Young Guns Container crew

Multiple times I would be headed to work, only to be called and told to go to a different location, or to go home for the day. The work was measured each day, so they would call in who they needed, which turned out to be who they wanted: if you weren't as fast, you get less chance to be called. That, mixed with their idea that the faster you work the more you get paid per hour (as piecework),  just made it so that the supervisors hustle you beyond safety. There are no expected techniques, supportive equipment like weight belts, and cleaning up of hazards comes last--you just need to move fast as possible. I thought things would be different when I joined the coffee bag side of things, but it actually got worse. The weight was so heavy day after day, moving 75kg+ bags of coffee every 10-15 minutes, that I soon got a hernia. Before that I came on to a shift where the supervisor said "We are going to do something risky today: if you don't want to get paid, go home now. If you want to you are welcome to stay." They then proceeded to lift something like a scissor lift platform with a four-cliff machine, and asked two people to dump a large hanging container of coffee overhead into a funnel. They pay per week was terrible: less shifts than part time, less pay than 14/hr.  They could always blame the team's speed because it was piece-work, regardless who showed up, instead of having solid standards and expectations.  All around worse job I have ever had.

Working with young guns is a very physical job where pay often times does not reflect the work put in. They use a productivity based pay system rather than an hourly which is ineffective as those who aren’t on a managers salary will make very poor money some days for very tough work put in.

Days and hours worked are extremely inconsistent, they use an app to plan the working schedule for the week and many times you get notified as late as 10pm the night before if your working or not. As someone who had been working with them for 1.5 years this was unacceptable. There isn’t much in the way of career progression as nepotism is unfortunately present. Some managers will take criticism personally and not react professionally and in fact offer less shifts to workers as a result.

This isn’t a bad job to start off on as there are plenty of good lads working there and it can be an opportunity to meet people if moving to Canada on a working holiday. Although this is by no means suitable long term as there is a large turnover rate.

For the most part this is an amazing job, you get paid based on how much work you do, which is the only reason I rated the pay as I did, some crew members push you harder than you can physically handle and expect you to be fine with it. Some people are just using it as inbetween job while they look for their next job so they can stay afloat, some are working there because you can make a lot of money, paid out weekly, if youre able to push yourself. Depending on the type of person you are you could get paired with the wrong crew just based on your physical capabilities. The worst part is only really during the hot season, you're working in metal shipping containers, emptying the incoming, and packing the outgoing, the heat can become unbearable when you're doing that for 8 hours a day

Working with young guns was fun, lively. The work ethics were good, the people were good. Depending on the sites you were sent to work was sometimes smooth and enjoyable and other times it was hard and sometimes chaotic. But the company took care of their own that is if you show them that you are serious working and ready to grow with the company they are willing to help you grow. That is and was what i loved about the company.

They have a unreliable work schedule. They call people names and vote people out during the meetings (workers are included in the meetings)  to see who gets to get more hours (or even gets to go to work that week) on the job. If you’re new you won’t get to participate in the voting only workers who have been there for a while gets invited to the meetings and food parties. I have been in these meetings and food parties plenty of times and I dislike how they speak/treat others but I need the job.

The most outstanding leadership within a business I have experienced.

Hard work is rewarded and opportunities are created in line with the businesses growth.

The hardest part is time management when overseeing a large workforce.

The most enjoyable aspect of the role is having a hand in the success of the business.

This is one of the worst jobs I have ever worked at. Scheduling is terrible you get a text from the manager a day before you work and if you don't get a text you have to text the manager to find out if you are working or not. Constantly being put on standby for no reason. Get told excuses saying not enough work for me. Yet they continue hiring more people.

-Astonishingly high turnover; some can't handle the hard work, some are looking for transient work while backpacking.

Direct leaders have no experience in the industry. poor management skills align with a lack of capacity to coach workers.

Huge turnover. 
The company system is easy to manipulate, and inserted data is not trustworthy. 

A great entry level job for anybody who enjoys working in a competitive team environment that incentivises productivity and hard work. The volume of work does fluctuate from day to day depending on the requirements of individual customers and the variability of the shipping logistics industry.
