Full job description

Help us build the Finance team we need for what comes next.

Nextleaf is building a new Finance team, and we’re looking for a Senior Accountant who gets excited about more than keeping the books accurate.

Yes, the fundamentals matter. Month-end needs to close. Reconciliations need to reconcile. Reporting needs to be accurate, useful and on time.

But this role goes further.

You’ll be stepping into a Finance function that is evolving, which means you’ll have a real opportunity to help shape how the team works going forward. If you’re the person who notices the extra five steps in a process, asks why are we still doing it this way?, and then figures out how to make the workflow run significantly smoother, you’ll probably like it here.

Reporting directly to our CFO, you’ll be a senior, hands-on member of the Finance team and a key set of eyes and ears across the function. You’ll own important pieces of our accounting and financial reporting, review work across the team, spot issues before they become bigger issues, and make sure the CFO has reliable financial information to make decisions.

This is not currently a people-management role, but you will provide oversight, guidance and support to other members of the Finance team. As the team evolves, there may be an opportunity for this position to grow into formal people leadership.

What you'll own

Your core focus will be the accuracy, integrity and usefulness of our financial information.

You'll:

Own key components of month-end, quarter-end and year-end close.
Prepare financial statements, management reporting, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals and supporting schedules.
Analyze the income statement and balance sheet, investigate unusual activity and explain what is driving variances.
Prepare budget-to-actual and period-over-period analysis that gives our CFO more than just numbers on a page.
Review accounting work completed by other members of the Finance team and help maintain a high standard of accuracy.
Oversee AP, AR, payment runs and accounting documentation while staying hands-on when needed.
Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow reporting and financial analysis.
Coordinate audit preparation and work directly with our external auditors alongside the CFO.
Take on payroll administration once you're trained on our processes and systems.

Where you'll make an impact

We're not looking for someone who sees a recurring accounting problem and simply adds another manual workaround.

We want someone who wants to understand why it keeps happening.

You'll work closely with Finance, Operations, Supply Chain, Inventory and Purchasing to improve the way financial information moves through the business.

That includes:

Strengthening accounting controls and close processes.
Fine-tuning reconciliations and reporting.
Identifying opportunities to automate or simplify workflows.
Troubleshooting ERP and transactional issues.
Improving documentation, procedures and close checklists.
Catching financial, reporting and process risks early.
Helping build a Finance function that is scalable, disciplined and easier to operate.

You'll have room to question processes that don't make sense, recommend better ones and help put those improvements into practice.

We're a manufacturing business, so understanding how operational activity eventually lands in the financials matters here.

You'll work with inventory accounting, COGS, inventory valuation, production transactions, manufacturing costs and variances. You'll also help investigate discrepancies between operational records, Microsoft Dynamics 365 and the general ledger.

Hands-on Microsoft Dynamics 365 experience in a manufacturing environment is a strong asset.

We'd particularly value someone who understands how transactions move through purchasing, receiving, inventory, manufacturing, costing, AP, AR and ultimately into the GL, and who knows how to investigate when something in that flow doesn't look right.

What you'll bring

We're looking for someone with:

5+ years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience.
Strong experience with month-end close, general ledger accounting, reconciliations and financial reporting.
Manufacturing accounting experience, including inventory, COGS and production-related transactions.
Experience preparing financial statements, management reporting and variance analysis.
Strong Excel skills.
Experience supporting annual audits and working with external auditors.
The ability to work independently, prioritize competing deadlines and take ownership of your work.
Strong analytical instincts. You don't just find discrepancies; you want to know what caused them.

A degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related discipline is preferred.

A CPA designation or active progression toward your CPA is also preferred.

Experience reviewing the work of other accounting team members is an asset.

And while Dynamics 365 manufacturing experience would be ideal, we're ultimately looking for someone who understands the accounting behind the system, can learn quickly and isn't afraid to dig into a problem.

How we work

This role is based at Nextleaf's headquarters in Coquitlam, BC and is primarily in office.

We believe being together will be particularly important while this new Finance team gets established. Once you've completed training and onboarding and are fully comfortable in the role, there may be flexibility to work remotely up to one day per week with CFO approval.

There will occasionally be periods where some flexibility is needed around month-end, year-end, audits, reporting deadlines or payroll. That's accounting. But perpetual fire drills aren't the goal. Part of what we want this person to help us build is a Finance function with strong enough processes that everything doesn't have to feel urgent.

Compensation

$80,000–$90,000 annually

The successful candidate's starting salary within the range will reflect their experience, skills and alignment with the requirements of the role.
