I have worked at West-Can for 7 years now. Started as a flagger then became a labour and moved to equipment operator.

West-Can always encourages people to increase their skills sets and teaches you how to properly do your assigned task. This winter I got my class 3 so I can drive this upcoming season. West-Can supported my efforts to get my class 3. 

Overall, its a great place to work, it really is like a second family on the road. I would not recommend this job to someone who does not want to work long hours and be close to home. This job is for people who want to work hard and go on an adventure during the summer, seeing places you wouldn't otherwise see.

I enjoy the team effort everyone working together to get the job done and seeing the final paved road at the end of the day. 

The pay is great, but you need to work for it. Nothing is free

We took our luggages in our trucks. We kept moving from town to town like nomadic people. Class 1 drivers and labourers shared room. Each employee shared room with a total coworker stranger that they just met at work. Driving over 12 hrs a day and sharing the room with coworkers shouldn’t be legal in my opinion. Driving big trucks is an arduous work that requires great concentration and I question if Canadian transportation allows these companies to get away with this? I’m sure the government is not aware of this. Also, in my room, my coworker cooked in our room at the hotel. How could one sleep when your roommate in the hotel’s room cooks? Hotel rooms are not designed to be cooked inside.  Poor ventilation causes lack of sleep. The employer wouldn’t accommodate once asked for single room occupancy. What a memorable month experience?

Pay is alright considering the long hours you work. Sharing a room with someone for months can be okay if you have a good roommate. They do try there best to put you with someone you get along with. But after working a 16 hour day its hard to share a shower and toilet with someone else. They have some amazing foremans, or they are the absolute worst depending on what crew you get on. Dont expect anytime off, or for them to pay meal-allownance on days you arent working even if you are in the middle of nowhere and unable to go home. I would only work here again if it was my only option. The people you work with are easily the best part about the job if you get along with them. Lots of drama does happen on crews though and I've seen it become a nightmare for some people. 

Started with West-Can the summer of 2017 and still work with them every season.  I look forward to the season start up each year, connecting with friends that I've made along the way and getting back on the roads.  We see so many different towns, cities etc. that I wouldn't normally get to see.   If you work hard and play nice you get recognized with training opportunities, I moved my way up from a flagger to a supervisor position in a short period of time.  The reason I keep going back year after year is the people, we are all a family and look out for one another.

Management can do no wrong.They have one set of rules for them and another set for the workers. They look for anyway to cheat you out of hours and time off. They have the typical mindset of do as I say not as I do. If you want to be belittled by management then this is the place for you. Absolutely not communication from management to staff. It’s like pulling teeth to find out where your going and where your staying. Some days are early mornings and late evenings depending on what your doing. This year the hours aren’t good and the money sucks.
I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Do not work here unless you're sinking in debt.  They are unwilling to train you, you either pick it up or get pushed out quickly.  They don't give you adequate time to get food, you work 15+ hours a day, 7 days a week, only having time off when it's raining.  If you don't have time to go buy food, then you go without.  There were multiple times that water wasn't even available.  If you are a hard worker, you are not rewarded, you are pushed harder to make up for the others.  If you have your class 1, you do nothing, but class 3, you are treated like a laborer.  Do not work here unless you are absolutely desperate, you will regret it

I've worked with West-Can for nearly 8 years now, the office staff are helpful and the crews have always been great in my experience. Working at WCS is a fast paced environment with lots of hours. If you are looking for a summer vacation, I wouldn't recommend working here or for any seasonal construction company for the matter. If you are looking for an adventure, with lots of hours and are open to working anywhere between Manitoba and B.C ,  I recommend working here. The owners are friendly and are always willing to work alongside you.

Company account for all your time company is willing to help you improve and make changes to the work you can do very good job and people that stay though the session

Long hours but definitely worth it

Long hard work but more then worth it

The people you meet. The places you get to work.
And their willingness to advance You in the company.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The only part that is stressful is if you are working away from home for 5 months..

Awesome if you get on the right crew

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Wake up, go to work about 12 to 14 hour day. Go back to the hotel sleep do it all over again

- Supervise flagging staff
- Set up construction zone to avoid any mishaps
- Record hours, incidents, sign locations, and FLHA

I have learned independence and patience.
The hardest part of the job is day 44 in a row working 14-16 hour days in the grueling sun.
The most enjoyable part of my job was knowing I was serving a huge purpose to the company and knowing without myself, and other flaggers, production could not occur.
