Job Overview
The Field Maintenance Foreman is responsible for leading and coordinating field maintenance activities to ensure heavy equipment is repaired, maintained, and returned to service safely and efficiently. This position supervises field service technicians, schedules repair activities, provides technical expertise, and works closely with operations to minimize equipment downtime while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision:
- Supervise, mentor, and support field maintenance technicians and apprentices.
- Assign and prioritize field repair work based on operational needs and equipment availability.
- Monitor technician performance, productivity, and workmanship.
- Conduct daily safety meetings and communicate work assignments and expectations.
- Participate in hiring, training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
Maintenance & Repairs:
- Coordinate and oversee field repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections, and emergency breakdown response.
- Provide technical assistance for diagnosing complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic equipment issues.
- Ensure repairs are completed correctly, safely, and within established timelines.
- Perform field inspections to verify repair quality and equipment readiness.
- Assist with major repairs when necessary.
Planning & Coordination:
- Work closely with Operations, Dispatch, Shop Personnel, and Parts Department to schedule maintenance activities with minimal impact to production.
- Coordinate the availability of tools, service trucks, parts, and specialized equipment required for field repairs.
- Monitor equipment downtime and identify opportunities to improve reliability and maintenance efficiency.
- Support equipment commissioning, relocation, and seasonal maintenance programs.
Safety & Compliance:
- Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with company policies, client requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Conduct job hazard assessments before field work begins.
- Ensure technicians properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, and safe work practices.
- Report and investigate incidents, near misses, and equipment failures.
- Maintain compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.
Administration:
- Review and approve work orders, inspection reports, service documentation, and technician time records.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records using the company's maintenance management system.
- Assist in developing maintenance schedules and equipment lifecycle planning.
- Monitor field maintenance costs and recommend improvements to increase efficiency and reduce downtime.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5–7 years of heavy equipment maintenance experience.
- Minimum 2–3 years of supervisory or leadership experience in field maintenance operations.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, powertrain systems, electrical systems, air systems, and diagnostic software.
- Experience maintaining construction, mining, forestry, or industrial heavy equipment.
- Valid driver's license; commercial driver's license is considered an asset.

Working Conditions:
- Primarily works in the field at construction sites, industrial facilities, or remote locations.
- Regular exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, noise, dust, vibration, and heavy equipment operations.
- Frequent travel between job sites.
- Requires standing, walking, climbing, lifting, kneeling, and working around operating heavy equipment.
- May require overtime, weekend work, and on-call availability to support operational needs.
Reporting Relationship:
Reports to: Equipment Manager / Fleet Manager
Supervises: Field Service Technicians, Apprentices, Lube Technicians, and assigned maintenance personnel.
