As the successful applicant, you will do the following:
- Perform core laboratory testing across Hematology, Chemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Limited Microbiology and Specimen Procurement/Processing.
- Receive, assess, process, and prioritize specimens, ensuring accurate patient identification, specimen integrity, and appropriate test order verification.
- Operate, maintain and calibrate laboratory analyzers and equipment in accordance with established procedures and manufacturer requirements. Recognizes, troubleshoots and communicates equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiates appropriate remedial action in a timely manner.
- Perform quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing activities; identify trends or issues and initiate appropriate corrective action.
- Interpret, verify, and report laboratory results accurately and in a timely manner, including recognizing and communicating critical values according to policy.
- Support safe transfusion practices by performing blood bank testing, issuing blood products, and following established transfusion medicine procedures.
- Collect blood specimens when required, including venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, while maintaining patient safety, comfort, and confidentiality. Procures and labels laboratory specimens in accordance with established protocols.
- Document testing, maintenance, quality activities, incidents, and corrective actions clearly and accurately in the appropriate systems.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, laboratory colleagues, and other healthcare professionals by sharing relevant information, clarifying test requirements, communicating critical and urgent results, supporting interdisciplinary problem-solving, and contributing to coordinated, timely, high-quality patient care.
- Support laboratory inventory management by monitoring supplies, reagents, and blood products; identifying shortages and communicating supply needs, including liaising with Canadian Blood Services as required to manage blood product inventory and support uninterrupted laboratory operations.
- Follow Accreditation Canada requirements, applicable legislation, professional standards, and organizational policies to support safe, high-quality, and compliant laboratory services.
- Organizes their time to collect, assay and report patient results in a timely manner and produces quality results while meeting defined turn around times.
- Acts as a point of reference and resource for Medical Laboratory Assistants.
- Participates in Quality Assurance activities.
What You’ll Bring
Required
- MLT with CSMLS Certification and registration with CMLTO. Please note: We will also consider MLT students and new graduates actively pursuing CSMLS certification.
- Licensed to practice in the areas of Hematology, Chemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Specimen Procurement/Processing, and Limited Microbiology.
Preferred
- Previous experience in a hospital-based core laboratory environment
- Experience with Quality Management Systems
- Experience with Meditech Expanse
- Phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while managing competing priorities and turnaround times.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with physicians, nurses, laboratory colleagues, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Ability to adapt to changing workflows, new technology, process improvements, and future laboratory service needs.
