to whoever sell the most.  
2. For every 5 hour shift, you have a 30min UNPAID break. Most shifts usually end 30min after the expected end time (so, it rounds up to you have no break at all). 
3. Co-workers like to steal sales from the new people (i.e, they like to "take over" your customers and make you little in front of everyone). Managers say that everyone is collaborative, not it's only on the surface. BULLYING is real at the workplace. 
4. Co-workers constantly go back on their words (ex: they say one person only has to do closing duties once a week, but if you're the only new person there, you are expected to do the dirty cleaning all the time).  
5. Training is minimal. You are expected to learn everything by yourself. Each co-workers will give conflicting information about the products. 
6. The wage is okay, but the hours suck. 8-hours of constant walking, and the bus nearby is once every half hour.

TLDR: the wage is nice, but everything else is horrible (especially for warehouse workers). Don't work here unless you need quick money.

I was constantly yelled at and embarrassed in front of other employees. My personal life was gossiped about from an employee I thought was a friend, to my managers. Who then treated me horribly and went around asking my fellow employees if they had seen anything I had done that they could fire me for. They couldn't fire me because I never did anything wrong. They forced extra work on me knowing I was PREGNANT. They didn't care about me at all. And I later found out that they were paying me less than everyone else at the store. Even tho I had more retail experience than some of them. It made coming to work very depressing for me. But I needed the hours for mat leave. I even witnessed a customer verbally attacking one of the other employees and when she tried to go to my boss for help she told her to "suck it up" instead of going out there and supporting her employee! Just absolutely disgusting behavior that I have never seen at any other job I've ever had. Super toxic.

My very first day here I was told by management that they were too busy to train me and to just walk around, for 8 hours. I immediately wanted to jump ship, not stressing training for your new hires screams lazy management (ie; you're crazy busy and need people, but you don't have time to train them?) but the high pay kept me wanting to stay at least until I found another job. 

I spent the next few shifts getting berated for random things. It became very clear they didn't like me and I don't know if it's because I asked them questions about what I should be doing or if it was because I took risks with customers sometimes because I had zero guidance? They literally refused to tell me.

I finally quit after the first week because I got a customer complaint, which is fine that happens just take me into the office and I'll take my lickings, but the manager told me about it and scolded me on the sales floor in front of customers and my co-workers, and then proceeded to tell my co workers about it as an example of what not to do! I was mortified.

West Coast Kids is the worst place I have ever worked. The warehouse  is a cramped, chaotic mess so it is impossible to find anything. They do not care about the safety of their employees, we were regularly told to do thing like climb out of a raised forklift basket into the racks to grab products, or stand on top of the movable staircases guardrails to reach high up products, the emergency exits were blocked with store products half the time, etc. Management does an awful job training employees, they give very minimal training and said "you'll figure it out as you go" so I had no idea what was going on most of the time. Despite my lack of training I was regularly told that I was doing a great job, I was not expected to know everything right away and I was improving everyday. I was then fired after two weeks with no warning. I just received a call telling me "it wasn't working out", when I tried to ask why he replied "I have been in the warehouse  industry a long time and... it's just not working out". Do yourself a favor and stay far away from West Coast Kids

The atmosphere between workers is fine but when looking at management, they don't care who you are and try to flex whatever power they have over you. Like I have never seen anyone try to belittle their employees so much, just because the employee keeps to theirself and tries to get the work done without being "friends" with everyone. The management here should be revised so that the company doesnt have such a high turnover rate. I have seen people come in for 2 days and quit because of the management at Westcoast. The managers I had were snakes, in the sense that they would tell you to do something and then when they don't like it, its all your fault because they can't take responsibility for what they had you do. I have personally seen them tell employees to take a product home so they can bring it to another store the next day, and then they gave the employee trouble when the owner found out and reemed them out for it.
