FENCING TECHNICIAN — FLY-IN WORK, NORTHERN MANITOBA
Job type: Full-time, Two-year term with a one-year optional extension.
Pay: $40 - $70/ hour, overtime authorized in advance.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We hold the fencing services contract for a network of remote airports and marine sites across northern Manitoba, and we're hiring fencing technicians. We need at least three.
The work is straightforward chain link and gate work — new installs, repairs, barbed wire systems, motorized gate openers, and demolition or modification of existing fence. What makes this job different is where it happens. Every site is an isolated community with no all-weather road access. You fly in on small aircraft, work a stretch of long days, and fly out. It suits people who like the work, don't mind being away, and can be trusted to do a job properly without a supervisor standing over them.
If you've done fence work and want something better paid and more interesting than another season of residential jobs in town, this is worth a look.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- New installs and repairs of fencing, gates and posts
- Install and repair gates, including motorized openers
- Install and repair fence-mounted barbed wire systems
- Demolition and modification of existing fencing
- Write up estimates to upgrade a site's fence system
- Submit reports, as-built drawings and photographs on completed work
- Keep a detailed log of the problem found, how you fixed it, and digital photos
- Report progress to the site coordinator every day you're on site
- Protect existing roads, grounds and structures, clean up fully at the end of a job, and account for leftover material
- Work alongside other contractors, utility crews and operations staff on shared sites
WHERE YOU'LL WORK
Beren's River, Bloodvein, Brochet, Cross Lake, Gods Lake Narrows, Gods River, Headingly, Ilford, Islandview, Island Lake, Lac Brochet, Little Grand Rapids, Matheson Island, Norway House, Oxford House, Pikwitonei, Poplar River, Pukatawagan, Red Sucker Lake, Sea Falls, Selkirk, St Theresa Point, Shamattawa, South Indian Lake, Split Lake, Thompson, Tadoule Lake, Thicket Portage and York Landing.
All are isolated communities with no all-weather road access. Most are reached by small aircraft carrying 4 to 19 passengers. South Indian Lake is reachable by cable ferry year-round and York Landing by motorized ferry. Pukatawagan, Ilford, Pikwitonei and Thicket Portage have rail access.
TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION
Flights and accommodation are arranged and paid for by us — you don't book or fund your own travel. Meal allowance is paid when you're working on site, except where your accommodation already includes meals. Some sites have no commercial accommodation; in those cases you stay in the airport facility and may share with other crew. Drinking water is provided on site. You must be prepared to work outdoors in extreme weather.
HOURS
Up to 12-hour days and up to 12 consecutive days on a rotation, with shorter or longer periods negotiable depending on the job. Daily hours are agreed with the site coordinator beforehand. Overtime must be authorized in advance and is assessed under the Manitoba Employment Standards Act. Non-urgent call-outs need you on site within five business days; urgent ones within three.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Hands-on fence installation and repair experience — chain link, gates and posts
- Current certification in Ladder Safety, Scaffolding and Fall Protection. If you don't hold all three we'll arrange training, but certification must be current within three months of starting.
- Able to fly in small aircraft, and comfortable doing so regularly
- Able to be away from home for stretches of up to 12 consecutive days, and to share accommodation where a site has none
- Physically fit and able to work outdoors in extreme weather
- Willing to follow the Workplace Safety and Health Act and use the PPE provided at all times on site
- Able to keep clear written logs, take useful job photos and hand in accurate paperwork
- Valid driver's licence
NICE TO HAVE
Motorized gate openers and access control hardware. Fence-mounted barbed wire systems. As-built drawings and written estimates. Concrete and post-setting. Airport or secure-site work. Two-way radios. Ties to any of the communities listed above.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
All tools and equipment, including two-way radios. All personal protective and safety equipment. Safety training and certification where you don't already hold it. Flights, accommodation and meal allowance for every site trip. Steady work under a two-year contract with a one-year optional extension.
