The NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) Community Coordinator will champion the NORC Model of integrated health and social care in buildings that have a high density of aging adults by working to build and maintain relationships of trust, empathy, and mutual support with aging adults, and support and grow a thriving resident-led community.
Reporting to the Director, Community Wellness Services, the NORC Community Coordinator will be responsible for supporting aging adults to continue living safely with dignity and independence by creating socially connected communities. Working alongside resident leaders includes planning, developing, organizing, and coordinating in-building programming, responding to aging adults’ needs, liaising with NORC service partners, and facilitating inclusive community building activities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Plans, organizes, and coordinates activities at the NORC site to support the growth of an aging-in-place community, including resident-led initiatives and participatory decision-making;
- Works to strengthen relationships among residents and foster a culture of mutual support through dialogue, events, and community-building activities;
- In collaboration with the Director, gathers ongoing resident feedback to support continuous improvement of programs and services;
- Supports the identification of residents’ health, social, and wellness needs;
- Ensures learning and navigation resources are available to assist aging adults with health information and community supports;
- Collaborates with community partners to support the NORC Integrated Health and Social Care Model;
- Acts as the primary contact for building management on matters related to NORC residents and escalates issues or concerns to the Director as appropriate;
- Provides training and support to resident ambassadors and volunteer groups on community capacity-building and long-term sustainability initiatives;
- Maintains ongoing documentation and reporting related to resident interactions and program outcomes, ensuring confidentiality in accordance with CCD policies;
- Performs all duties in compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations and follows all organizational health and safety policies and procedures, including the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
Qualifications required:
- Post secondary education in social services, gerontology, or a related field required
- A minimum of two (2) years of related experience working with aging adults is required
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage respectfully and effectively with older adults, residents, community partners, volunteers, and interdisciplinary teams in a collaborative and supportive manner
- Experience in community programming, seniors’ services, or supportive housing environments
- Experience in service coordination, referrals, or community navigation
- Proficient computer literacy skills (MS Office, AlayaCare, etc.) required with a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies
- Strong problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work in dynamic environments
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness required
- Valid Ontario Driver’s “G” License and access to a safe and reliable vehicle
- Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certification
- Sensitivity to the needs of the vulnerable population with disabilities, including challenges in cognition
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Check completed within the past 6 months. (Please note: 4–6 weeks processing time)
- Must work in a safe manner and promote the health and safety of all staff, volunteers, clients and the community as outlined within CCD policies
Compensation: Hourly base rate of $25.52; with an additional 5% in lieu of benefits, and 6% vacation pay
Work Location: NORC sites within the Durham Region
*Subject to change, CCD staff may be required to work anywhere throughout the Durham Region
Hours of Work: Working hours are between 8:30am – 4:30pm. Part-Time (up to 20 hours per week)
