Overview of role
The Senior Data Platform Analyst, reporting to the Manager, Data Platforms, is a senior technical resource responsible for supporting, optimizing, governing, and evolving WestJet’s enterprise data platforms.
This role provides senior-level platform oversight across key technologies including Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake, Tableau, Alteryx, Dagster, Azure integrations, and emerging AI enablement capabilities.
This is a platform-focused role, not a traditional developer-only role. The Senior Data Platform Analyst is expected to understand how data platforms are used across the organization, identify risks and optimization opportunities, guide teams toward scalable solution patterns, and help ensure platforms are stable, cost effective, governed, and ready to support future business needs.
A key focus of this role is proactive Power BI and Fabric capacity management, including monitoring usage trends, identifying high-impact datasets and reports, supporting optimization efforts, and helping avoid unnecessary capacity spend. The role will also support Snowflake platform enablement, including AI use cases, governance, guardrails, cost controls, monitoring, and safe adoption patterns.
The Senior Data Platform Analyst will contribute to the Data Platforms roadmap by assessing new capabilities, supporting proof of concepts, enabling safe rollout of platform features, and building reusable standards, documentation, and enablement material through the Data Platforms Center of Excellence.
This role also requires strong communication, presentation, and mentoring skills. The Senior Data Platform Analyst will be expected to explain technical concepts clearly, present recommendations and proof-of-concept outcomes, mentor analysts, and help business users adopt platform capabilities through guidance, documentation, training, and knowledge sharing.
Key deliverables include
- Provide senior-level support and oversight for enterprise data platforms, including Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake, Tableau, Alteryx, Dagster, Azure integrations, and related technologies.
- Proactively monitor and optimize Power BI and Fabric capacity usage, including semantic models, datasets, refresh patterns, report performance, workload trends, and high-impact usage patterns.
- Identify and support cost avoidance opportunities by optimizing existing platform usage before recommending additional capacity, licensing, or infrastructure spend.
- Support Power BI and Fabric governance, including workspace structure, deployment patterns, lineage visibility, usage monitoring, access patterns, and platform standards.
- Support proof of concepts and assessments for new platform capabilities such as Fabric, Copilot, Power BI Git integration, Dataflow Gen2, deployment pipelines, and other roadmap items.
- Support Snowflake AI enablement by helping define safe usage patterns, platform guardrails, monitoring, cost controls, and governance practices for AI and GenAI use cases.
- Provide guidance to business units and delivery teams on data platform requirements, solution design, scalability, performance, supportability, and appropriate platform selection.
- Establish and maintain Center of Excellence documentation, including platform standards, best practices, onboarding materials, runbooks, reusable patterns, training content, and user enablement guidance.
- Present platform recommendations, proof-of-concept outcomes, best practices, demos, and enablement sessions to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Mentor analysts and support business users by teaching platform concepts, reviewing solution approaches, and helping teams adopt standards and best practices.
- Develop dashboards and reporting assets for platform observability, governance, capacity management, usage analysis, audit support, and operational insights.
- Support rollout and adoption of Dagster and other orchestration capabilities, ensuring solutions are implemented safely and consistently.
- Configure and support integrations across multiple data platforms, including connectivity, automation, orchestration, and operational monitoring.
- Recommend and execute platform optimizations, process improvements, automation opportunities, and governance enhancements across the Data Platforms portfolio.
- Lead or support incident, change, release, and problem management activities for supported platforms and services.
- Troubleshoot complex platform issues, including report performance, refresh failures, capacity spikes, access issues, platform configuration, and cross-platform integration challenges.
- Document resolution steps, maintain support runbooks, contribute to knowledge management, and support transition of repeatable operational activities to managed service providers where appropriate.
- Support platform security posture, including access management, governance controls, audit participation, monitoring, and remediation activities.
