Full job description

Position Title: First Responder

Location: Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area

Reports To: Program Coordinator

Employment Type: Temporary contract

Posting Date: 13-July-2026

Closing Date: 25-July-2026, 17:00 EDT

Start Date: Aug 2026

End Date: Nov-2026, with the possibility for extension

Schedule: Pick-up shifts up to full-time hours.

Pay scale: $18.75-$26.00

Qualifications

1. Pre-Service Firefighter Diploma

2. NFPA 1001 Firefighter level 1 & 2

3. Valid Emergency Medical Responder certificate from Canadian Red Cross.

4. Current BLS level CPR (formerly HCP)

5. Technical rescue training including confined space, high angle, auto extrication, hazardous materials awareness all an asset.

6. Ability to exert heavy physical effort required access and extricate injured people, sometimes over rugged terrain.

7. Ability to effectively communicate with team members, allied agencies, and make justifiable decisions in an emergency.

8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team under stressful situations and exercise sound judgement in an emergency environment.

9. Ability to identify patient treatment and extrication needs through adequate assessment and provide appropriate care in accordance with applicable care standards

10. Demonstrate competency when using basic computer software such as reporting systems, inventory, email, and word processing.

11. Excellent use of verbal and written English.

12. Satisfactory health, attendance, and former employment history.

13. Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record check free of crimes of moral turpitude.

14. Must possess fully functional smartphone with active data plan.

15. May require the use of a personal or company vehicle while company business. Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely for long periods of time, must hold and maintain a driver's licence that authorizes the person to drive rescue apparatus, have an acceptable driving record, and personal insurance coverage. Prior commercial driving experience an asset.

Duties

1. Provide emergency medical care to ill/injured people while ensuring the safe, timely, and appropriate disentanglement and extrication of ill/injured persons.

2. Perform emergency medical care in accordance with the patient care standards and procedures set out by RR, legislation, and regulations.

3. Respond to emergencies in all weather conditions, in a safe and secure manner.

4. Maintain contact and comply with direction from supervisors and/or Incident Command at all times regarding vehicle movements, status of equipment, call assignments and the extrication of patients.

5. Complete, in a timely manner, all required patient and administrative documentation specified in the applicable legislation, standards, company and client policies and practices. Ensure safekeeping of records.

6. Liaise with 911 call centres, families, client staff, police, fire and other health professionals/agencies to ensure relevant patient information is collected.

7. Inspect all equipment at the start and throughout the shift to ensure they are in proper working order, and in a clean and sanitary condition. Carry out housekeeping duties within the workplace including vehicles, ensuring the areas are maintained in a clean, sanitary condition.

8. Participate in mandatory training programs, continuing education programs, quality assurance programs and company training programs, as required.

9. Perform other related duties as may be required.
