The Opportunity
Lascelles is seeking an Intermediate Structural Engineer to join our structural team. The successful candidate will contribute to a diverse range of new and existing building projects, from initial investigation and design through construction.
Projects may include new buildings, additions and renovations, structural repairs and rehabilitation, foundation and retaining-wall projects, and assessments of existing structures. Work may range from small residential projects to larger commercial, industrial, institutional and agricultural facilities. The successful candidate will be expected to progressively take ownership of projects and client assignments, with technical guidance and review from senior engineering staff as appropriate.
This is primarily an in-office position based in either Ottawa or Hawkesbury. Limited hybrid work may be available, subject to operational requirements. The position involves periodic travel to project sites throughout Eastern Ontario and may require occasional work outdoors and in active construction environments.
The successful candidate will report to the Senior Structural Engineer/Project Manager.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural analysis and design of new and existing structures.
- Prepare and review structural calculations, drawings, specifications, reports and technical correspondence.
- Conduct field inspections, site reviews and investigations, and structural condition assessments, including field measurements, photographs and observations.
- Prepare technical reports documenting structural observations, analysis, deficiencies, recommendations and proposed repairs.
- Develop practical repair, rehabilitation, strengthening and retrofit recommendations for existing structures.
- Perform foundation and structural connection design.
- Provide construction administration services, including site reviews, responses to RFIs, shop-drawing review and coordination with contractors.
- Prepare proposals, fee estimates and scopes of work, with opportunities to participate in business development and client relationship management.
- Coordinate and communicate with architects, contractors, geotechnical engineers, building officials and other consultants.
- Mentor and supervise junior engineers, engineering interns, technicians and draftspersons.
- Attend project and site meetings as required.
- Work independently while recognizing when senior-level review or input is required.
- For candidates licensed as a P.Eng. in Ontario, assume responsibility for and sign and seal engineering documents within their area of competence, as authorized by the firm and in accordance with professional and regulatory requirements.
Project Experience
Our work includes residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and agricultural buildings, including:
- New construction, additions, renovations and alterations;
- Existing-building investigations, structural assessments, rehabilitation and repair;
- Foundations, retaining walls and other civil/structural components; and
- Practical repair and retrofit solutions based on existing conditions and sound construction practices.
Experience with bridges, culverts or other transportation-related structures, including condition assessments, is an asset.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an accredited university.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, or eligible for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario.
- Approximately 5–10 years of relevant structural engineering experience. Consideration will be given to candidates with equivalent education, technical experience and demonstrated responsibility.
- Demonstrated understanding of structural behaviour, load paths, and gravity- and lateral-load-resisting systems.
- Experience with structural analysis, member design and connection design, and the ability to develop practical structural systems appropriate to the building type, materials and existing conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects from initial investigation and design through construction.
- Experience designing with wood, structural steel, reinforced concrete and masonry.
- Experience investigating existing structures, interpreting field conditions, determining the cause and significance of structural deficiencies, and developing repair or strengthening solutions is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Building Code, National Building Code of Canada and applicable CSA standards.
- Strong engineering judgment, an understanding of construction practices and sequencing, and the ability to develop practical, constructible engineering solutions based on actual field conditions.
- Strong technical writing, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small consulting engineering environment, with limited day-to-day supervision while appropriately identifying matters requiring senior technical review.
Registration with the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec is an asset. English is required; French is considered an asset.
Technical Skills
- Experience with RISA-3D and/or WoodWorks is preferred; experience with other structural analysis and design software will be considered.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with Revit or other BIM platforms is an asset.
- Competency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
- Ability to interpret architectural, structural, civil and mechanical/electrical drawings and coordinate structural requirements with other disciplines.
- Ability to develop, review and independently check engineering calculations using software and sound engineering principles.

Compensation
Lascelles offers a competitive salary of $90,000–$105,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
