A forklift operator is responsible for safely moving, loading, unloading, and storing materials using a forklift or other powered industrial trucks. Typical duties include:
- Operate forklifts safely to transport materials throughout warehouses, factories, construction sites, or distribution centers.
- Load and unload trucks, trailers, and shipping containers.
- Stack, store, and retrieve pallets and materials from racks or storage areas.
- Inspect forklifts before each shift and report any mechanical issues or safety concerns.
- Perform basic maintenance, such as checking fluid levels, battery charge, and tire condition.
- Follow workplace safety procedures and comply with forklift operating regulations.
- Read work orders, shipping documents, and inventory labels to move the correct items.
- Assist with inventory management by counting, recording, and tracking stock.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the warehouse and storage areas by sweeping floors, removing debris, disposing of waste, and ensuring aisles and workspaces remain clean, safe, and free of obstructions.
- Keep work areas clean and free of hazards.
- Secure loads to prevent damage during transport.
- Communicate with supervisors, warehouse staff, and truck drivers to coordinate material movement.
- Ensure products are handled carefully to minimize damage.
- Use scanners or warehouse management systems to record inventory movements, when required.
- Assist with general warehouse duties, including packing, sorting, labeling, and organizing materials as needed.
Common Requirements:
- Valid forklift operator certification or license (where required by law or employer)
- High school diploma or equivalent (often preferred)
- Experience operating forklifts in warehouse or industrial environments
- Ability to work standing for long periods and lift up to employer-specified weight limits
- Understanding of occupational health and safety regulations.
