In production there are many good people to work with. TT(although they are trying to change that for certain positions): day, afternoon, nights. Day shifts are the fasted pace with lots of truck traffic and products arriving the most. Generally people are friendly, helpful and easy to get along with. The challenges come from the cleanliness. There is no way one can stay clean or not smelly working there unless you work an office job. But even then the office building space smells. The on site shower has very good water pressure and allows you to shower before going home, but the smells will still go home with you one way or another. The pay is decent for those without too advanced of education.

But if you work in production be weary of a certain foreman. His need to feel like a boss and superior makes him talk down to the workers when he's just a floor worker himself. A number of good people have left over the years partly because of him. His radio communication is also very unclear and ineffective; he mumbles his words and gets upset when workers have not followed his instructions. Because we simply have a hard time understanding him. Instead of providing meaningful feedback or helpful information, he often takes those opportunities to make fun of us. Behind management's back he talks poorly of them but also likes to remind others he's part of management. He's not; he's a floor supervisor who rotates shifts.

All in all, West Coast is a good company that pays decently and provides really good benefits. People are nice and mostly good at their jobs. But toxicity definitely exists here because of certain individual

On a typical day I would come in to work and then make a round through the plant and talk to all of the process operators and check the shift logs in each control rooms (4) to see how things were running through the last 16 hours.
 Then I would talk with the plant shift foreman to see if there was anything that didn't get processed or completed from the day before.
I would then go to my office and complete the payroll from the previous 24 hours. 
I would then briefly talk with the Manager and report any problems or concerns from the day before. 
Then about 3 or 4 times a day I would walk through the plant and talk with all the employees and see if they had any concerns.
The hardest part of the job was when we would have an extended break down and have product left over we would have to make sure we caught up as the product does deteriorate as it gets old.
The most enjoyable part of the job was when I was able to show our hard working employees how much we appreciated the good job they did sometimes under pressure and if necessary when they had to stay overtime to finish off all the product especially on Saturdays.
Everyone would always chip in when we needed extra help because of issues. 
We had toolbox meetings every month where everyone had a chance to voice any concerns or ask to clarify any issues in the plant.

Management is inexperienced and disorganized, routinely pushing employees beyond reasonable limits while offering wages that fall below a livable standard. There is little to no recognition for hard work, and morale is consistently low due to a lack of leadership and accountability.

High-performing employees are often let go without just cause, while individuals who contribute to workplace drama and dysfunction are kept on—seemingly to avoid long-term severance costs. This creates a deeply unfair and toxic environment that stifles growth and fosters resentment.

The HR department is poorly structured and largely ineffective. Concerns are either ignored or brushed aside, and the culture of silence around internal issues is both damaging and deliberate. It’s hard to shake the impression that negative reviews like this one are swept under the rug to preserve the company’s public image.

This is not a healthy or sustainable place to build a career. Unless significant changes are made, I would strongly recommend seeking employment elsewhere.

Excellent company. You start your day with work orders on you tool box, as long as you put in a honest days work there's no problems. Everyone was really understanding and supportive when you need advice or a hand with something and Management would do their best to make sure you were comfortable and had what you needed. The only downside is the work floor environment itself, as the company deals with animal carcasses and byproducts the sights and smells of the place will put most people off, but if you can handle it then you could have a long successful career here. I tried to stick it out, but after a week it was getting to me :(

WCRL is a well-established, family owned and operated business. They are also a recession resistant company that is continually growing and has opportunity for advancement in many areas. The company has a strong track record of thoughtful attention to employees’ needs. A recent example being that they gifted every employee $300 in gas gift cards to compensate for rising gas prices. They also host a variety of employee events like lunches, picnics, golf tournaments etc. They have scholarship opportunities for employee family members and cover the cost of employees taking additional coursework. 

I started with west coast reduction in 2008 in the load out department and now am lead hand and do quality control of our finished goods in Calgary. I like the fact there is an open door policy  from supervisors all the way to the CEO, if you have a question or concerns they are eager to answer or to find a solution. monthly barbeques, company golf tournaments and Christmas parties are just a few of the perks. there is a real sense of comradery within the company and the employees are often joking and laughing with each other. I have worked for other companies and in other industries but never enjoyed a job more then I do here.

I worked here for several years and back than the management cared for you and paid you a good wage that matched those market conditions. Wages have gone up pennies throughout the years, but work load has doubled. You will lose your family as the bosses all see you as replaceable and demand you work overtime if it's up..that and the shift work that causeshavoc on not just your family life but your health too.

Smell was never bad..workload increasing, no thanks from the management or increase in pay. All reviews retaining to truck drivers saying they love the place is a lie and is written to boost reviews. 

New slogan should be employees left behind.

Pay well and they know it so management use this as an excuse to treat employees poorly. There are a lot of departments that seem like they are all competing with each other rather than being helpful. There is no oversight of management, the ownership lets the various department heads run everything and I don't know if they even really know what goes on at the plant. There is no HR on site either and most people have never even met an HR person. If you are a journeyman or have other options that pay well just avoid this job. Nothing but bitter and unappreciated workers here. 

I've been an employee here at WCRL for almost 2 years now. Everyone was so welcoming! The thing I love most about working here is that everyone is always willing to put their hand up when someone needs help. There is no "I" in team when working here. 

There are lots of opportunities for advancement and I am a perfect example of this. When you put your foot down and show everyone what you are cable of, management is always recognizing hard work and appreciative of it.

For anyone struggling to find your "forever" career, come to WCRL and be part of the best family on the West Coast!

I love working with these people.  WCRL is an incredibly responsible, considerate and generous company.  If you are fortunate enough to be offered a job here don't blow it.  Learn your job well.  Do your job to the best of your ability.  Don't be petty.  Don't whine or complain.  Follow the golden rule.  Be a team player.  Respect the people who you work with.  Be good to the equipment.  Be honest and upfront.  You will be seen and recognized for your contribution.
