Reports To: Machining Supervisor
Location: 24 Napoleon Road, Barrie
Job Purpose: Design tools for press brakes, stamping and fixtures. Create illustrations, images, exploded views and animations for fixtures and tooling. Illustrations must convey assembly steps or concepts using images with minimal or no text. Create detailed drawings of CAD models and assemblies suitable for fixture and tool production indicating critical dimensions, tolerances, and detailed specifications. Use machinery as a backup to Tool Makers to build components for tooling, jigs and fixtures to meet production requirements. Work in close collaboration with R&D Designer, Manufacturing Engineer, Production Supervisors and Tool Makers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design press brake tools and fixtures for weldments, assembly fixtures, press brake tooling and paint masking using R&D 3D models and/or from conceptual drawings.
- Create detail drawings of CAD models and assemblies. Indicate inspection criteria, critical dimensions, tolerances and detailed part specifications.
- Provide CAD data for manufacturing. Ensure latest math data (2D and 3D) is maintained in company fixture database
- Create CAD models and concept models of single components and simple assemblies for use by manufacturing or by external vendors. Design for cost, aesthetic appearance, robustness, reliability and quality; considering project targets and project deadlines and whilst working in collaboration with other departments, other sites and outside vendors.
- Assist during machining process. Must participate in product launches and update drawings based on feedback from production.
- Use recognized design tools, including design reviews, functional analysis (and where applicable, input to simulation), tolerance stack ups for fit, form and function etc.
- Collaborate with designer and tool makers to provide input for the creation of a suitable test program to validate that the design meets safety and technical requirements.
- Create bill of materials, including all necessary details required to populate ERP system and to order parts and materials
- Support changes to existing models, drawings, based on Continuous Improvements, Change Notices and/or Corrections.
- Participate in regular design/process meetings, across Wolf Steel divisions, with a purpose of identifying opportunities for improvement in accuracy, efficiency and productivity. Develop best practices and SOP's for all aspects of design, including but not limited to 2D and 3D templates, modelling practices and naming nomenclature.
- Participate in PDM / data management meetings to create and optimize PDM processes, ERP interaction, cross departmental processes, check-in and release process etc. Provide recommendations to management with respect of opportunities for improvement.
- Some local and international travel maybe required.
Education & Experience:
- Minimum High School Diploma. Engineering technologist diploma or CAD technologist diploma would be considered an asset
- Must have a minimum of two (2) years of relevant drawing experience, specifically using 3D CAD software (Solidworks, SolidEdge, ProE, Catia, Mechanical Desktop, etc.) to create drawings for use in a manufacturing environment. Experience creating illustrations for technical manuals or literature would be considered an asset
- Must have knowledge and some practical experience of material and manufacturing processes. Some "hands on" mechanical or fabrication experience would be an asset
- Must have experience with tool and die machinery such as Vertical Mills, Radial drills, lathes, surface grinders. Welding experience and CNC experience an asset
- CSWA (Certified SolidWorks Associate), or willingness to achieve this requirement during 75 day onboarding process. CSWPA – drawing tools (Certified SolidWorks Professional) would be considered an asset in this position
- Experience using SolidWorks (or demonstrated experience with equivalent 3D software and willingness to learn Solidworks) and MS office is required
