Position Summary
Shimco is seeking an experienced Senior CNC Machinist to set up, operate, troubleshoot, and continuously improve CNC machining processes for precision aerospace components. This is a senior, hands-on role: you will own the most demanding setups on the floor, act as the technical point of reference for the machining team, and help drive quality and productivity improvements across the shop.
Key Responsibilities
· Set up and operate CNC milling machines and machining centres.
· Read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, and GD&T.
· Perform complete machine setups including tooling, fixtures, offsets, and program loading.
· Inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measuring equipment.
· Make basic G-code/program and offset adjustments as required.
· Troubleshoot machining, tooling, fixture, and dimensional issues.
· Improve setup time, cycle time, tooling life, quality, and productivity.
· Support new job prove-outs and process improvements.
· Train and support junior CNC machinists/operators.
· Follow all quality, safety, and machine maintenance requirements.
· Act as the technical lead on the floor, serving as the escalation point for setup, tooling, and dimensional issues.
· Create, edit, and optimize CNC programs at the machine and in CAM to improve cycle time and tool life.
· Perform and document first-article inspections in line with AS9100 requirements.
· Lead root-cause investigations and corrective actions on non-conforming product.
· Recommend tooling, fixturing, and workholding solutions for new and existing programs.
· Provide setup-time and capacity input to planning and quoting as required.
Qualifications
· 4+ years of hands-on CNC machining experience, including senior or lead-hand responsibility.
· Strong CNC setup and machining skills.
· Good understanding of GD&T and engineering drawings.
· Experience with precision measuring equipment.
· Ability to troubleshoot machining problems independently.
· Knowledge of G-code, tooling, feeds, speeds, and workholding.
· Aerospace or precision manufacturing experience preferred.
· Experience with HAAS, Mazak, or similar CNC machines is an asset.
· Proven ability to hold close tolerances (±0.0005") on complex, low-volume precision work.
· Demonstrated experience mentoring, training, and setting direction for junior machinists.
· Working knowledge of AS9100/ISO 9001 quality systems, first-article inspection, and corrective action processes.
· Comfortable working from an ERP/MRP system and maintaining accurate production and inspection records.
Preferred Skills
CNC programming/CAM experience, multi-axis machining, fixture development, continuous improvement, and experience working in an AS9100/ISO 9001 environment are considered strong assets.
