What is the Opportunity?
As part of a major payment modernization initiative, Royal Bank of Canada is seeking a hands-on Senior Manager to lead a team of backend developers while actively contributing to code development for our next-generation payment engine. In this dual-role position (50% people leadership, 50% hands-on development), you will manage and mentor your team while personally designing and building critical components of a robust, scalable, and resilient backend system. You will code alongside your team, creating high-performance, event-driven microservices using Java and Spring Boot, while developing talent and driving team performance to shape the future of our core payment processing capabilities.
What You'll Do
Manage a team of backend developers while actively contributing hands-on to development work, providing coaching, performance management, and career development
Provide expert technical leadership through both code contributions and mentorship, working hands-on with the team on complex technical challenges
Balance people management responsibilities with active development work, collaborating with business stakeholders to translate strategic objectives into technical solutions
Lead by example through hands-on coding while facilitating cross-functional collaboration and building a high-performing team culture
Maintain strong hands-on coding skills and contribute to production codebase regularly
What You Need to Succeed?
Must Have:
5-7+ years of backend development experience
Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot framework
Deep understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems
Practical experience with reactive and event-based programming
Proficiency with RESTful API design, Git, and CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins)
Strong experience with automated testing (e.g., JUnit, Mockito)
Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies
Nice-to-Have:
2-4+ years of people management experience leading technical teams (3-8 developers)
Experience with messaging systems like IBM MQ or Apache Kafka
Knowledge of microservice resiliency patterns (circuit breakers, back pressure)
Familiarity of Spec-Kit
Familiarity with Docker, containerization (Kubernetes/OpenShift), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Splunk, Dynatrace, ELK stack)
Knowledge of the banking or financial services domain, especially payment systems
