Reporting to the Information Technology (IT) Applications Manager, the Senior Web Applications Developer is responsible for providing support, maintenance, and developing enhancements for the university’s Online Services and Student Information System (SIS) including integration with internal and external software and services.
The Senior Web Applications Developer will work closely with the rest of the IT Services team to help resolve issues in a timely manner, escalate troubleshooting issues appropriately and communicate effectively with internal and external clients.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, maintain, and support in-house web applications using PHP, Python, and SQL.
- Troubleshoot and respond to production/testing issues.
- Troubleshoot and debug issues to optimize website functionality.
- Perform technical research and requirements analysis to design and implement new functionality for web applications.
- Perform testing of web applications.
- Write systems-level documentation on web applications.
- Assess and recommend web authoring, development, and publishing tools as required.
- Find, diagnose, and fix web application problems.
- Review business requirements and recommend appropriate system changes/design features supporting the end-users.
- Second tier helpdesk support focused on web applications.
- Integrate various 3rd-party applications and APIs to streamline institutional workflows.
- Track and evaluate new standards, technologies, and trends in web development, design, and delivery.
- Act as a mentor to other developers on the team.
- Support the IT Applications Manager in conducting weekly team meetings to help with team collaboration.
- Communicate/collaborate with clients, working with the IT Applications Manager as a first point of contact on upcoming work.
- Implement best practices in coding, security, and scalability.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Technical Diploma or Degree in Computing Science or related discipline is required.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in web development and maintenance is preferred.
- Ability to pass a clear criminal record check is required.
- Valid class 5 drivers licenses is an asset.
- Senior level proficiency is required in:
o MVC Frameworks (Code-Igniter)
o SQL
o Testing, debugging, and maintenance
o Analysis of operational business processes
o Git
o Linux
o Python
o PHP
- Working knowledge of the following is preferred:
o Database architecture and design
o Jira and Confluence
o Scrum
o AI-assisted coding tools (e.g. Cursor, Antigravity)
