The Alberta Human Rights Commission works with Albertans to promote awareness of, and appreciation for, human rights and diversity. Its overall goal is to develop inclusive communities in which all Albertans can participate in the social, economic, and cultural life of the province without discrimination.

The Alberta Human Rights Act establishes the Alberta Human Rights Commission to carry out functions under the Act. The Commission is an independent Commission created by the Government of Alberta. The Commission has a two-fold mandate: to foster equality and to reduce discrimination. It fulfills this mandate through public education and community initiatives, resolution and settlement of complaints of discrimination, and human rights tribunal hearings.

Role Responsibilities

Join the Alberta Human Rights Commission as an Information Agent and play a frontline role in advancing human rights, fostering equality, and helping Albertans understand their rights and responsibilities.

As the first point of contact for the Alberta Human Rights Commission, you will help Albertans understand their rights and responsibilities under the Alberta Human Rights Act. Through providing clear, impartial information, you will help prevent and resolve human rights concerns, assess whether issues fall within the Commission's jurisdiction, and connect individuals with appropriate resources and supports. By empowering people to make informed decisions and navigate complex situations, you will play an important role in advancing human rights and supporting the fair and effective administration of Alberta's human rights system.

Your key responsibilities include:

Providing accurate, impartial, and confidential information on human rights issues, rights, and obligations under the Alberta Human Rights Act.
Assessing inquiries and applying human rights principles to determine jurisdiction, explain options, and connect individuals with appropriate resources.
Communicating complex legal concepts and complaint processes in a clear, accessible, and client-focused manner.
Referring individuals to appropriate programs, services, organizations, or government resources when additional support is needed.
Supporting complaints management processes through preparing correspondence, coordinating information, and assisting with administrative activities.
Maintaining accurate records and documentation to support consistent, efficient service delivery and complaint processing.

Qualifications

Requirements:

High School Diploma
3 years related experience working in a client service, legal, regulatory, investigative or complaint resolution environment

Equivalency: Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

Experience working with diverse clients, including individuals experience barriers, conflict or distress.
Experience using electronic case management or records systems.
Knowledge of human rights legislation, administrative fairness, complaint processes or legislation interpretation.

Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

Notes

Please Note:

There are 3 temporary positions (up to 12 months) with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday.
These positions can be located in Edmonton or Calgary.
Final candidates will be required to undergo a criminal records check (CRC).

Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
