POSITION TITLE: Peer Support Worker
DEPARTMENT: Community Services
SUPERVISOR: Clinical Lead/Team Supervisor
TERMS: Full Time, 3 year term

Purpose of Position:
The Peer Support Worker uses lived and living experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges to provide relational, strengths-based, and Harm Reduction-oriented support to individuals in crisis. This role models hope, resilience, and recovery while walking alongside community members, respecting each person’s self-identified goals, including safer use, stabilization, or abstinence.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct Peer Support. (60%)
- Provide immediate emotional support and reassurance to individuals experiencing crisis, distress, or life challenges.
- Utilize lived and living experience to build trust, establish rapport, and foster meaningful relationships with clients.
- Model hope, resilience, recovery, and self-determination through peer-based support practices.
- Provide strengths-based, non-judgmental, and person-centered support that respects individual goals and choices.
- Support individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, grief and loss, trauma, housing instability, and other social challenges.
- Encourage client engagement in services, treatment plans, cultural supports, and community-based programs.
- Support both harm reduction and abstinence-based approaches, recognizing that recovery pathways are unique to each individual.
- Assist clients in identifying strengths, developing coping strategies, and building personal support networks.
- Provide practical assistance and emotional support during crisis response and follow-up activities.
- Promote client empowerment, self-advocacy, and informed decision-making.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
- Navigation and Outreach. (25%)
- Assist individuals in navigating health, mental health, substance use, housing, income assistance, cultural, and community-based services.
- Support safety planning, wellness planning, and follow-up outreach activities.
- Facilitate connections to Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Cultural Support Workers, TteS services, and community programming.
- Assist clients in accessing appointments, referrals, treatment programs, and support services.
- Conduct outreach to individuals who may be disconnected from services or experiencing barriers to care.
- Support community reintegration and ongoing engagement with identified supports following a crisis.
- Provide information regarding available resources, services, and community programs.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with community members, service providers, and partner organizations.
- Team Participation and Documentation. (15%)
- Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, care planning meetings, and team debriefings.
- Share observations, client concerns, and recommendations with team members while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation, records, and activity reports.
- Contribute to program evaluation, data collection, and quality improvement initiatives as required.
- Participate in team meetings, supervision, training opportunities, and cultural learning activities.
- Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with TteS policies, standards, procedures, and cultural protocols.
Financial Responsibility:
No direct budget responsibility.
Supervision or Training Duties:
May provide orientation, mentoring, peer support and knowledge transfer as assigned.
Special Requirements:
Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector required.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
Ability to work flexible hours, participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergencies.
Working Conditions:
Office, community, client homes, hospitals and partner facilities. Exposure to emotionally demanding, unpredictable and potentially high-risk situations.
Professional Certification, Education and Experience:
- Personal lived and/or living experience relevant to peer support practice and the ability to draw upon that experience to support others in their wellness and recovery journeys.
- Completion of Grade 12 and a minimum of two (2) years of experience providing peer support, outreach, community support, harm reduction, or related human services; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Completion of recognized Peer Support Training or willingness to complete within six (6) months of employment.
- Crisis Intervention Training or willingness to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
- Experience supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use concerns, trauma, grief and loss, homelessness, or other complex social challenges.
- Knowledge of recovery-oriented, strengths-based, and harm reduction approaches.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to establish trust and maintain professional boundaries.
- Understanding of confidentiality, ethics, and professional conduct.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong conflict resolution, de-escalation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate documentation and records.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement.
- Knowledge of recovery-oriented and harm reduction approaches.

HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.
PAY GRADE: Starting at $30.86/hour depending on education and experience
