Position Overview
OCTS is seeking an experienced and dependable Transload Lead Hand to support our operations in Acheson.
This is a hands-on working leadership position responsible for helping coordinate the safe, efficient, and productive completion of daily transload activities. The Lead Hand will actively participate in loading, unloading, staging, inventory movement, forklift operation, and material handling while providing day-to-day guidance and support to Terminal Operators and Labourers.
Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the successful candidate will lead by example, reinforce safe work practices, help organize daily priorities, support employee training, and ensure customer freight is handled safely, accurately, and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Operations and coordination
- Actively participate in daily transload activities, including loading, unloading, staging, inventory movement, and material handling
- Safely operate forklifts and other material-handling equipment
- Help coordinate daily work assignments and operational priorities
- Monitor workflow and support productivity throughout the shift
- Ensure customer freight is loaded, unloaded, staged, and moved safely and without damage
- Support warehouse organization, inventory accuracy, and efficient operational flow
- Communicate customer requirements and daily priorities clearly to the team
- Identify and help resolve operational issues as they arise
- Assist with inventory counts, operational documentation, and reporting
Leadership and team support
- Provide day-to-day guidance and work direction to Terminal Operators and Labourers
- Lead by example through safe, productive, and professional work practices
- Support the onboarding, training, and development of new employees
- Reinforce operational expectations, work standards, and safe work procedures
- Communicate staffing, equipment, performance, and operational concerns to leadership
- Help create a respectful, accountable, and team-oriented working environment
- Support the development of employees who may be ready to take on additional responsibilities
Safety and equipment
- Promote and reinforce OCTS safety policies, procedures, and expectations
- Conduct or participate in toolbox meetings and safety discussions
- Ensure required equipment inspections are completed and deficiencies are reported
- Monitor work activities and address unsafe practices or conditions
- Promptly report hazards, incidents, near misses, and equipment concerns
- Support the proper care and operation of forklifts, equipment, and terminal assets
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe working areas
Continuous improvement
- Maintain effective communication with Operators, Labourers, Coordinators, Drivers, and operational leadership
- Support the implementation of standard operating procedures
- Identify opportunities to improve safety, productivity, organization, and customer service
- Assist with operational improvements and other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience
- Three to five years of experience in transload, warehousing, logistics, transportation, industrial operations, or a related environment
- Previous experience operating forklifts and material-handling equipment in a fast-paced workplace
- Experience providing work direction, training, mentoring, or informal leadership to employees
- Strong understanding of safe material-handling practices and warehouse operations
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to organize work, respond to changing priorities, and keep the team focused
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, accountability, teamwork, and operational excellence
Requirements
- Reliable transportation is required, as public transportation to the worksite may be limited.
- Valid driver’s licence with a acceptable driving abstract
- Forklift certification and operating experience
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to safely lift, move, and handle materials throughout the shift
- Willingness to perform physical, hands-on operational work
- Availability to support operational requirements, including occasional overtime and shift adjustments
