Given the dynamic and collaborative nature of our school environment, this role is an on-site position required to be in the office five days a week. Candidates should be prepared to contribute actively to this in-person, community-focused environment.
JOB PURPOSE
Join The York School's collaborative Finance team and help strengthen the financial operations that support our school community. Reporting to the Director, Finance, the Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the School's accounting operations through financial reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, tax compliance, and audit preparation. The role serves as a senior technical accounting resource within the Finance team while providing operational support across Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable during peak periods. Working collaboratively across the School, the Senior Accountant contributes to accurate financial reporting, continuous process improvement, and the long-term financial sustainability of The York School.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare monthly account reconciliations, financial analyses, and month-end working papers to support accurate financial reporting
Prepare and distribute monthly budget reports, investigate variances, and support department budget managers
Support the Director, Finance with the annual budget process, financial reporting, and other strategic finance initiatives
Prepare quarterly HST rebate filings, annual student tax receipts, charitable filings, and other required regulatory reporting
Support the annual external audit by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation
Oversee the integration and reconciliation of Financial Edge, Raiser's Edge, York Shop, and Cafeteria financial activity
Review vendor invoices, coding, approvals, and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance
Serve as the senior accounting resource across the Finance department, providing operational support to the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions during vacations, absences, and peak periods
Support the Accounts Receivable Coordinator and Admissions team during annual student re-enrolment and assist in resolving complex billing, payment, and reconciliation matters
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, financial systems, internal controls, and workflow efficiencies
Maintain accounting procedures and cross-training documentation to support business continuity
Stay current with accounting standards, financial technology, and industry best practices
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
CPA designation or actively working toward CPA designation
Minimum five years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a not-for-profit, educational, or similarly complex organization
Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting practices
Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, budgeting, financial analysis, and audit preparation
Knowledge of HST regulations, charitable reporting requirements, and Canadian tax compliance
Experience with Financial Edge, Raiser's Edge, or comparable enterprise financial systems considered an asset
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong overall technology skills; experience with Google Workspace considered an asset
Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments while delivering responsive, service-oriented support
Demonstrates professionalism, sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality

WORKING REQUIREMENTS
WHAT WE OFFER
The target hiring range for this position is $85,000 to $105,000 annually. Placement within the range is determined by job-related skills, experience and education.
