Senior Accountant

Comp: $90,000 - $100,0000 annual salary, cash bonus, paid vacation and employee benefits.

With the recent acquisitions and continued expansion across our group, we are currently looking for a Controller / Director of Finance who is both a technically sharp CPA and a veteran of complex consolidations.

Your Role

This is a highly demanding role and we are looking for a high output professional who can balance speed with precision. As a Senior Accountant, you will report to the Controller and will own the full-cycle accounting and month-end close process and serve as a key contributor to our external financial reporting and compliance obligations. This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable preparing complex reconciliations and explaining results to senior leadership. You will work closely with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Operations, and our external auditors, and will have visible opportunity to improve processes and controls as the business grows.

Key Responsibilities

Full-Cycle Accounting & Month-End Close

Own the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close process, ensuring an accurate and timely close within established deadlines.
Prepare and post journal entries including accruals, prepaid expenses, deferrals, amortization, payroll, and intercompany transactions.
Perform and review balance sheet account reconciliations, including bank, credit card, inventory, fixed assets, and intercompany accounts, and resolve reconciling items on a timely basis.
Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately.
Maintain the fixed asset sub-ledger, including additions, disposals, and depreciation schedules.
Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules, with variance analysis against budget, forecast, and prior periods.
Support cash management activities, including bank reconciliations, cash flow reporting, and working capital monitoring.
Provide backup and oversight for AP, AR, and payroll accounting functions as required.

Financial Reporting & Compliance

Prepare financial statements and note disclosures in accordance with ASPE (or IFRS, as applicable).
Act as a primary point of contact for the annual audit or review engagement: prepare working paper files, respond to auditor queries, and implement recommendations.
Prepare and file indirect tax returns, including HST/GST and provincial filings, and reconcile related accounts.
Support corporate tax compliance by preparing schedules and working papers for external tax advisors.
Maintain and document internal controls over financial reporting; identify control gaps and recommend practical remediation.
Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, CRA, and statutory reporting requirements.
Assist with the preparation of internal management reporting packages for leadership and ownership.

Process Improvement & Collaboration

Identify and implement improvements to close procedures, reconciliation templates, and reporting workflows.
Document accounting policies and desktop procedures to support consistency and knowledge transfer.
Partner with Operations, Sales, and Supply Chain to understand business drivers behind the numbers.
Provide guidance, review, and informal mentorship to junior accounting staff.
Participate in ERP enhancements, system implementations, and ad hoc finance projects.

Qualifications

Required

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline.
Four or more years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience, including ownership of month-end close.
Solid working knowledge of ASPE and/or IFRS and of Canadian indirect tax (HST/GST) requirements.
Demonstrated experience preparing audit working papers and supporting external audit or review engagements.
Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, large data sets) and experience with a mid-tier or enterprise ERP system.
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to explain financial results clearly to non-financial colleagues.
Proven ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

Preferred

CPA designation, or CPA candidate in the final stages of completion.
Experience in a multi-entity, including intercompany and consolidation work.
Experience in manufacturing, distribution, or a similar inventory-based industry, with standard costing.
Public accounting experience (Big Four or mid-size firm) prior to moving into industry.
Hands-on experience with NetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage Intacct, or a comparable ERP.
Familiarity with reporting and automation tools such as Power BI, Power Query, or Vena.
