Job Purpose:
The international Imports & Exports Supervisor is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of our international freight department while developing a high-performing team that consistently delivers world-class service to our customers and global partners.
This is a hands-on leadership role that balances operational execution with continuous improvement. The successful candidate will oversee international air, ocean, ground, and rail freight operations, ensuring shipments move efficiently from origin to destination while maintaining compliance, profitability, and an exceptional customer experience.
Working closely with our customers, overseas agents, carriers, vendors, customs partners, sales, and internal departments, this role is responsible for building strong relationships, improving operational processes, developing team capability, and driving business performance. Success in this position requires someone who enjoys solving problems, leading people, improving processes, and taking ownership of results while contributing to the continued growth of the organization.
Duties & Responsibilities:

People & Leadership:

The day-to-day activities of the international imports and exports team across all transportation modes including air, ocean, ground, and rail

Plan, prioritize, and delegate workloads to ensure service commitments, productivity targets, and customer expectations are consistently achieved

Coach, mentor, motivate, and develop team members through ongoing feedback, training, cross-training, and performance development

Build team capability by ensuring adequate cross-training and succession across key functions

Recruit, onboard, train, and integrate new employees as required

Conduct performance reviews, establish development plans, and provide regular coaching and constructive feedback

Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous learning, and operational excellence

Support the implementation of organizational initiatives and effectively lead the team through change

Enforce company policies, procedures, and operational standards

Assist in resolving employee concerns, conflicts, and escalated issues in partnership with management

Ensure appropriate staffing coverage and effective allocation of departmental resources
Process & Operations:
-
Oversee Complete life cycle of international shipments from quotation through final delivery, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and world class customer service

Coordinate import and export shipments including booking, documentation, customs clearance, tracking, delivery, invoicing, and issue resolution

Prepare and provide competitive freight quotations for commercial customers, overseas offices, and international agents

Arrange transportation services and provide routing guidance to customers and team members

Monitor shipment activity using transportation management systems (TMS) and track and trace tools to proactively identify and resolve issues

Develop, maintain, and continuously improve standard operating procedures (SOPs), workflows, and best practices based on customer requirements and operational needs

Identify opportunities to improve operational processes, service consistency, efficiency, accuracy, automation, and system utilization

Become departmental subject matter expert for the transportation management system (TMS), driving adoption and continuous improvement

Manage departmental inboxes and ensure timely communication with customers, international agents, carriers, customs brokers, and internal stakeholders

Collaborate with customer solutions, sales, and management, to successfully onboard new customers and business opportunities

Review and process shipment billing, ensuring timely invoicing, accurate charges, and prompt resolution of billing discrepancies

Monitor carrier invoices and payables to ensure timely processing And adherence to contractual agreements

Maintain compliance with domestic and international shipping regulations customs requirements, and company operating procedures

Deliver an exceptional customer experience by ensuring timely communication, proactive problem resolution, and consistent service excellence

Develop and maintain strong working relationships with customers, carriers, vendors, suppliers, and internal departments

Negotiate carrier pricing, transportation capacity, and service agreements while maintaining strong vendor relationships

Monitor vendor performance, service levels, and freight costs, recommending improvements where appropriate

Participate in establishing departmental KPI's and performance objectives while monitoring results and driving continuous improvement

Review operational metrics and team productivity to identify trends risks and opportunities for improvement

Identify operational risks and implement corrective and preventative actions (CAPA) to reduce errors, claims, and service failures

Professional & Educational Background:
-
10+ years in transportation or freight forwarding experience required
-
Post Secondary education in Supply Chain Management considered an asset
-
Knowledgeable in CargoWise or SoluShip considered an asset
-
Experience working with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and EDI Systems
-
Strong knowledge of Canada & USA Customs cross border practices & procedures
-
General knowledge of container port operations, rail line operations and airline cargo terminal operations considered and asset

Certified and knowledgeable in Transportation of Dangerous Goods (Air, Sea, Ground) considered an asset
