About the Client & Opportunity

Representing a flagship enterprise within a North American transportation franchise network with over 400 locations, our client provides commercial transport and fleet solutions. They operate a fast-paced accounting environment across regional operations.

Role Summary

Working with executive finance leadership, the Accounting Manager will serve as the primary operational review checkpoint for the organization’s corporate finance function during an 18-month maternity leave contract. This position is responsible for ensuring financial statement compliance, data accuracy, and internal controls across divisional workflows.

A key requirement of this role is the review, formalization, and enforcement of accounting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). While operating as an individual contributor during the initial term, this position requires leadership capability.

Key Responsibilities

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) & Internal Controls

Partner across dealership departments and personnel to review, formalize, and document accounting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Lead the evaluation and refinement of operational accounting workflows to support audit readiness, internal controls, and compliance.
Apply public practice/audit methodologies to evaluate internal controls across financial processes.

Financial Statement Review & Month-End Execution

Review divisional financial statements compiled by the accounting team for compliance, logical consistency, and accuracy.
Conduct monthly reviews of management reporting packages prior to executive submission.
Prepare and post month-end general journal entries, accruals, and transactional adjustments.
Perform month-end payroll accruals for non-posted pay periods and reconcile payroll deduction balance sheet accounts.

Balance Sheet Reconciliations & Due Diligence

Prepare balance sheet reconciliations, including core inventory, intercompany AR, payroll deductions, and assigned sub-ledger accounts.
Perform monthly reviews and approvals of balance sheet reconciliations prepared by intermediate and junior accountants.
Partner with credit leadership to exercise accounting due diligence over aging receivables and determine Allowance for Doubtful Accounts (AFDA) provisions and write-offs.
Reconcile Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) payments, ensuring appropriate freight and duty allocations to sub-ledgers.

Variance Analysis & Cost Control

Review month-over-month, year-over-year, and historical average variance analyses compiled by the accounting team across expenses and gross margins.
Investigate ledger anomalies or unexpected trends, identifying root causes prior to finalizing financial reports.
Review inventory adjustments to verify reasonability and prevent unauthorized write-offs.

Qualifications & Experience

Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is mandatory.
Leadership experience or demonstrated leadership capability is required. Candidates must possess the interpersonal maturity to guide team members in potential future state realignments.
Prior audit experience originating from a public practice accounting firm (or equivalent internal controls/audit experience) is required to support SOP documentation and compliance testing.
2+ yearsof corporate industry experience, preferably within transportation, logistics, multi-branch commercial operations, or franchise dealership networks.
Understanding of accounting treatments for operating and capital leases.
Familiarity with inventory tracking mechanisms (including core parts) and sub-ledger to general ledger reconciliations.
Proficiency withERP platformsand Microsoft Excel.
Ability to communicate and build rapport with diverse personalities across all dealership departments to successfully compile SOPs.
Approachable, customer-centric mindset with the situational awareness to assist clients or team members on site as needed.
Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and a collaborative work style.

Compensation, Benefits & Term

18-Month Maternity Leave Contract with an early onboarding window for knowledge transfer.
Work Structure: On-site full-time position.
Base Salary: $110K to $130K, commensurate with experience.
Retention Bonus Opportunity: Possibility of a completion/retention bonus structure, evaluated and exercised at management's discretion based on candidate profile and project milestones.
Vacation: 2+ weeks of paid annual vacation (pro-rated over the contract duration).
