Early Literacy Tutor (Summer Position)
Location: Tyrone / Bowmanville, Ontario (In-Person)
Schedule: Monday to Friday
Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Potential for Additional Hours: There may be an opportunity to extend the schedule to approximately 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. for the right candidate.
Position Duration: July and August 2026
Potential for Ongoing Employment: If the arrangement is successful, there may be an opportunity to continue tutoring after school during the school year and/or on Saturdays.
About the Position
We are seeking an experienced Early Literacy Tutor to work one-on-one with a child entering Grade 2 at our home in Tyrone (Bowmanville).
The student has completed Grade 1 and requires intensive reading instruction to develop a strong literacy foundation before the new school year. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching early reading and be able to deliver engaging, structured, one-on-one instruction that builds both confidence and reading skills.
Our goal is to help the student become a confident, independent reader through daily instruction focusing on phonics, decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, and writing.
All tutoring will take place in person at our home.
Responsibilities
- Deliver structured one-on-one literacy instruction.
- Develop engaging daily lesson plans appropriate for an emerging reader.
- Teach phonics, decoding, sight words, reading fluency, spelling and comprehension.
- Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to parents.
- Build confidence while making learning enjoyable.
Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
- Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT)
- Retired Teacher
- Reading Specialist
- Special Education Teacher
- Early Childhood Educator (ECE)
- Educational Assistant (EA)
- Speech-Language Pathologist or Communicative Disorders background
- Education or Child Development student with significant literacy experience
Experience working with children who are behind in reading or who require structured literacy intervention will be considered a strong asset.
Requirements
- Experience teaching early literacy and reading development.
- Patient, encouraging, and positive teaching style.
- Reliable, organized, and punctual.
- Valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle preferred.
- Vulnerable Sector Check (or willingness to obtain one).
Compensation
Competitive hourly rate based on qualifications and experience.
