Job Summary
The Programmer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and optimizing CNC and Waterjet programs used in the production of aerospace components. This role converts engineering drawings, CAD models, customer specifications, and manufacturing requirements into efficient, machine-ready programs for CNC milling, CNC turning, and waterjet cutting operations. The Programmer works closely with Engineering, Production, Quality, and Continuous Improvement teams to ensure components are produced safely, efficiently, and in accordance with customer and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Programming & Process Development
- Program 3-, 4-, and 5-Axis Vertical and Horizontal CNC Mills, CNC Lathes, and Waterjet cutting equipment using Mastercam 2019 or newer versions.
- Develop and maintain manufacturing programs for new and existing aerospace components.
- Program complex aerospace geometries to exact specifications in a cost-effective and manufacturable manner.
- Create CNC machining programs, waterjet cutting programs, setup sheets, tooling requirements, and work instructions.
- Develop efficient nesting and cutting strategies for waterjet operations to maximize material utilization and productivity.
- Utilize Vericut simulation software to validate CNC programs, identify potential collisions, and optimize machining processes prior to production.
- Do shop support by maintaining DELCAM programs.
- Select appropriate tooling, feeds, speeds, cutting parameters, cutter compensation, and machining strategies based on material and process requirements.
- Support program implementation, machine setup, prove-out activities and first article inspections.
- Troubleshoot and modify existing programs to improve productivity, reduce cycle times, improve material yield, and eliminate manufacturing issues.
Technical Knowledge & Expertise
- Interpret aerospace engineering drawings, customer standards, specifications, and manufacturing requirements.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of GD&T, machining methodologies, machine kinematics, work holding, machine setup, and waterjet cutting principles.
- Understand the machining and cutting characteristics of aerospace materials including aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, Inconel, and composite materials.
- Distinguish between various tooling types, geometries, coatings, and sizes and determine the appropriate application for each manufacturing process.
- Support root cause investigations and corrective actions related to machining, waterjet cutting, and quality concerns.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve cycle times, reduce setup times, minimize scrap, increase material utilization, and improve machine efficiency.
- Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Standardize programming methodologies and best practices across CNC machining and waterjet operations.
- Participate in cost reduction and productivity improvement projects.
Qualifications & Experience
· Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Precision Machining, CNC Programming, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
· Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and directly related experience may be considered.
· Minimum 5 years of programming experience in a manufacturing environment.
· Minimum 3 years of experience programming CNC Mills, CNC Lathes, and/or Waterjet equipment.
· Experience programming 3-, 4-, and 5-Axis CNC machinery.
· Aerospace manufacturing experience is strongly preferred.
· Experience programming complex precision-machined components with tight tolerances.
· Advanced proficiency with Mastercam 2019 or newer versions.
· Experience using Vericut simulation software. V9.6+
· Experience with DELCAM Powermill software considered an asset.
· Strong understanding of GD&T, machine kinematics, work holding, machining methodologies, and material properties.
· Ability to interpret aerospace engineering drawings, customer specifications, and manufacturing standards.
· Experience supporting machine setup, prove-out activities, first article inspections, and production launches.
· Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and manufacturing documentation processes.
· Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement experience considered an asset
· Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or Red Seal Certification in Machining (Machinist, Tool & Die Maker, or General Machinist) is considered an asset.
Work Environment
- Monday to Friday, on-site (Afternoon Shift)
- 44 hours per week
- Combination of office and plant floor presence.
