POSITION SUMMARY
The Service Manager is a full-time, on-site position based in Toronto, Ontario, accountable for the establishment and leadership of RackAir's commercial service operation in the Greater Toronto Area. This is a foundational appointment: the successful candidate will define the service department's technical standards, assemble its technician complement, establish dispatch and scheduling discipline, and manage its margin structure from inception.
The position carries full operational and commercial accountability for service delivery and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Service Delivery and Technical Standards
Establish and enforce the technical standard governing all service, diagnostic, and commissioning work. Maintain accountability for scope discipline, work documentation, first-time-fix performance, and callback rate.
Workforce Development and Leadership
Recruit, onboard, develop, and retain the field technician complement. Provide day-to-day supervision, performance management, and technical coaching, including apprentice development and journeyperson retention.
Commercial Performance
Manage service revenue, gross margin by work type, labour utilization, work-in-progress, unbilled aging, and vehicle and inventory cost. Operate against an approved monthly plan and report variance with supporting detail.
Preventive Maintenance Program Execution
Own delivery of RackAir Complete™ preventive maintenance agreements, including asset register accuracy, schedule adherence, deficiency identification and reporting, and contract renewal.
Client Relationship Management
Serve as the senior operational point of contact for property and facility management stakeholders. Coordinate communication between office, field, and client personnel, ensuring accurate reporting and timely escalation of service issues.
Compliance, Safety, and Regulatory Administration
Administer all work performed under RackAir's TSSA contractor licence (0076409176), including refrigerant handling and reporting obligations, working-at-heights and confined space requirements, and field health and safety program compliance.
Operational Infrastructure
Implement and maintain service management systems, scheduling workflow, supplier and subcontractor arrangements, and process improvement initiatives supporting the operation's scalability.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required;
- Minimum ten (10) years of progressive experience in commercial HVAC/R or mechanical service, including substantive field experience prior to assuming management responsibility.
- Demonstrated profit and loss, branch, or departmental financial accountability, with proven capability to interpret operational data, monitor key performance indicators, and manage to an established plan.
- Proven experience leading and developing field technicians, including recruitment, performance management, and technical coaching.
- Technical depth in refrigeration and mechanical systems, including rack systems, chillers, or process cooling in addition to rooftop and packaged equipment.
- Demonstrated competence in operations management, including scheduling, resource planning, and workflow optimization within a service-based environment.
- Effective client relationship management capability, including structured reporting, documentation practice, and issue resolution.
Certification- One or More of the Following
- 313A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic
- G1 or G2 Gas Technician
- Refrigeration Service Engineer (RSE)
- Building Environmental Systems certification or equivalent building operations credential
Preferred
- Experience leading field personnel within a unionized environment.
- Working proficiency with service management software (BuildOps or comparable platform).
- Post-secondary education in business, operations, engineering, or facilities management. Equivalent trade and operating experience will be given equal consideration.
- Prior experience in commercial property services, mechanical service contracting, or building automation integration.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
RackAir is seeking an established operator with demonstrated entrepreneurial capability a candidate who has managed a branch, department, or independent mechanical contracting business and is seeking greater scope, direct influence over operational standards, and a personal stake in the outcome.
The initial eighteen months of this appointment involve establishing processes, personnel, and client relationships that do not presently exist. Candidates requiring an established operational framework are unlikely to be successful in this role.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$120,000.00-$160,00.00 Base salary, performance-based compensation tied to service department gross margin and contract growth, company vehicle, and a comprehensive benefits program. Compensation structure is negotiable for candidates demonstrating substantive operating capability.
