Company Overview
Hoot Reading is a leading online tutoring provider delivering 1:1, evidence-based literacy instruction through a network of qualified teachers. Hoot partners with K–12 school districts, educational organizations, state-funded tutoring initiatives, and families across North America to deliver high-impact tutoring and intervention programs that help transform children's lives through literacy.
Overview
We are seeking a passionate educator, with deep experience in literacy instruction, to play a hands-on role in supporting our teacher tutors to deliver high-quality, evidence-based reading and language instruction to students across the U.S. and Canada. This role will work to ensure students are receiving excellent instruction, tailored to their unique learning needs and goals in order to realize Hoot's mission to transform children's lives through literacy. The ideal candidate has direct teaching or tutoring experience, as well as experience in coaching and leading professional development.
Key Responsibilities
Literacy Instruction & Subject Matter Expertise
- Serve as a subject matter expert in literacy instruction, speaking to Hoot Reading pedagogy, Structured Literacy, and the Science of Reading with internal teams, with occasional opportunities to engage external stakeholders.
- Observe tutoring lessons to provide feedback, answer questions, and guide teachers based on evidence-based practices and assessed/observed student needs.
- Design and lead instructional coaching sessions responsive to teacher and student needs, growing teacher practice and improving student learning outcomes.
- Develop and deliver professional development sessions internally to a diverse network of experienced teachers.
Teacher Coaching & Program Operations
- Communicate lesson feedback to teachers via email, as well as live, remote 1:1 and group coaching sessions.
- Create slide decks and training materials grounded in literacy subject matter expertise to train and coach teachers effectively.
- Score teacher performance and build forms/templates that capture and track teacher quality over time.
- Support teacher recruitment, including screening tasks and interviews.
- Ensure consistency and continuous improvement across the teacher network.
The ideal candidate has:
- Subject matter expertise in reading instruction — you speak skillfully and passionately about phonemic awareness, r-controlled vowels, prosody, and vocabulary, and you're a self-motivated learner who stays current on evidence-based literacy research.
- 3–5 years of experience providing Structured Literacy instruction, particularly for K-2 or remediating foundational reading skills (e.g., phonics) with older students — classroom or intervention setting.
- 1–3 years of experience providing instructional feedback to professional educators.
- Proven ability to create and deliver professional development/training to a diverse audience of educators, virtually and in-person.
- Experience with performance evaluation systems — building rubrics, scorecards, or templates to assess and track quality.
- Comfort supporting recruitment/hiring processes, including candidate screening and interviewing.
- Tech-savvy — able to learn new tools quickly and troubleshoot effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to coach teachers 1:1 and in groups with empathy and clarity.
- Highly organized, with the ability to manage recurring operational processes (scoring, reporting, recruitment pipelines) alongside instructional work.
