Position Title: Transitional Support Worker
Casual
Shift Work Required (Days, Evenings, Overnights, Weekends, Holidays)Position Description:

This is an on-call, relief position providing coverage for planned vacations, leaves of absence, training, and unexpected staffing needs. Successful candidates must have flexibility to accept shifts on short notice and be available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and statutory holidays.

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Northern Alberta (Efry) advances the dignity, worth, and potential of women, girls, and gender-diverse people who are criminalized and those considered at risk. Efry recognizes and is deeply concerned about the overrepresentation of Indigenous women in the criminal legal system and the ongoing impacts of colonization, systemic discrimination, and poverty. Alongside the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies, we advocate for meaningful systems change that addresses the criminalization, victimization, and marginalization of Indigenous women across Canada.

We are seeking compassionate, reliable, and grounded individuals to join our team as Transitional Support Workers. This role provides direct frontline support to guests while contributing to a safe, respectful, and trauma-informed environment.

Position Overview

The Transitional Support Worker provides direct support to guests, promotes a safe and welcoming environment, responds to crisis situations, and assists with the daily operations of the shelter/housing establishment.

This casual position does not guarantee a minimum number of hours. Casual Support Workers are an important part of our team and provide coverage to ensure continuity of service during planned and unplanned staff absences. The successful candidate must be comfortable working a variety of shifts and adapting to changing operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Guest Support & Advocacy

Build trusting, respectful relationships with guests through a trauma-informed and non-judgmental approach.
Support women in identifying goals related to housing, wellness, recovery, and community connection.
Conduct guest intake, orientation, and ongoing support.
Provide practical and emotional support while maintaining professional boundaries.

Safety & Crisis Response

Maintain a safe, secure, and supportive environment for guests and staff.
Respond to crisis situations using de-escalation, conflict resolution, and trauma-informed intervention.
Complete incident documentation and follow reporting protocols.
Liaise with emergency responders and community partners as required.

Program Operations

Support day-to-day shelter operations including routines, guest meetings, meal coordination, wellness checks, laundry, and household operations.
Maintain accurate, timely, and professional documentation.
Assist in maintaining cleanliness, organization, and shared living expectations.
Support transportation and community-based appointments as needed.

Community Connections

Connect guests with community resources including housing, healthcare, income supports, legal services, cultural supports, and other community programs.
Encourage guest independence while reducing barriers to long-term housing stability.

Team Collaboration

Work collaboratively with shelter staff, outreach teams, case managers, volunteers, and community partners.
Participate in required training, staff meetings, and professional development.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Values and practice alignment with the mission of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Northern Alberta.
Experience working in shelter services, outreach, housing, or other human services is preferred.
Post-secondary education in social work, psychology, human services, or a related field is considered an asset.
Strong understanding of homelessness, trauma, substance use, mental health, and gender-based violence.
Demonstrated familiarity with harm reduction principles and Housing First approaches.
Knowledge of and demonstrated respect for Indigenous Social History and culturally responsive practice.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and documentation skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Availability & Scheduling

Casual employees are expected to maintain a high degree of flexibility and availability to support a 24-hour operation. Successful applicants should be available to work:

Day, evening, overnight, weekend, and statutory holiday shifts.
Shifts offered with both advance notice and short notice.
Coverage for vacations, leaves of absence, training, and unexpected staffing shortages.

Requirements

Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
Access to a reliable personal vehicle for work-related travel.
Minimum $2 million liability insurance.
Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
Valid Food Handling Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
Flexible availability for rotating shifts, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and statutory holidays.
Ability to respond to call-in opportunities and short-notice scheduling when available.
