About the Role
Zyutec Inc. is seeking an experienced Electrical Technical Lead / Technical Authority to provide senior-level engineering leadership across a diverse portfolio of electrical engineering projects.
This is not primarily a production engineering position. We are looking for an engineer with strong technical foundations who has developed the engineering judgment, practical experience, and professional maturity to make sound decisions on complex real-world projects.
The successful candidate will serve as a senior technical authority within the company, providing technical direction, reviewing engineering work, resolving difficult project issues, mentoring engineers and designers, and helping ensure that our engineering solutions are practical, defensible, code-compliant, constructible, and appropriate for the client's actual needs.
The role is particularly suited to an experienced engineer who has encountered a wide variety of projects and understands that strong engineering is not simply applying codes and standards—it requires judgment, risk assessment, practical problem solving, and the ability to make responsible decisions when information is incomplete or multiple solutions are possible.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior technical authority for electrical engineering projects.
- Provide technical leadership from project concept and investigation through design, construction, commissioning, and closeout.
- Review and approve engineering approaches, calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, studies, RFIs, shop drawings, and other technical deliverables.
- Resolve complex electrical engineering problems where standard details or straightforward code interpretation are insufficient.
- Evaluate existing conditions, project constraints, client requirements, constructability, cost, operational impacts, and engineering risk when developing solutions.
- Establish clear technical direction for engineers, designers, and production staff.
- Perform senior-level QA/QC and identify issues that materially affect safety, reliability, code compliance, constructability, cost, or professional liability.
- Support project managers and client-facing staff in resolving significant technical issues.
- Participate in important client meetings, site investigations, design reviews, and construction discussions when senior technical input is required.
- Mentor intermediate and junior engineers and help develop their engineering judgment rather than simply providing technical answers.
- Contribute to the development of engineering standards, design procedures, technical knowledge systems, QA/QC processes, and AI-assisted engineering workflows.
- Work effectively with AI-enabled engineering tools while maintaining independent professional judgment and accountability for engineering decisions.
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in electrical consulting engineering and a demonstrated ability to independently lead technically challenging projects.
More important than years of experience alone is evidence that the candidate has personally dealt with difficult engineering situations and can explain the reasoning behind their decisions.
Strong candidates should demonstrate:
- Excellent electrical engineering fundamentals.
- Strong engineering judgment and first-principles thinking.
- Ability to independently analyze unfamiliar or ambiguous technical problems.
- Ability to distinguish critical engineering risks from minor technical issues.
- Practical understanding of how engineering decisions affect owners, contractors, operators, and other consultants.
- Experience making and defending engineering recommendations where multiple technically acceptable solutions exist.
- Strong understanding of existing-building conditions and retrofit constraints.
- Ability to review the work of other engineers and identify issues beyond simple code or drafting errors.
- Professional confidence to make decisions while recognizing when additional investigation or specialist input is required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High level of ownership, reliability, and professional responsibility.
- Ability and willingness to learn and work within an increasingly AI-enabled engineering environment.
Technical Experience
Broad experience across several of the following areas is preferred:
- Low- and medium-voltage power distribution
- Electrical service and distribution upgrades
- Emergency and standby power systems
- Generators, UPS systems, and transfer systems
- Fire alarm and life-safety systems
- Lighting and lighting controls
- Building electrical systems
- Existing-building electrical assessments and investigations
- Institutional, commercial, industrial, and government facilities
- Electrical infrastructure renewal and retrofit projects
- Construction administration and field review
- Commissioning and system verification
- Coordination with mechanical, architectural, structural, civil, controls, and other disciplines
Experience from more than one perspective—such as consulting engineering, construction, commissioning, facility/owner operations, or design-build environments—is considered an asset.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, or eligible for registration in the applicable Canadian jurisdiction.
- Typically 15+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience; however, demonstrated engineering judgment and technical leadership are more important than a specific number of years.
- Significant experience independently delivering electrical engineering projects.
- Canadian consulting engineering experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with public-sector, institutional, federal/provincial, healthcare, infrastructure, or similar technically demanding projects is an asset.
- Familiarity with applicable Canadian electrical, building, fire/life-safety codes and engineering standards.
- Ability to obtain required security clearances for government projects where applicable.
What This Role Is Not
We are not simply looking for an engineer with a senior title or a long list of projects.
We are looking for someone who can be presented with an unfamiliar and difficult engineering problem, identify what truly matters, ask the right questions, evaluate the available options, understand the risks and practical consequences, and provide a clear and defensible engineering recommendation.
The successful candidate should be capable of becoming a trusted technical authority within the organization.
Our Engineering Environment
Zyutec is actively developing an AI-enabled engineering delivery model. AI and automation are increasingly used to assist with engineering research, document review, calculations, technical documentation, QA/QC, project information management, and production workflows.
We believe the increasing capability of AI makes experienced engineering judgment—not less important, but more important.
The Technical Lead will therefore focus increasingly on the areas where senior engineering expertise creates the greatest value: technical direction, engineering judgment, risk management, complex problem solving, professional accountability, and development of the next generation of engineers.
