Flexcell Engineering Inc. is a multidisciplinary engineering firm involved in civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, and environmental projects across Ontario and beyond. Our work spans both the public and private sectors and includes land development, municipal infrastructure, drainage and culvert design, building and structural design, rehabilitation work, and design-build projects. We are a small, hands-on team. Our projects move quickly, and our engineers are expected to take ownership of their work, contribute across disciplines, and remain involved from design through construction. We are currently looking for a licensed Civil & Structural Engineer (P.Eng.) who can independently complete and manage both structural and general civil engineering assignments while working closely with our internal drafting team.
What you’ll need:
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (MANDATORY)
- Education meeting one of the following: a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering plus a Master’s degree focused in Civil and Structural Engineering; or a Bachelor’s of Engineering degree with formal education covering both civil and structural engineering disciplines
- Demonstrated professional experience completing both structural and general civil engineering design in Ontario
- Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code (OBC), including structural design requirements and the ability to apply the Code to building and structural engineering assignments
- Strong working knowledge of Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications (OPSS) and Ontario Provincial Standard Drawings (OPSD), with the ability to apply relevant standards and details to civil and municipal infrastructure projects
- Experience with structural analysis and design of common building and infrastructure materials and systems, including concrete, steel, wood, foundations, retaining structures, and related structural components
- General civil engineering experience including grading, drainage, servicing, culverts, road or access works, site development, erosion and sediment control, and municipal infrastructure
- Ability to prepare engineering calculations, design notes, specifications, reports, details, and markups suitable for development into complete drawing packages
- Ability to provide clear engineering direction and markups to an internal drafting team and efficiently review drawings through revision and issuance
- Valid G driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle for site visits (KM reimbursed)
- Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate directly with clients, contractors, municipalities, subconsultants, and internal staff
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities across multiple projects, and take professional ownership of assigned engineering work
What the role involves:
- Completing civil and structural engineering design, calculations, review, and coordination for a variety of public- and private-sector projects
- Structural engineering assignments involving building components, foundations, retaining structures, rehabilitation, condition-related work, and other structural systems within the engineer’s area of competence
- General civil engineering assignments involving grading, drainage, storm and sanitary servicing, culverts, road/access works, site development, ESC, and municipal infrastructure
- Applying OBC structural requirements and applicable codes, standards, design criteria, OPSS specifications, and OPSD details to project designs
- Preparing engineering sketches, design markups, calculations, specifications, reports, and technical direction for the internal drafting team
- Reviewing drawings prepared by the drafting team for technical accuracy, constructability, coordination, and completeness prior to issuance
- Taking ownership of project coordination and project management tasks, including scope, schedule, deliverables, client communication, and coordination with subconsultants and contractors
- Attending project sites from time to time for measurements, field verification, inspections, construction review, meetings, and project management activities
- Supporting construction and contract administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings or submittals where applicable, and addressing field conditions
- Working directly with other Flexcell disciplines to coordinate multidisciplinary designs and resolve project issues efficiently
Work environment:
- Full-time or part-time employment options are available, depending on the candidate and project workload
- The majority of design and office work may be completed remotely; however, the successful candidate must be available for site measurements, field reviews, client meetings, and project management activities as required
- For remote work, the candidate must have their own computer capable of reliably running the engineering, CAD/BIM, document review, and project software required for their assignments; Flexcell will provide required company logins and software access where applicable
- The role works closely with Flexcell’s internal drafting team. The engineer is expected to provide clear design direction and markups so drawing production can be completed efficiently and consistently
- This is a small-team environment where engineers are expected to contribute across multiple aspects of a project rather than working within a narrowly segmented role
- Occasional travel across Ontario may be required, including overnight stays where necessary for project work (company-covered accommodations)
What we’re looking for:
- A practical, well-rounded engineer who is comfortable moving between structural and civil assignments
- Strong engineering judgment, attention to detail, and accountability for professional work
- Ability to independently develop solutions rather than requiring detailed step-by-step direction
- Comfort with client-facing communication and project management responsibilities
- Ability to balance technical quality, constructability, schedule, and project budget
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, multi-project environment and coordinating with an internal drafting team
- A team-oriented approach and willingness to support work outside a single narrow specialty when appropriate
This role is not suited for someone who:
- Is looking for a strictly desk-based structural analysis or design role with no field responsibilities
- Only wants to work within either structural or civil engineering and is not comfortable supporting both disciplines
- Requires constant direction to progress engineering tasks
- Is not willing to attend site for measurements, inspections, field reviews, or project meetings
- Is not comfortable taking ownership of project coordination, client communication, and project-related responsibilities
- Prefers a highly segmented, large corporate environment where engineering, drafting, field review, and project management are handled by separate teams
Assets:
- Experience with municipal infrastructure, road rehabilitation, culvert, drainage, retaining wall, land development, or building rehabilitation projects
- Experience preparing or reviewing designs for municipal approvals and familiarity with Ontario municipal engineering standards and permitting processes
- Experience with contract administration, construction review, shop drawing review, RFIs, tender documents, and construction-phase engineering
- Experience coordinating CAD/BIM drawing production with technologists and drafters
- Experience managing projects directly, including client communication, scope, schedule, budget, and deliverables
- Broad cross-disciplinary experience and comfort coordinating with environmental, electrical, and mechanical engineering teams
Compensation:
Part-time: $45.00 – $55.00 per hour, depending on experience and demonstrated capability
Full-time: approximately $80,000 – $100,000 per year, depending on experience and demonstrated capability (equivalent to the stated hourly range based on a standard full-time work year)
KM reimbursement provided for required site travel
Location:
Candidates must be located in Ontario, Canada and able to travel to project sites as required. Remote work is available for the majority of design and office tasks where the candidate has a suitable home workstation; however, this is not a fully remote position because site measurements, inspections, field reviews, meetings, and project management activities will be required from time to time.
Pay: $80,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
