Occupational Therapy Aide

UNION-AUPE (MW.26.028)

Employment Type: Permanent Part Time 0.71 FTE

Hours of Work: Mon, Wed and Fri 0800-1615, Tuesday 0845-1300

Reporting to the Site Manager, Occupational Therapist (OT), Physical Therapist (PT) and/or Recreation Therapist (RecT), the Therapy Aide assists with identifying the needs of rehabilitation involvement for residents/clients and delivers assigned therapeutic intervention as directed by the Therapist, Regulated Nurse, or Case Manager.

Educational and other Qualifications:

Grade 12 or equivalent
Post-secondary therapy aide course work
ALBERTA EMPLOYEES: Food Safety Basic or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Able to communicate in English both verbally and written so others can interpret and understand
Excellent communication skills to ensure a positive engaging experience for resident/client in a variety of recreation programs groups and one-on-ones
Recognizes and responds effectively to verbal and non-verbal cues and adjusts communication style to suit recipient
Ability to document as per GSS charting guidelines
Demonstrates integrity as respect in difficult situations
Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to deal effectively with conflict in a diplomatic and professional manner
Comfortable using a computer including email, internet and MS Office
Excellent active listening skills
Demonstrated flexibility by changing routine to accommodate resident/client needs
Ability to effectively manage large group recreation programs independently
Ability to engage resident/clients in positive intervention as per resident/clients goals and needs

Work Experience:

Experience in a complex care or assisted living setting providing therapeutic services to geriatric and/or disabled populations
Consideration may be given to experience supporting other populations

Duties:

Delivers assigned therapeutic interventions as directed by the Therapist, Regulated Nurse, or Case Manager
Works within the scope of practice of a Therapy Aide and defers to the Therapist and/or Site Manager as required
Assists residents/clients in provision, installation, and maintenance of their equipment as required
Performs safety checks as required
Communicates any pertinent information, progress or changes in residents/clients to the Therapist, Regulated Nurse or Case Manager in a timely manner
Reads the progress notes prior to seeing residents/clients but does not see residents/clients who are ill or who have had a significant change in functional ability
Motivates self, residents/clients and others to participate in therapy programs and attends to resident/client needs as required
Cleans equipment between each resident/client use
Proactively communicates with team members to resolve issues and communicate changes
Promotes teamwork by helping others through sharing of knowledge and experience to enhance resident/client care
Identifies and reports safety hazards and risk management issues and participates in finding solutions through constructive problem solving
Follows emergency procedures according to GSS policies and procedures
Documents in a concise and accurate manner that meets organizational and legal requirements
Understands and implements the service plan and individual treatment goals established for each resident/client
Follows program protocols and treatment plans as developed by the Therapist, Regulated Nurse, or Case Manager
Effectively uses body mechanics and resident/client transfer techniques and uses wheelchair safety, ambulatory aides and adaptive equipment relevant to the therapy program
Exhibits strong leadership skills and strives diligently to resolve conflict situations with families, staff, and volunteers in a positive, cooperative manner and uses sound judgment and decisiveness when addressing problems
Demonstrates dependability by reporting to work on time and as scheduled
Maintains a high standard of cleanliness, keeping the work environment consistently tidy
Adheres to all infection control practices and procedures
Other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

A current and clear Criminal Records Check Form and if applicable a Vulnerable Sector Check that has been obtained no more than 90 calendar days prior to the hire date.
A tuberculosis screening that has been completed no more than 12 months prior to the hire date.
