The Health and Safety Advisor provides guidance and support on workplace health and safety matters across KTLP operations. This role develops and improves safety programs, monitors regulatory compliance, conducts inspections and risk assessments, leads incident investigations, and delivers safety training. Working collaboratively with employees, leadership, and partner organizations, the Advisor promotes a proactive and safe workplace culture across the organization.
Primary Duties
- Provide health and safety guidance and recommendations to employees, supervisors, and leadership,
- Develop, implement, review, and update health and safety programs, policies, procedures, and safe work practices,
- Monitor compliance with applicable occupational health and safety legislation, WorkSafeBC requirements, and organizational standards,
- Conduct workplace inspections, hazard assessments, risk evaluations, and safety audits across offices and operational work sites,
- Identify health and safety risks and recommend appropriate corrective and preventative measures,
- Lead workplace incident and near-miss investigations, including documentation, root-cause analysis, and corrective action follow-up,
- Develop and deliver health and safety orientations, training sessions, presentations, and awareness initiatives,
- Inspect work practices, equipment, tools, and work environments to identify unsafe conditions,
- Track and report on incidents, hazards, inspections, corrective actions, and health and safety performance,
- Coordinate Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings, inspections, recommendations, and required documentation,
- Collaborate with internal departments, affiliated companies, contractors, and external partners to promote consistent health and safety practices,
- Maintain accurate health and safety records, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, WorkSafeBC requirements, and recognized safety practices,
- Knowledge of hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation, and corrective action processes,
- Ability to interpret legislation, policies, and standards and provide clear, practical guidance,
- Ability to develop health and safety policies, procedures, training materials, and reports,
- Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills,
- Ability to build effective working relationships with employees, leadership, contractors, and external partners,
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint applications, and
- Willingness to learn or knowledge of beginner nłeʔkepmxcín, nłeʔkepmx cultural values and protocols while recognizing and respecting cultural diversity.
Experience and Requirements
- Post-secondary education in occupational health and safety, or a related discipline is preferred,
- 2-3 years of relevant occupational health and safety experience,
- Experience developing safety policies, procedures, reports, and training materials,
- Experience conducting workplace inspections, hazard assessments, and incident investigations,
- Valid Standing First Aid Certificate, and
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable personal vehicle.
Work Environment
- Schedule: Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 4:30pm, with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break, fluctuating when needed. On average, 35 hours per week,
- Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x,
- Primary Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the K’en T’em office at 1355 Nicola Ave, Merritt, BC,
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
