Established in 1984 to manage the settlement outlined in the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA), Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) represents the collective interests of Inuvialuit. Inuvialuit beneficiaries directly control IRC and its subsidiaries through a democratic process of elected directors from each of the six community corporations with chairs at the IRC Board, a process originally outlined in the IFA.
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Health & Wellness Programs Division delivers community wellness services that promote stability, recovery, and long-term well-being. The Transitional Housing Addictions Recovery Program (THARP) provides 24/7 safe and supportive residential environments for individuals in transition. Programs integrate Inuvialuit cultural values, trauma-informed care, and holistic approaches to support clients in achieving personal wellness goals.
JOB OVERVIEW
The Men's Wellness & Recovery Support Worker contributes to the daily wellness, engagement, and stability of residents living at IRC’s THARP facility.
Due to the gender‑specific, culturally grounded, and therapeutic nature of this Indigenous men’s recovery program, including participation in men’s teachings and ceremonies, the need for privacy in non‑co‑ed living spaces, and occasional solo supervision of male residents, this position is restricted to applicants who identify as male. This requirement is recognized as a bona fide occupational requirement (BFOR) under applicable human rights legislation to preserve the cultural, safety, and program integrity of gender‑specific services.
Working closely with the Coordinator, Inuvik THARP, the Support Worker provides emotional support, assists with resident activities, and helps maintain a structured, safe, and healing environment. This role emphasizes compassionate care, positive communication, and modeling of healthy routines aligned with Inuvialuit values and trauma-informed practice.
Note: This position is not equivalent to a safety role in construction, trades, or industrial environments. Rather, it is a residential-based position focused on maintaining safety, security, and support within a therapeutic housing setting. Relevant experience may include work in shelters, group homes, reception, public or community-based environments where interpersonal awareness, a calm presence, and respectful engagement are essential.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Resident Care and Support

Provide direct day-to-day support to residents, ensuring their emotional and physical needs are met.
- Assist residents with daily living activities such as meals, laundry, cleaning, and personal routines.
- Foster positive relationships and trust with residents through empathy, consistency, and clear boundaries.
- Support residents in understanding and following facility guidelines and curfews.
- Encourage participation in cultural, recreational, and skill-building programs.
- Monitor and report changes in resident behavior or well-being to the Coordinator or Manager.
2. Program and Activity Support

Assist in organizing and facilitating structured activities, workshops, and cultural programming.
- Promote engagement in community wellness, cultural teachings, and traditional practices.
- Support group sessions, family visits, and life-skills programs under the direction of the Coordinator, Inuvik THARP Program.
- Ensure residents have access to resources that promote healing and independence.
3. Facility Operations

Maintain cleanliness and order within resident spaces and communal areas.
- Support meal preparation, food service, and supply inventory.
- Conduct safety checks and report maintenance or operational issues immediately.
- Ensure facility policies and safety standards are always followed.
4. Communication and Documentation

Record daily observations, resident updates, and shift activities in logs and reports.
- Participate in shift handovers and staff debriefings.
- Collaborate with team members to maintain consistent, respectful, and effective communication.
5. Policy Compliance and Professional Conduct

Follow IRC HR Policies, including overtime, standby & callback pay.
- Maintain confidentiality in compliance with IRC’s Privacy and Confidentiality Policy.
- Remain fit for duty and free from substances while on shift or standby.
- Demonstrate professionalism, cultural awareness, and compassion in all resident interactions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be/have:

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience in a support, shelter, or wellness program environment preferred.
- Certifications in First Aid/CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and WHMIS (or willingness to obtain).
- Experience working with Indigenous or northern communities is an asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Understanding of trauma-informed, and harm-reduction principles.
- Strong interpersonal, observational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during high-stress situations.
- Sound judgment, dependability, and personal integrity.
- Excellent written and verbal communication for documentation and reporting.
- Ability to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays in a 24/7 operation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Hours: Rotational shifts (day, evening, and overnight) providing continuous coverage.
- Work Environment: Residential setting; may involve exposure to crisis situations or emotional distress.
- Physical Demands: Requires mobility for rounds, ability to respond quickly to emergencies, and light physical work, physically able to lift and transport program supplies and equipment (up to 30 lbs) in support of daily operations and activities.
- Standby & Callback: Employees may be assigned standby duty as per the IRC's HR policy.
- Overtime: Compensated or banked per IRC's HR policy.
