This is a golden opportunity for a young person who wants to gain a trade and work locally without camp work away from home. Vulcan Compression will sponsor the right candidate to pursue a complete apprenticeship. Knowledge of machining is not a pre-requisite, but a technical-aptitude a decent math skills are a must.

Vulcan Compression Ltd. is located within the heart of the beautiful Peace Region, amidst the largest and most productive natural gas shale play in Canada. Our staff specialize in refurbishing the components that pump this precious resource across the continent.

We are industry professionals with over 25 years of experience who take pride in servicing the oil and gas industry and surrounding community. Based out of Grande Prairie with a head office in Dawson Creek, BC, we are strategically situated, enabling us to respond around the clock to our customers’ needs.

Our team is focused on building long lasting relationships with our customers by providing only the best service. Our shop is capable of multiple shifts to get equipment back online and can provide exchange components to minimize downtime and lost production.

Our staff is comprised of experienced Machinists, Mechanics, Technicians, Apprentices, Parts People, Quality & Safety Specialists, Customer Service, Field Support and much more.

MACHINIST APPRENTICE - Grande Prairie

We are seeking a young, mechanically-inclined person to enter into a company-sponsored machinist apprentice programme with Vulcan.

Working under the tutelage of two experienced machinists, the successful candidate will enter a company-sponsored programme, gaining shop experience and attending 6-week long study programmes at an authorized school and writing multiple-stage exams on their way to successful completion of the 5-year programme.

Vulcan machinists are responsible for repairing and rebuilding compressor and pump components using specialized equipment and machinery to shape materials or craft entirely new parts. An apprentice will become experienced in the use of manual mills, lathes, boring mill, grinders, and eventually automated CNC equipment and much more.

Based on the degree of operational damage/wear, machinists are responsible in refurbishing components to meet or exceed OEM standards for re-use by customers. Becoming adept in the use of precision measurement instruments, eventually apprentices will use gained experience, skills, and judgement to determine the degree of repairs and component replacements required for every project. They will review drawings, instructions, or samples to ensure accurate production. Concerned with quality, safety, and efficiency, they will have a deliberate and systematic approach in carrying out each task to maximize value and minimize waste.

Responsibilities

Plan and organize assignments by studying work orders, drawings, components, and specifications to determine setup requirements to systematically achieve correct dimensions and tolerances of the finished workpiece.
Set up and operate a variety of machine shop equipment including manual lathes, milling machines, boring mills, cylindrical and surface grinders and more.
Draft and organize drawings of sample work pieces to a standard that enables repeatability.
Complete the necessary paperwork to facilitate the required business functions.
Keep equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform basic preventative maintenance functions on equipment.
Understand and adhere to all organizational health and safety policies and procedures and ensure the safety of self and others.

Is a cooperative individual who is receptive to others’ perspectives and has a positive attitude.

Qualifications

Education: High school graduate, with strong math skills, willingness and aptitude to complete studies for a Red Seal Certified Machinist certification.
Work Experience: 2+ Years preferred.
Skills: Excellent coordination and mechanical skills. Strong attention to detail. Written and verbal communication skills. Proficient in math. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive tasks. Ability to work under tight deadlines.
Knowledge: Rotating Equipment. Reciprocating Compressor components and pump fundamentals an asset but not a requirement.

Job Type

Full-time, Permanent

Schedule:

8-hour shift x 5 days per week
Day shift (8AM – 4:30PM)
Monday to Friday
Requires additional overtime as necessary
